Chapter 7 - Pain and her past

The room was fairly empty, with just a simple white bed and grey walls. There wasn't many things inside. 2 doors likely leading to the bathroom and closet. A bed against the far wall and a shelf of items.

His gaze doesn't linger for long as he moves to place Jade on the bed.

The young girl disguised as a boy subconsciously reaches her hand out in an attempt to prevent Alex from leaving. Noticing this Alex hesitantly moves his hand to rub the top of her head. His hand messing up her short hair. This only makes her look more attractive to Alex and he forces himself to look away.

Jade didn't want to be alone and he was looking for something to distract himself when his eyes land on one of the objects sitting on the shelf.

"A shell?" He mutters. He was curious why she had such a thing. Her family was obvious very wealthy. Even he had heard of the Winters family though he knew nothing of their children. Besides it was fairly obvious from the siblings clothing, just how rich they were.

Walking closer to the shelf Alex notices a small notebook below the shell.

Lifting the shell he pulls out the notebook and begins reading it silently, starting from the bookmarked page.

'Today grandpa took me to the beach for the first time. He was busy talking to people about a boat and I was finally allowed to be alone! It wasn't for very long but I found a pretty shell! I hope Mommy likes it.'

On the next page was another note in the same childlike handwriting.

'Grandpa said I was too sick to see Mommy. Grandpa is a liar. He just wants to keep me away from Mommy and Daddy. The mean doctor lady told me to stay in my bed so I can feel better. I think grandpa told her to say it so I wouldn't ask to see Mommy and Daddy anymore.'

The next one really caught his attention.

'I hate Grandpa. He told nanny to hit me. I was wrong. I should have taken my medicine. It's yucky and it makes me feel weird. I don't like it.'

Every page from that point on was full of descriptions of where Jade had been harmed and who had done it. Even the reason.

There was one particular page that made Alex want to kill someone.

'Apparently this is considered a diary. I heard it should start with the date and time but at this point I feel no need for it. It's been a week since I wrote. I'm almost 7 now. The beatings have gotten worse. Only now can I write about what happened. It started when I asked about Brother. Grandpa got really angry hearing his name. Grandpa is scary. He hit my head with a glass cup. It was bleeding a lot. After that he whipped my back again. I was so dizzy I could hardly think. I really thought I was going to die this time. I even passed out. Grandpa woke me up with a hot piece of metal. Now there's a heart on my side forever. Grandpa told me he only hurts me out of love. He said the heart will always remind me how much he loves me. Is this really love?'

Reading this Alex was uncharacteristically angry. He couldn't understand what he was feeling. This was someone he had only known for a few hours. They hadn't even had a real conversation. And this was a boy! He was starting to question everything. He had been so sure he liked girls. Although there was only one who ever managed to get close to him and that was when they were children. He had never felt attracted to any other guy. Just the thought made him uncomfortable. Not that he had anything against same sex relationships. He just didn't think he would ever want to be in one.

Looking back at Jade, her shirt had moved up pretty far from all her wiggling and Alex could indeed see part of the scar. It was fairly high on her body and Alex couldn't help but let his eyes wander over the exposed skin. He wanted to know what it was like to run his fingers over her small waist while embracing her from behind. He was sure her body would fit perfectly in his embrace.

Without even realizing it he had moved closer to jade. He was mere inches away from her tempting lips. If he leaned in just a bit more he their lips would connect.

At that moment a knock on the door stopped him from acting on his desires. He was glad as he knew he would regret it if he really did that.

Alex hurriedly lays a blanket over Jade and makes his way towards the door. He was womder who it could be so late at night. He didn't even think about how the other party would react to seeing him in Jades room.

Seeing the person standing outside both Alex and the guest froze.

"What are you doing in Jade's room?" Nova asks angrily. He wasn't really familiar with Leo's brother as Alex was almost always busy with something when he was at the Wolfe household.

"He fell asleep and I didn't want to make him wake up so I just carried him to bed. We all need the rest especially Jade after all the fighting today. It's already late so I think I'll get to bed myself. We have a long day tomorrow." Alex says naturally. His face showed no hint of lies and mooNova didn't suspect anything. He was sure Alex didn't know Jade was a girl so he wasn't really that worried. Plus this was his best friends younger brother.

Knowing his sister was already asleep Nova kept his footsteps light and silently made his way to the bed. He slipped his shirt off and climbs into bed beside her. He was worried but he didn't know why. He didn't think he could sleep without holding her in his arms.

At least for the night.
