Chapter 26: When Feelings Get Complicated

The next day, Ayla spent extra time getting ready for her dinner with Caden. She told herself it was just a friendly dinner, but her reflection in the mirror hinted otherwise. She chose her outfit carefully, applying makeup with a little more attention than usual. Deep down, she knew she was trying to impress him.

When she arrived at the restaurant, Caden was already waiting for her. His eyes lit up as she approached, and for a moment, they both just stood there, grinning like fools.

"You look… incredible," he said, sounding a little breathless.

"Thanks." Ayla felt a blush creep up her cheeks, trying to hide her nerves. "You don't look so bad yourself."

They made their way to a table in the cozy corner of the restaurant. The atmosphere was warm, intimate, and perfect for getting lost in conversation. They talked about everything, from their childhood memories to future dreams. Ayla found herself laughing, her worries about Clara and her insecurities melting away as Caden shared funny stories from his past.

Just as she was starting to relax, the topic took an unexpected turn.

"So, have you ever been in love?" Caden asked, his tone casual, but his gaze serious.

The question caught Ayla off guard. She took a sip of water, buying herself time to think.

"Once, a long time ago. But it wasn't… real love, you know? More like a crush," she replied, trying to downplay it. "What about you?"

Caden hesitated, his fingers drumming on the table. "Maybe. I thought I was, once. But looking back, I don't think it was real love either. More like… convenience."

Ayla nodded, understanding the feeling. "Sometimes we confuse love with comfort," she said softly.

Their eyes met, and a heavy silence settled between them. Ayla's heart thudded in her chest, wondering if he felt the same tension she did. She wanted to ask him what he felt for her, whether their relationship was still a game or something more.

Just as she was about to say something, her phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at the screen and saw a text from her best friend, Mia, asking if she was okay. Ayla quickly replied, not wanting to seem rude, but Caden noticed her distraction.

"Everything alright?" he asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

"Yeah, just my friend checking in on me," she replied, setting her phone down. But the moment was gone, the tension between them broken.

They continued their meal, but there was an undercurrent of unspoken words hanging in the air. Ayla wanted to bring up what he'd said the other night, to ask if he'd meant it, but fear held her back. She didn't want to ruin what they had with complicated feelings and misunderstandings.

After dinner, they decided to take a walk around the city. The night was cool, with a gentle breeze that carried the faint scent of rain. They strolled in comfortable silence, occasionally brushing shoulders as they walked.

When they reached a quiet park, Caden stopped and turned to her, a strange look in his eyes.

"Ayla, I've been meaning to ask you something," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

She felt her heart race, a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. "What is it?"

He hesitated, his gaze flickering to the ground. "If… if I were to ask you to stop pretending, to be real with me—would you?"

Ayla's breath caught. She felt a surge of emotions, her mind racing through a million different scenarios. But before she could respond, a familiar voice interrupted them.

"Oh! Ayla, is that you?"

They both turned to see Mia, her best friend, walking towards them with a surprised look. Ayla's heart sank, caught off guard by the sudden intrusion.

"Mia, hey!" Ayla forced a smile, trying to keep her voice steady.

Mia gave Caden a curious look, clearly trying to figure out who he was. "I didn't mean to interrupt. I was just walking home and saw you two."

Caden, always quick on his feet, flashed a charming smile. "You're not interrupting. I'm Caden, by the way."

Mia gave him a friendly nod, but her gaze shifted back to Ayla, full of questions. Ayla knew Mia could sense the tension between them, and she dreaded the interrogation she'd face later.

After a few awkward pleasantries, Mia excused herself, leaving them alone again. But the magic of the moment had faded. Ayla felt the weight of Caden's question hanging in the air, but she couldn't bring herself to answer it now.

They resumed their walk, but the silence was different this time—heavy and uncertain. When they reached her apartment, they stood outside, both unsure of what to say.

"I had a great time tonight," Caden finally said, his voice soft.

"Me too," Ayla replied, her heart aching with everything she'd left unsaid.

They stood there, lingering, as if neither of them wanted the night to end. But eventually, Caden gave her a small smile and turned to leave.

As she watched him walk away, Ayla felt a pang of regret. She knew she was running out of time to be honest with him. But the fear of crossing that line, of risking everything, kept her silent.

And as she closed her door, she realized that sometimes, the hardest thing was not what you said—but what you left unsaid.
