Atlas froze, his hold on me tightening briefly before he finally set me down. My feet hit the ground, but his hands lingered at my waist, steadying me. He turned toward the source of the voice, his expression darkening.

A soldier stood a few steps away, his stance rigid and formal, but his expression gave off a casual vibe—completely different from the other soldiers we'd passed. "I see you brought a visitor," he said, his eyes flickering briefly to me, laced with subtle disdain before snapping back to Atlas. "Did I imagine that?" I thought, shaking off the uneasy feeling.

"Yes, Kaleb," Atlas's voice cut through the tension. "Iris, this is Kaleb, my second-in-command and a good friend." He gestured toward the man. I forced a polite smile, but Kaleb's expression hardened.

"I don't think I need to introduce Iris to you," Atlas added with a sly grin that felt more mocking than friendly.
