Eli's world crumbled as Aethon's betrayal sank in. Kaidën's anguished roar echoed through the glade.
"Aethon, how could you?" Eli whispered.
Aethon's gaze dropped.
"For Aethereia's survival...I had no choice."
The Shadow King's laughter boomed.
"Enough sentiment. Aethon, claim Eli's heart."
Aethon's steps faltered.
"Elianor...forgive me."
Eli's heart shattered.
"You're no better than Lyra," Eli spat.
Aethon's eyes flashed with pain.
"I'll make it quick."
Kaidën lunged forward.
"Aethon, don't!"
The Shadow King's darkness restrained Kaidën.
"Watch as Aethon claims Eli's heart," the Shadow King sneered.
Luna stirred, her moonlight-infused sword trembling.
"Aethon...don't do this."
Aethon's resolve wavered.
But the Shadow King's influence strengthened his resolve.
With a heavy heart, Aethon reached for Eli.
Eli's magic surged.
"Aethon, no!"
A blinding light erupted.
When the light faded, Eli stood alone.
Aethon lay motionless.
Kaidën and Luna were nowhere to be seen.
The Shadow King's laughter echoed.
"Eli, you're mine now."
Eli's despair deepened.
Was everyone she trusted going to betray her?
