The car ride was quiet. Nathan occasionally stared at the forlorn-looking young woman who seemed lost in her thoughts.
Finally, the car stopped at their residence and Ashley got out, ignoring the man. Nathan followed, a sort of desperateness emanating from his being. "Ashley, wait." The young woman halted in her steps right at the foot of the staircase.
She didn't turn, waiting for her husband's next words. "What you saw this morning was an accident. She fell on top of me."
Nathan never gave excuses for his entanglement with Vanessa. It was as though he had silently complied with Ashley's thoughts of him having an affair. In the past, she hated that he had never given an explanation. But right now, hearing him give her one sounded like a randomly stupid excuse.
"I don't care anymore, Nathan. You can do whatever you want with her." She moved to leave his presence, but he held on to her, blocking any chance of her escape.
