Chapter 36 - Bound by Blood

"Damon," I called as I saw him lounging on the bench near the town square. I was on a mission, thoughts racing in my head. The journal, the curse—or prophecy, whatever you'd call it. But most of all, what had happened between us the other night was seared into my mind like an unsolved mystery.

He didn't bother to look up right away, his expression lazy, but a glimmer of interest flickered in his eyes as I approached. I could almost sense the smirk waiting to emerge.

"Back so soon?" he drawled, finally turning to face me, his gaze intense.

I planted my hands on my hips, doing my best to hold his gaze, to show I wasn't going to back down. "I need answers, Damon. About… whatever this curse is. Or prophecy. Whatever you call it."

He chuckled, the sound low and almost amused, as if he'd expected me to show up sooner or later with questions I couldn't hold back anymore. "A curse, a prophecy," he said, shrugging. "Whatever you want to call it. Just know that you and I, sweetheart, are bonded." He leaned in, closing the space between us, a smirk dancing on his lips. His hand came up, almost too gently, as he ruffled my hair, messing it up just enough to make me glare at him.

"Really?" I huffed, swatting his hand away, trying to ignore the warmth creeping up my cheeks. "You can't just… 'bonded'? And that's supposed to explain everything?" I shot him a look, trying to steady my voice. "Because I remember, Damon."

At that, he arched an eyebrow, folding his arms as he looked at me with that maddening, unreadable expression. "Oh? And what exactly do you remember?" His voice had a hint of a challenge in it, and I could tell he was enjoying this.

I swallowed, feeling a blush creeping in but determined not to back down. "Well… not everything exactly. But I remember the feeling… what you told me about… what you are."

He took a deliberate step closer, his gaze unrelenting. "Then what am I, hm?" He tilted his head, eyes gleaming with something sharp and playful. "Go on. Say it. Don't go quiet on me now, Blue Bell."

The nickname caught me off guard, like everything else about him, and I nearly forgot my point in the first place. His gaze, his whole presence, had a way of pulling me in, but I forced myself to stay focused. "Fine. You're a vampire," I said, my voice firmer than I felt. "But that still doesn't tell me why we're 'bonded' or what this curse means."

"Smart girl," he murmured, seeming both impressed and amused. "But as for the curse? The prophecy? There are things better left… mysterious."

I huffed, crossing my arms. "You know, for someone who supposedly has all the answers, you sure like to dodge them."

He chuckled again, clearly entertained by my frustration. "Maybe I just like watching you squirm," he replied smoothly. Then, just as I was about to retort, he straightened up, his expression shifting to something more serious. "Tell you what—how about I give you some answers, and you take a little trip with me? A road trip. Consider it a 'bonding' experience."

I hesitated, my mind racing. A road trip with Damon sounded like a terrible idea, and yet… I wanted to know more, wanted to get closer to the truth.

"Fine," I said after a beat, trying to sound confident. "But only if you actually give me some real answers."

He grinned, seeming genuinely pleased with my decision. "Deal. Grab what you need; I'll pick you up in an hour."

As I turned to leave, I could feel his eyes still on me, that smile lingering in my mind long after I'd started walking away.

An hour later, I was packed and waiting by the curb when Damon's car pulled up, sleek and dark, almost predatory. He honked once, then leaned over to open the passenger door, not bothering to get out.

"Let's hit the road, Blue Bell," he said, flashing that smirk again as I slid into the seat.

"Where exactly are we going?" I asked, settling in, though my nerves buzzed with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

He shrugged, putting the car into gear. "Wherever the road takes us. Think of it as a little adventure."

I glanced over at him, trying to read his expression. "You're still not going to tell me everything, are you?"

He chuckled, eyes flicking to me briefly before looking back at the road. "Patience, Amara. You'll get your answers… eventually."
