Chapter 2 - THE PERFECT GENTLE MAN

CHAPTER 2

The Unraveling

I woke up with a start, my heart racing from the remnants of a dreadful dream that clung to me like a shadow. The details were hazy, but I could still feel the chill of fear creeping down my spine. I had been running, desperately trying to escape something I couldn't see, something that felt all too real. It was a stark contrast to the warm morning sun streaming through my window, illuminating the room with a comforting glow.

I rubbed my eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of the nightmare. My phone buzzed on the bedside table, and I reached for it, hoping it was Anderson. Instead, it was a message from my best friend, Jess.

Jess: Good morning, gorgeous! Ready for our brunch date?

I forced a smile, typing back quickly, Sure! Can't wait! I needed to talk to someone about the dream—and about the strange, haunting presence of Dr. Gideon.

After a quick shower and a light breakfast, I threw on my favorite sundress and headed out the door. The fresh air felt good against my skin, washing away the remnants of my anxiety. I made my way to the café where Jess and I always met, excited to share my thoughts and hear her insights.

As I approached the café, I spotted Jess sitting outside, her vibrant red hair catching the sunlight. She waved enthusiastically, her smile infectious.

"Hey, Tania! You look lovely! What's up?" she asked, hugging me tightly.

"Thanks! Just trying to shake off a weird dream," I admitted, sliding into the chair across from her.

Jess raised an eyebrow. "Weird how? You know I love a good dream story."

I hesitated, unsure if I should mention Dr. Gideon. The last thing I wanted was to sound like I was losing my grip on reality. Instead, I focused on the feeling of dread that lingered from the dream.

"It was one of those nightmares where I was being chased. I couldn't see what was after me, but I felt like I was running for my life. It was so vivid," I said, taking a sip of my coffee.

"Yikes! Maybe you need to cut back on those horror movies!" Jess joked, but her expression turned serious. "But seriously, dreams like that can mean something. Are you feeling overwhelmed or anxious about anything in your life?"

I shrugged, but the thought of Dr. Gideon lingered in my mind. How could I explain that? He was a dream—literally. Yet, he felt so real.

"Just work and… you know, the usual relationship stuff," I finally said, hoping to deflect.

"Ah, Anderson?" Jess leaned in, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "How's that going?"

"Good! Really good. He's sweet and caring, and we're planning to take a trip together soon," I replied, forcing enthusiasm into my voice. Yet, as I spoke, I couldn't shake the image of Dr. Gideon from my mind.

"Then what's the issue?" Jess asked. "You seem a bit off. Is it just the dream?"

I sighed, knowing I had to tell her about the doctor. "Well, it's also about someone I met… on the bus."

"Do tell!" Jess said, leaning forward, eager for the scoop.

I hesitated, unsure if I should mention how striking I found him or how the connection felt almost electric. But the moment I described Dr. Gideon—the way he looked at me, the way he seemed to understand me—I felt the knot in my stomach tighten.

"And then I ended up in the hospital, and he was my doctor," I continued, gauging Jess's reaction. "He looked just like the guy on the bus."

Jess's eyes widened. "No way! That's like something out of a romance novel! How did it feel?"

I bit my lip, recalling the intensity of his gaze. "It was overwhelming. I felt this strange connection, but I'm engaged to Anderson, and I shouldn't be thinking about another man. It's just so confusing!"

"Okay, let's break this down," Jess said, her tone shifting to that of a supportive friend. "You had a moment with a guy who's undeniably attractive, and now he's in your life in a really unexpected way. It's natural to feel conflicted, but you need to figure out what you truly want."

I nodded, feeling a mixture of relief and dread. "I know I should focus on Anderson, but part of me can't help but think about Dr. Gideon. He's everything I thought I wanted—intelligent, charming, and so… real."

Jess leaned back, a thoughtful expression on her face. "Maybe it's not just about the doctor being perfect. It could be about what he represents—a chance at something more, something that feels right, even if it's complicated."

