The sun had not yet fully risen, but Omega's mission was already close to completion. The operation in the city was proceeding without any major problems, and the silence on the radio indicated that the support team led by Clint was monitoring everything accurately. John and Natasha were just a few meters away from each other, maintaining their cover until the last moment. They had successfully completed the task of intercepting the arms dealers, and now, the extraction phase was about to begin.
After ensuring that the perimeter was secure, John signaled to Natasha that it was time to retreat. They met at the evacuation point, where the adrenaline of the moment was still pumping strongly. The tension between them, which had exploded the night before, remained latent. However, now, with the mission over, they knew that they needed to deal with what had happened.
As they waited for the transport that would take them out of there, John looked at Natasha. Even after an intense operation, she was impeccable, her professionalism always at the forefront. But he knew there was more beneath that facade.
"We need to talk, Natasha," John said calmly, breaking the silence.
She looked at him, her gaze steady, but there was a glint in her eyes that John hadn't seen before. A hint of vulnerability, something rare in the spy.
"I know," she replied, crossing her arms. "About last night."
"Yes, about yesterday." John took a step closer, his tone firm but soft. "I can't pretend that nothing happened. Because for me, it was more than a moment. It was real. And I want to talk about it."
Natasha lowered her head for a moment, her thoughts racing. All her life, she had been trained to hide her feelings, to use love only as a weapon. The Red Room had taught her that love was a weakness, something for children, something an assassin like her couldn't afford to feel. But as she looked at John, she couldn't deny what she felt.
— It was real for me too, John, — she admitted, finally looking up at him. — But... I was taught not to get attached. Not to let myself feel anything like that.
John moved even closer, his heart heavy but determined. He placed a gentle hand on Natasha's shoulder, then moved it up to her face, caressing her cheek softly. Natasha instinctively tilted her face toward his touch. It was a simple gesture, but loaded with meaning.
— What you were taught was a lie, Natasha, — he said with loving firmness. — Love is not just for children. It is not a weakness. In fact, it is one of the strongest things we can have. I know what you have been through, and I am not asking you to forget your past. I just want us to have a chance.
Natasha closed her eyes for a moment, absorbing John's words. His touch was warm, a rarity in her world of ice and shadows. She was used to pain, loss, and manipulation, but this... this was different.
— John... I don't know if I can, — she said, her voice low. — I don't know if I know how to do this.
"No one knows at first," John smiled softly, still stroking her face. — But the important thing is that I'm here to try with you. I promise to be loving, understanding. I'm not asking for perfection. I just want a chance to build something real."
Natasha opened her eyes, the weight of the decision reflected in them. Part of her was still scared, but another part, the one that was tired of living in constant alert, of always fighting her own feelings, wanted to believe John.
"Do you really believe that?" she asked, the doubt evident in her voice.
John nodded slowly.
"I believe in us, yes. I believe that you are so much more than what they made you out to be. You are strong, independent, but you also deserve to feel something other than war and darkness." He slid his thumb gently across her cheek. "And I want to be the man who shows you that."
Natasha felt a wave of emotion pass through her. It was as if a wall she had built for so many years was starting to crack. John's words struck deep, because he didn't just see her as a weapon or a spy; he saw her as a woman with feelings, someone who deserved love and affection.
"You're right," Natasha murmured, her voice slightly hoarse. "Maybe what I was taught was wrong."
She moved closer to John, placing her hand over his, still on his face. For the first time, she allowed the idea of a relationship, something that had previously seemed impossible, to be a real possibility.
"I want to try, John," she said, her voice soft but full of determination. "I want to see if I can… if I can have something more. With you."
John smiled, feeling a wave of relief and happiness at hearing those words. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he also knew that Natasha's strength, combined with what they already felt, would make it possible for each other, would take them far.
"That's all I want, Natasha." He leaned in and kissed her gently, a kiss full of promise and an uncertain future, but full of possibilities.
When the kiss ended, they both remained silent for a few seconds, just enjoying each other's presence. Natasha still held John's hand on her face, and he gently pulled her into a hug, as if he wanted to make sure she knew she wasn't alone.
"I'll take care of you, Natasha, the way you deserve," John whispered, as his arms wrapped around her.
She closed her eyes, feeling safe in a way she had never experienced. For the first time in a long time, she let her barriers fall and allowed herself to feel. The life of a spy and a super soldier would always be dangerous and full of challenges, but in that moment, they both knew that, together, they could face anything.
"So, that's it," Natasha said with a slight smile as they pulled away. "We're really doing this."
— We are, — John replied, returning the smile. — And it's going to be amazing.
Natasha laughed softly, something she rarely did, and took John's hand, intertwining her fingers with his. There was a long road ahead, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like this path didn't have to be walked alone.
And with that, they left the hotel room, ready to face the next challenge. Together.
Merry Christmas
