Chapter 7 - Another sigh

Chapter Seven

Emma's POV

I walked into Xing publishing house and all eyes were literally on me. I wasn't famous and I don't associate with people that often. So that's why I couldn't understand why they were looking at me, or was I involved in a scandal that I don't know about.

I got to my desk.

" Congratulations Emma!" Sarah said with a big smile. Her desk was opposite mine so we were more like partners.

" What happened? I noticed a whole lot of people looking at me at the reception."

" Your fame has spread round the office." She said excited, her thirty two teeth all out on display.

" Sarah, get straight to the point." I whined getting impatient. I really wanted to know what all these was about, if it was good or bad.

" Check on your desk." I walked to my desk and looked at it, there was a brown envelope on it. My suprised gaze moved from the brown envelope to Sarah's smiling face.

" Open it." She urged me. I tore the seal of the envelope. My hand flew to my mouth and my eyes widened at what was in front of me. It was a manuscript to Xander Flynn's upcoming book. I was shocked and short of words, I didn't know what to say or how to react.

" The first Junior editor to be in charge of Xander Flynn's book." We both screamed jumping up and hugging ourselves.

Someone walked in making us to stop.

" Miss Emma Wellington, the director sends for you"

" Ok, I'll be right there." I arranged my clothes and patted my head before walking out. The director's office was on the last floor so I had to get on the elevator.

The secretary snarled at me before opening the door for me.

" Good morning Sir" I greeted immediately I entered into his office.

" Emma Wellington, the newest star, please have a seat." I plopped down on one of the seats opposite him.

" I'm pretty sure the news has spread like a wild fire. Was it delivered to your desk?"

" Yes it was, sir"

" We need it ready in the next two weeks and by the third week it should be already in the market."

" Yes sir I'll get it ready by then."

" Ok, keep up the good works and we might be talking about senior editor in the next three months."

I couldn't believe it, I was about to get a promotion. I held myself down resisting the urge to jump ' Calm down Em' I chanted in my head.

" Thank you sir"

" That would be all for now." I stood up and walked out.

I came back to my table to see a pile of short articles for me to review. It was twice the usual number of articles I used to work on. I forgot that fame comes with jealousy.

I looked at Sarah and she sent me a pitiful look. I sat down and decided to get to work immediately. I started by review the short articles.

" Aren't you going Emma?" Sarah asked on her way out.

" To where?"

" Have you forgotten? Today is Friday."

Today was employees welfare day. Every Friday the employees of Xing publishing house are allowed to go off early and are giving a stipend to treat themselves well. Most employees use that time to go out together and have fun.

" No, not today. I have work to do."

" You can always do it on Monday."

" And crush this writers expectations, no. Hard pass"

" Ok, have fun. I'm out."

Finally at five o'clock pm I was done with the articles. I picked up the Xander Flynn manuscripts. I would work on it over the weekend.

I had to head to the library. It was becoming a routine after work I go to the library to read or work before going back home. I greeted the security men, showing them my student identity card before entering in.

I saw Kayla and a few of my colleagues as I entered. I waved at them before climbing the stairs to my usual spot. Immediately I sat down some kind of peace enveloped me. I took out the book that professor Ellis has given me.

The Art of War and Love by Ellis Windsor.

I started working on it, I was actually close to finishing. I looked outside the window to take in the beautiful evening sunset.

" Beautiful isn't it?" I heard behind me. I turned around to see who it was. My gaze landed on a dark skinned guy. His face looked familiar, like I had seen him before.

" Hello" he said waving his hand in my face to grab my attention.

" Hi" I responded, it sounded like a whisper.

" Writer's block?" I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I chuckled when I realised what he meant.

" No, I'm not a writer. I'm an editor"

" An editor! That's interesting. You get to read books before it even gets published"

" Yep"

" That sounds like fun" I rolled my eyes remembering what I went through today.

" Yea sometimes"

" I'm Alex, what's your name?"

" My name is Emma." I said turning back to what I was doing.

" So what are you studying or are you the new hot female lecturer every student had been talking my ears off about" he rolled his eyes making air quotes. His facial expression looked funny which made me giggle a bit.

" No, I'm not. I'm just a masters student studying Literature."

" That's amazing, you must really a have a truckload of books at home."

" Well it's sort of complicated. So how about you, what are you doing here?"

" This is my favourite place in school, it's quiet, calm, private and you can meet beautiful ladies. Just like I'm meeting you."

" Yea this place is really cool but I still prefer the love garden. What are you studying." He chuckled a bit.

" I am a lecturer in mathematics by day and a reader by night."

" A reader who is also good with the numbers, that's really hard to come by."

" Yea, I'm sure you've heard of the fast rising author."

" Fiona Morgan?"

" No, his name starts with a letter X"

" Xander Flynn?"

"Exactly, that's my favourite author." She widened her eves.

" He is also my favourite too"

" Are we two twins? We asked at the same

We both laughed heartily before it was time for me to go. We bidded each other each other goodnight
