Chapter 15 - Shadows of the Past

Zhao's mind was reeling. Feng Wei, a trusted member of the sect, had betrayed them, aligning with Liang Shen in the hopes of gaining power through the Celestial Flame. Zhao's anger simmered, fueled by the knowledge that this betrayal ran deep, threatening not only his life but the lives of everyone in the sect. Yun Xia's orders to prepare weighed heavily on him, but he felt an even stronger obligation to understand his legacy before facing these new threats head-on.

Determined to confront the past, Zhao spent hours in the sect's archives, poring over ancient scrolls and hidden manuscripts in search of answers about his family's connection to the flame. As he delved into the records, he discovered the story of a legendary ancestor, Li Tian, who had once wielded the flame with unmatched power. But the writings were cryptic, hinting that this power had come at a high price.

Late into the night, Zhao stumbled upon a scroll written in his ancestor's hand, recounting an encounter with a powerful rogue sect that sought to steal the flame. The passage hinted that the flame was not merely a source of power but a key to something far greater. Zhao felt a chill as he realized his family's legacy was more complex and dangerous than he had ever imagined. This ancient rogue sect seemed to share a mission similar to Liang Shen's.

Meanwhile, Mei Lin had taken it upon herself to investigate Feng Wei's connections within the sect. Posing as an ally, she gathered valuable information, learning of other disciples who had been subtly influenced by Feng Wei's ambitious rhetoric. She realized that many were unaware of the extent of Feng Wei's allegiance with Liang Shen, believing instead that he sought only to improve the sect's standing.

She knew that exposing Feng Wei would be risky, as many disciples respected him. But Mei Lin's loyalty to Zhao and the sect outweighed her fear of reprisal. To Zhao's surprise, she approached him in the library, quietly slipping him a note with details on the disciples she suspected might be involved in Feng Wei's scheme.

Zhao read the note, his expression growing tense. "We need to act before they have a chance to strike from within," he murmured.

Mei Lin nodded. "But we can't do it alone. We'll need allies—disciples we can trust to stand by us when the time comes."

The following evening, Zhao and Mei Lin met in secret with a small group of trusted disciples, including Lin Yu, a loyal and sharp-witted fighter, and Jing Hao, a healer known for her wisdom and pragmatism. Together, they devised a plan to confront Feng Wei, hoping to gather enough evidence of his betrayal to present to the elders.

Just as they were finalizing their plan, a messenger arrived with a scroll marked by Yun Xia's seal. It contained a warning: Liang Shen's forces were on the move, and a group of rogue cultivators had been spotted near the sect's borders. The message urged immediate caution, suggesting that the attack they had feared was imminent.

Without hesitation, Zhao led the group toward the sect's outer defenses, determined to intercept any threat. The night air was thick with tension as they reached the sect's outer walls, where shadows flickered ominously. Zhao could feel the Celestial Flame stirring within him, as if sensing the danger ahead.

Suddenly, the rogue cultivators appeared, emerging from the shadows with grim determination. Zhao and his allies engaged them, the battle fierce and unforgiving. Each strike of Zhao's flame illuminated the battlefield, casting eerie shadows on the faces of his opponents. Mei Lin fought by his side, her movements precise and deadly, while Lin Yu and Jing Hao covered their flanks.

As the battle raged, Zhao confronted one of the rogue cultivators, who sneered at him. "You think you can protect the flame forever, boy? Its power belongs to the world, not to a single sect."

Zhao's anger flared, but he kept his focus, channeling his flame with greater control than ever. "The flame is my legacy," he replied, his voice steady. "And I will defend it with everything I have."

With a final surge, he defeated the rogue, who collapsed with a bitter smile. "You may win this fight, but the battle for the flame has only begun," the rogue rasped before his eyes glazed over.

As the last of the rogue cultivators fell, Zhao and his allies regrouped, exhausted but triumphant. However, the encounter left a lingering fear. The rogue's words echoed in Zhao's mind, reminding him that this fight was only the beginning. Liang Shen and Feng Wei were still out there, waiting for their chance to seize the flame.
