"Go on Joey, why don't you tell us what it is you see on the board," I said in the softest voice I could master.
"That is a cat,Miss.Spencer ",Joey said in a tiny voice. I strained to hear his answer but in the end I got what he said. The truth is I was going for a dog for the letter 'd' but my drawing is terrible so my point had failed through. I tried to think of words that begun with a 'd' that were easier to draw and practical enough for the kindergarten students to understand.
'Dirt','no,you can't draw that','drink','no,that would be confusing,is it a cup, water or just a drink'. Each word I thought of was something I could not draw.
Janet, one of the brightest kids I had worked with so far, raised her hand and said,'door',she must have seen my struggle.
I burned with shame as I drew a door on the board and asked each of them to recite. That was very perceptive of her but not a good look on me. I needed to get my head back in the game. This had been going on for the past couple of weeks. Little mishaps that could have been construed as normal were becoming a daily occurence that it begun to seem not so normal after all. I could not fully concentrate on anything for a long period of time and had been lagging behind on the course work for my class. This would in the long run affect my students' grades and no doubt get to the dean. Who knew how long I would be able to keep this up,or keep my job. All this because of my dear brother Jonah.
