She stood there looking at the huge gates with 'Hartley West Highschool' engraved on it. It was a posh school where the students who attended the school were mostly heirs and heiresses. There were scholarship students like her though they were a handful. She was a sponsored student under Montogomery Foundation, her name is Wave Fishers.
"Do you want to use the main gate?" shouted the gateman pulling her out of her trance.
"No sir!" she took a deep breath as she got inside the school while chanting 'Everything will be great, you can do this!"
She continued walking but she just couldn't help but being mesmerized with the school, there was this beautiful well-trimmed lawn. She came across a large oak tree which stood proudly at the center, surrounding the tree, colorful flower beds burst with seasonal blooms-bright tulips, cheerful daisies and fragrant marigolds that attract fluttering butterflies. Benches were strategically placed under the tree and along the pathways.
A small path of smooth stones meanders through the lawn, leading students from one building to another. There was a parking lot adjacent to the lawn where rows of luxury vehicles glinted under the sunlight, among them, a shiny black Tesla stood out while a classic red Ferrari captures Wave's attention.
"It'll not be surprising if I get lost here!" she continued walking as she got near the entrance of one building that she didn't know if it was the administration as that was her destination.
"Hi, excuse me, where is the administration block at?" she asked the two students seated at the staircase entrance fiddling with their phones. The two girls didn't even look at her as they outright ignored her.
"Ohkaay! guess I expected that," Wave moved to other students seated not far from there but she didn't have high expectation as everyone thought that spoiled rich kids were snobbish so did she.
Before she could even approach them, the bell rang, and everyone left the grounds in a blink of an eye everyone was gone and there she was stranded!
Wave thought to go back to find the gateman for directions but thinking back to the creepy look he had she decided against it.
"You!" called a man standing with a black cane with a very funny posture, " you need your own personal bell miss?"
Wave clutched the long straps of her backpack to hide her nervousness of how that teacher intimidated her,
" Am a new student, it's my first day."
Mr. Rupert Bonsteins was his name. One of the strict and nosy teachers. " You are Wave Fishers?" he pushed his glasses as he watched her with his hawk-like gaze.
"How do you..." wave stuttered.
"It's very cynical for Hartley to have new students in the middle of the term, but then given your grades it won't be surprising!" he said, "but why are you standing here like a confused buffoon?"
"I got lost," explained Wave.
Few minutes later, Wave was in the hallway on her way to her class alongside Mr. Simmons, her homeroom teacher.
"Good afternoon," Mr. Simmons greeted the class.
"Good afternoon Mr. Simmons,"
'I'd like to introduce a new member of the class," he paused then continued, "Wave introduced yourself to the class," he turned towards Wave as he gestured for her to step forward.
"Hi, Am Wave Fishers, hope we get along," she said.
"Are you done?" she nodded which made the class burst into laughter, " well, that's quite short and brief! what did I expect from the country's top student? okay! guys let's make her feel at home."
Mr. Simmons left immediately Wave settled at her seat. As soon as he left, Mrs. Lammy, their math teacher got inside ready for their lesson. Soon after Mrs. Lammy began teaching, Wave just couldn't help noticing how the school was different compared to how she imagined it to be. From where she was seated, she could see how her classmates were really concentrating and not even one of them was sleeping or using their phones.
It was quite different from how Wave envisioned students from a posh school and rich backgrounds behaved. The students were too disciplined. But what could she expect from the best school in the country. Soon after, the bell rang for lunch break, Mrs. Lammy left the class like immediately. So much punctuality!
Some students came and said Hi to wave as they left with their groups. As Wave was trying to arrange her notes for that previous lesson, a girl with a bright smile and a lot of colorful bracelets that stood out aproached her. She felt drawn to her infectious enthusiasm.
"Hey! I'm Dream, my family name is Sterling," she introduced herself as she came to settle on the chair Infront of Wave, "Do you want to go to the lunchroom with me?" Dream asked, her eyes sparkling with warmth and anticipation.
Before she could answer, Taya Collins approached her, her specs glinting in the sunlight passing through the classroom windows,
"Don't! she'll make this her everyday routine," she stood near where Wave and Dream were seated.
"Tayaaa!" Dream pouted,
"I'm Taya, the class rep, I'll show you around later if you are free,"
"Sure!" said Wave
" Wave is my best friend! its normal for friends to hang out, best friends, even more!" Dream argued not liking how Taya said about her.
"What do you mean best friends? According to research, it takes weeks to be friends and for best friends, even more!" Taya told her before she changed the subject, "Did you see how you shocked poor Mr. Simmons with your introduction Wave?"
After she said that, the trio burst out laughing.
"Normally, people say their hobbies, favorite food, favorite vacation place, best musician and even their whole family lineage!" they laughed, "but for you... 'Hi, am Wave Fishers hope we get along' " she mimicked Wave.
After they were done laughing, they got up and headed to the lunchroom after Dream suggested for the third time. Wave found the girls were really so friendly that she couldn't help but wonder how they'd just befriend someone and call them best friend already.
As they walked side by side through the hallway, Dream instinctively intertwined her arms with Wave and Taya. It was odd for Wave but surprisingly she was comfortable.
"Stop squeezing me! don.t you know the meaning of space?" Taya complained but she didn't shove Dream aside and from Wave's perspective she could see that Taya was used to Dream's behavior.
As the trio entered the lunchroom, Wave still couldn't help but wonder where the students were since there were countable people in the lunchroom.
"The guys hate the cafeteria food so as soon lunch hits they take off, some go home while a bunch of them go to that burger place and restaurant down the road," Taya tried to explain to Wave after she sensed her turmoil.
"Oh! is the food that inedible?" Wave picked her tray while practically readying herself for a stomachache.
Dream was the first to serve so Wave technically chose whatever she chose. She served herself some grilled chicken sandwich, fries and a fruit shake which was a different drink compared to Dream who took milk which the lactose intolerant Wave couldn't take.
On the side Taya just took a nut salad with black beans on the side and mango juice which was a very weird combination.
Wave took a few bites of her food expecting the worst to be caught off guard by the delicious taste.
"The food doesn't taste bad at all!" Wave said.
"I didn't say the food was awful, it's just that they don't like it and prefer other places," Taya argued as she took a bile of her salad, "Dream practically stuffs herself with all calory equipped foods."
"You two don't go out for lunch?" Wave asked.
"I'm not allowed to eat any type of junk food at home so I eat here and restaurants are way out of question because of my dad" Dream explained.
"For me, I just find it a hustle, I'd rather eat here than travel to and fro when I have a lot of things to do."
After finishing their lunch, the trio went for Wave's school tour where Wave learnt that the school principal was Dream's dad which explained her plight of why she couldn't go to any restaurant that is after they passed by his office and then met with him when making a detour back.
"Let's make a quick stop at the washroom before class," Taya suggested, glancing at the clock. With only a few minutes to spare, they left for the washroom.
"I can't believe we only have one period left. This day dragged on forever!" Dream went straight to the sink splashing water on her face.
The girls then finished up, heading towards the exit. They stepped back into the hallway and soon enough they arrived at their classroom and settled ready for Professor Gale's Geography class.
As the final bell rang signaling for the end of the day, the students gathered their thing ready to leave for home, a guy barged into the class, the heavy door slamming made everyone jump. His school trouser are the only indication he belonged to the school as his shirt is under a graphic hoodie beneath his sleek designer jacket matched with an expensive watch. His eyes cold and sharp surveying the room. The teacher faltered, words caught in his throat.
Fists loosely clenched at his sides.
"JACE!"
