Chapter 2 - It

 Rustle.

Chiiiiik.

The monster crawled forward slowly, eerily stepping on the same path the boy had run over, lowered its head and sniffed.

It could smell the old meat. It was not fresh, but that was okay as it was easier to catch than the little one that ran so fast.

It had been hunting the little one for a long time.

It cocked its heads, trying to remember when that was but soon gave up.

After all, it didn't really care when, all it knew is it was following the tempting smell the little thing emitted. It probably tasted even better, it thought.

As drool slipped down along its sharp teeth, full now of the rotting meat it had stumbled across, it savored the taste of the slightly stale snack.

A while later, once it was full, it tilted its head low to the cold ground. Breathing in deeply to try to catch the fading scent of its fleeing prey, it noticed the fast little one had managed to escape again.

Which was okay, it would just hunt again.

It snarled as one of its brethren tried to sneak a bite of what was left of the corpse it had found earlier thinking this one must be one of the new idiots that had been born, as the older ones knew not to eat its meal unless it indicated it no longer wanted it.

Feeling incensed at this foolish brother, it tried to cheer up at the thought of the fresh meat it would eat tomorrow.
