The Ruler's shadows held Niamh captive, as Eli pleaded with her friend.
"Niamh, remember our laughter, our adventures?" Eli asked.
Niamh's gaze faltered, her eyes searching.
"Remember the oath we swore?" Eli continued. "To protect the realms together?"
Aethon stepped forward. "Niamh, we can help you break Xaren's hold."
Niamh's expression twisted. "You don't understand...Xaren's power..."
The Ruler intervened. "Perhaps a glimpse of her past will aid your cause."
The Ruler's shadows conjured visions of Niamh's history.
Niamh's childhood, filled with loneliness.
Her discovery of magic, and Xaren's manipulation.
Eli's heart ached. "Niamh, we're here for you."
Niamh's gaze locked onto Eli.
For an instant, her true self shone.
"I...I remember," Niamh whispered.
Xaren's control surged.
"No!" Niamh screamed. "I won't betray Xaren!"
The Ruler's shadows tightened.
"Decide, Niamh," Eli urged. "Friendship or darkness?"
Niamh's expression contorted.
"I...I choose..." Niamh paused.
Suddenly, a dark figure emerged.
"Xaren," Aethon growled.
Xaren's presence darkened the realm.
"Niamh, my loyal servant," Xaren whispered.
Niamh's eyes dimmed.
"My lord," Niamh replied.
Eli's heart sank.
