I felt the tree. It was rough. My fingertips snagged bits of peeling bark as I trailed them down to the base. The bark was brittle too. It only took a light press for some of its skin to crumble into smaller flakes. But it was quite hard. The tree always pushed back against my palm when I tried to press deeper.
