Chapter 17 - Dinner, Distractions, and Unwanted Guests

"Elena, are you sure about this?" I asked, folding my arms as I leaned against the kitchen counter.

Elena was organizing everything for tonight's dinner, humming as she set out plates and polished silverware. Her face was bright with a kind of quiet excitement, but I could tell there was a hint of worry behind it.

"Yeah, totally!" she replied, a little too cheerfully. "I mean, Stefan's… great. I just thought it'd be nice to get everyone together, so he can meet you guys more, you know? In a... relaxed setting."

I raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Relaxed, huh? With Caroline, Bonnie, and Anna here?"

Elena laughed, giving me a gentle shove. "Okay, maybe not relaxed, but fun. And Caroline's been dying to meet Stefan properly, so it seemed like a win-win."

The doorbell rang just as she finished, and I glanced at her, grinning. "Showtime."

I opened the door to see Caroline, looking excited and carrying a cake box. "I brought dessert!" she declared, brushing past me and making a beeline for the dining room. "What do you think Stefan's favorite flavor is?"

"Hmm," I replied, feigning deep thought, "probably 'whatever he's handed.'"

Bonnie arrived next, flashing me a quick smile as she took in the scene, her gaze flitting from Elena to the table and back. "Looks like you two went all out."

Elena's face flushed. "Oh, you know, I just wanted everything to look nice."

"Sure," Bonnie teased, smirking at me as if we were all in on the joke. "Just nice."

As Caroline helped Elena in the kitchen, Bonnie and I shared a knowing look. Bonnie leaned close, whispering, "So, what do you think of Stefan? I mean, he's… mysterious, right?"

I shrugged, my gaze drifting toward the door as if he might appear at any moment. "He's definitely... different. Quiet, but he's kind."

Bonnie nodded, watching me thoughtfully. "I think he seems genuine. But if he makes Elena happy, I guess that's what counts."

A few minutes later, the doorbell chimed again, and Elena's face lit up. "That must be Stefan!"

I watched as she practically bounced over to the door, trying not to look too eager as she opened it to reveal Stefan, standing there with his usual calm demeanor, holding a bouquet of flowers.

"Hey," he greeted, smiling softly as he handed the flowers to her.

"Oh, Stefan," she said, blushing as she took them. "They're beautiful."

I shot Bonnie a quick look, and she mouthed, "Smooth."

As they made their way into the kitchen, I grabbed my phone to check for any messages from Jeremy or Anna. Just as I was about to put it down, a familiar voice behind me made my stomach drop.

"Well, isn't this a cozy gathering?" Damon drawled, sauntering in with his usual smirk.

I shot Elena a surprised look. "Elena, did you invite him?"

Elena shook her head, eyes wide as she looked from Stefan to Damon. "No, I... I thought it was just supposed to be us."

Damon's smirk grew as he pulled up a chair, making himself comfortable. "Oh, don't be so modest, Jenna invited me. Thought I'd join the family dinner and get to know my brother's friends."

Stefan's jaw tightened slightly, but he forced a polite smile. "Damon."

Damon's eyes gleamed with mischief as he looked around the table. "Oh, don't look so thrilled. I'm just here for the food. And the company, of course."

Caroline, who was blissfully unaware of Damon's reputation, leaned forward, flashing him her brightest smile. "Well, any brother of Stefan's is a friend of ours."

Stefan shot Damon a look, as if willing him to behave, but Damon simply chuckled. "See? That's the spirit."

Anna and Jeremy finally arrived, adding to the slight chaos that was building. Anna gave Damon a wary look, recognizing him from somewhere, but she said nothing, choosing instead to keep close to Jeremy.

Elena tried to reclaim control of the evening, clearing her throat as she gestured for everyone to take their seats. "Okay, everyone. Dinner is ready, so... dig in!"

As we started eating, I noticed Damon watching me from across the table, a subtle smirk playing on his lips. I ignored him, determined to focus on the positive vibes of the night, and struck up a conversation with Stefan.

"So, Stefan," I began, "how's high school treating you so far?"

He shrugged, a slight smile softening his expression. "It's nice to have a fresh start, I think. I haven't really been anywhere for long before this."

"Is that why you tried out for the football team?" Bonnie asked, with a smirk. "Making friends with the guys?"

He laughed, nodding. "Something like that. It seemed like a good way to settle in."

Damon interrupted, leaning forward with a glint in his eye. "And to impress the girls, I'm sure." His gaze drifted to me, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.

"Damon," Stefan said sharply, his voice holding a warning.

Damon held up his hands, feigning innocence. "What? I'm just pointing out the obvious."

Ignoring him, I turned to Elena, who was clearly trying to keep the conversation on safe ground. "So, Elena," I said, "are you planning on going to the game on Friday?"

Elena's face lit up. "Absolutely! I wouldn't miss it."

Caroline chimed in. "I'm already planning to decorate the bleachers! It's going to be spirit central."

"Sounds like we're all in," Bonnie said with a grin.

Damon leaned back, eyeing us all with a dark amusement. "Sounds like fun, a little pep rally for the home team."

As the conversation continued, I could feel Damon's presence looming like a shadow over the dinner. There was something unsettling about him, the way he looked at people, how his smile never quite reached his eyes. I tried to avoid his gaze, but every so often, I'd glance up to find him watching me, that unreadable smirk on his lips.

Eventually, we finished eating, and everyone drifted into smaller groups, chatting and laughing. Damon leaned against the wall, watching Stefan with a smug expression. Finally, as the evening wound down, I caught Elena's eye and tilted my head toward the door, signaling that we should probably wrap things up.

As if reading our minds, Stefan stepped forward. "Thank you, Elena, Amara, Jenna... this was really nice."

Elena blushed, smiling up at him. "Thanks for coming. I'm glad everyone got a chance to meet."

Damon smirked, his gaze cutting to me. "Oh, believe me, the pleasure was all mine."

Before I could respond, Caroline bounced over, grinning. "Well, we should definitely do this again. Right, Damon?"

"Oh, definitely," Damon replied smoothly, his eyes glinting as he looked back at me. "Wouldn't miss it for the world."

As he turned to leave, he shot me one last look, something dark and knowing flashing in his eyes, leaving me with a strange feeling, as if he'd seen something in me that I hadn't quite seen myself.

Once the brothers had gone, Bonnie let out a breath, shaking her head. "Okay, is it just me, or is Damon seriously... intense?"

"You're telling me," I replied, rubbing my arms as if to shake off a chill. "There's something about him that just feels... off."

Jeremy nodded, looking at Anna. "I didn't like how he kept looking at you, either. Like he was... analyzing you."

Elena wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Look, we'll keep an eye on him. But let's not let him ruin the night, okay?"