Her words lingered in the air like a spell, making me reflect on my relationship with Anderson. Did I truly love him, or was I just going through the motions? My heart raced at the thought of having to confront those feelings.

Just then, my phone buzzed again. It was Anderson.

Anderson: Hey babe! Can't wait to see you later. Just got off a call with my boss, and I'll be home soon!

I felt a rush of warmth, but it was quickly overshadowed by the knot of anxiety forming in my stomach. I was about to reply when Jess nudged me. "You'll figure it out, Tania. Just remember to be honest with yourself and with Anderson. You deserve to be happy."

Her encouragement resonated deeply within me. As I stared at Anderson's message, I couldn't help but wonder if I was ready to face the truths lurking beneath my surface. What if I couldn't choose between the life I had and the fantasy that felt so real?

Suddenly, I felt my phone buzz again. This time, it was an unexpected call from the hospital.

"Hello, is this Tania?" the voice on the other end asked.

"Yes, it is. Who is this?" I replied, a sense of dread creeping in.

"We have Dr. Gideon on the line. He wants to speak with you."

My heart skipped a beat. "Uh, okay."

Moments later, I heard the familiar, warm voice that had both haunted and captivated my thoughts. "Hi, Tania. I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I just wanted to check in on you after your visit."

"It's fine," I said, feeling a mix of relief and confusion. "I'm doing okay. Just… having brunch with a friend."

"Good to hear. I actually have something for you," he said, and I could sense the smile in his voice. "Can you meet me at the hospital for a moment?"

"Uh, sure. I'll be there soon," I replied, glancing at Jess, whose eyes were wide with excitement.

After hanging up, I turned to her. "He wants to meet me at the hospital. He has something for me."

Jess's expression lit up. "You have to go! This could be something sweet, maybe an apology for being a little too intense yesterday?"

I nodded, feeling both eager and anxious. I quickly excused myself and made my way back to the hospital, my heart racing in anticipation.

When I arrived, the familiar scent of antiseptic filled the air, a stark reminder of my last visit. I found Dr. Gideon waiting for me outside his office, a smile on his face and a small velvet box in his hand.

"Hey, Tania," he greeted warmly, his eyes sparkling with something I couldn't quite place. "I wanted to give you this."

Curiosity piqued, I reached for the box. "What is it?"

"Just a little something to brighten your day," he said, his tone gentle yet serious.

I opened the box, and my breath caught in my throat. Inside lay a stunning ring—delicate, with a heart-shaped ruby surrounded by sparkling diamonds. It was beautiful and elegant, unlike anything I had ever seen.

"Oh my God, it's gorgeous!" I gasped, overwhelmed by the beauty of the ring.

"I thought it might be a nice way to replace the one you lost," he said softly. "I know how much it can mean to someone."

The warmth of his gesture wrapped around me like a soft blanket, but the weight of reality hit hard. "But, I can't accept this. I'm engaged to Anderson," I stammered, my heart racing.

Dr. Gideon's expression shifted, the warmth fading slightly. "I understand, but it's just a gesture. You deserve something beautiful, especially after everything you've been through."

As I stood there, the ring shimmering under the fluorescent lights, I felt a strange mix of gratitude and guilt. I wanted to enjoy this moment, but the thought of Anderson loomed over me like a dark cloud.

"I appreciate it, really. But I have to go," I said, closing the box gently. "I need to think about everything."

"Of course," he replied, his voice a little softer. "Take your time. Just remember, sometimes you have to embrace the unexpected."

I left the hospital with a heavy heart, the weight of the ring pressing against my palm like a symbol of my internal struggle. I had come to see Dr. Gideon as a friend, but this gesture complicated everything. I needed clarity, and soon, I would have to confront my feelings for both men.

The tension in my heart mirrored the chaos in my mind as I made my way back to the café to meet Jess again. What was I going to do? I needed to figure it out before everything unraveled completely.
