Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Shadows in the Snow

The oppressive force of the Shadowborn qi weighed heavily on the mountain air, suffocating and dark. The once-clear night sky seemed to grow darker still, as though the very shadows of the mountain had come alive. A low, guttural growl echoed through the clearing, followed by the unmistakable sound of heavy, dragging footsteps.

The White Lotus warriors froze, their weapons still raised, their faces pale with shock. Even Elder Zhou stood rigid, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword tightly as his eyes widened in disbelief.

"They're here," Lan Yue whispered, her voice barely audible over the growing wind.

The Shadowborn were more than just creatures of darkness—they were an ancient force of destruction, their power rooted in dark qi, and their hunger insatiable. The forms that emerged from the shadows were twisted, unnatural. Their bodies were cloaked in the swirling dark energy that marked them, their faces obscured by hoods, their glowing green eyes the only sign of life in the void that surrounded them.

Lan Yue's pulse quickened as she counted at least a dozen of them, their forms blending into the shadows as they moved. Each one carried a weapon—blades made of pure dark energy that crackled with malevolent intent. They were stronger than the ones they had fought before—more powerful, more dangerous. And they were coming straight for them.

"They've come for the Citadel," Li Feng muttered, his grip tightening on his spear. "They know we're getting close."

Lan Yue's chest tightened. The Citadel. The heart of the Shadowborn's power. If the creatures had come to defend it, then they were on the right path. But that knowledge did little to ease the fear that gnawed at her insides. The fight ahead would be brutal—and this time, they couldn't afford to hold back.

"Lan Yue!" Elder Zhou's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. "This is your doing!"

Lan Yue's eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat as she turned to face him. His face was twisted with anger, but there was also fear in his eyes—a fear that he was trying to mask with blame.

"You led them here!" Elder Zhou continued, his voice rising as he pointed an accusing finger at her. "This is what happens when you defy the council!"

Lan Yue's heart sank, but before she could respond, one of the Shadowborn lunged toward them with a roar, its dark blade slicing through the air.

"Enough!" Li Feng shouted, his spear flashing as he blocked the attack. The force of the blow sent a shockwave through the snow, and for a moment, the air crackled with the clash of qi—dark and light colliding in a violent burst of energy.

"There's no time for this," Li Feng growled, his voice filled with urgency. "If we don't fight them together, we're all dead."

Lan Yue stepped forward, her sword raised as she faced the advancing Shadowborn. "He's right," she said, her voice steady. "This isn't about the council anymore. We have to survive."

Elder Zhou hesitated, his gaze flicking between Lan Yue, Li Feng, and the approaching Shadowborn. His face was lined with frustration, anger, and something else—something that spoke of the deep conflict within him. But when the Shadowborn charged again, their forms a blur of darkness, Elder Zhou's expression hardened.

"Fine," he muttered, his sword flashing as he stepped into the fray. "But this isn't over, Lan Yue."

Lan Yue barely had time to acknowledge his words before the battle erupted around them.

The clearing was suddenly alive with the sound of clashing weapons, the roar of dark qi, and the grunts and shouts of the warriors as they fought. The Shadowborn were relentless, their attacks swift and brutal, their blades cutting through the air with deadly precision.

Lan Yue moved on instinct, her body a blur of motion as she parried and countered each strike. Her sword glowed with the radiant energy of the Lotus Flame, the light pushing back the shadows as she fought. Every time her blade made contact with a Shadowborn, their form flickered, the dark qi that sustained them weakening for a moment before they surged forward again.

But there were too many.

Beside her, Li Feng fought with the same deadly grace that had always impressed her. His spear was a blur of dark energy, slicing through the air as he dispatched one Shadowborn after another. His movements were fluid, controlled, each strike perfectly timed. But even he was beginning to tire. The sheer number of enemies was overwhelming, and no matter how many they took down, more seemed to rise from the shadows.

"Fall back!" Li Feng shouted, his voice hoarse as he spun to block another attack. "We can't fight them all here!"

Lan Yue's breath came in ragged gasps as she deflected another blow, her muscles burning with exhaustion. She could feel the strain of the battle wearing on her, the weight of the dark qi pressing down on her like a suffocating blanket. But even as the fatigue set in, she knew they couldn't stop. Not yet.

"We need to draw them away from the open!" Lan Yue called out, her voice strained as she glanced at the White Lotus warriors. "Into the trees! We can use the terrain to our advantage!"

The warriors, though hesitant at first, quickly followed her lead, retreating toward the line of trees at the edge of the clearing. The Shadowborn pursued them relentlessly, their dark forms darting through the snow like shadows brought to life.

Lan Yue's heart raced as she fought her way toward the trees, her sword cutting through the air in a blur of light. She could feel the presence of the Shadowborn all around her—their dark energy pulsing in the air, their movements swift and deadly. But she couldn't let herself falter. Not now.

As they reached the trees, the terrain shifted in their favor. The dense foliage provided cover, forcing the Shadowborn to slow their approach. Lan Yue and the others used the natural barriers to their advantage, positioning themselves between the trunks of the trees to block the Shadowborn's attacks.

"Don't let them surround you!" Lan Yue shouted, her voice strained as she blocked another strike. "Stay together!"

The warriors moved with precision, their training taking over as they formed a defensive line within the trees. Lan Yue fought beside them, her sword a blur of motion as she deflected each attack. But even with their newfound advantage, the Shadowborn were relentless.

"Lan Yue!" Li Feng's voice cut through the chaos, drawing her attention.

She turned just in time to see a massive Shadowborn—larger than any they had faced before—charging toward them. Its dark form pulsed with energy, its glowing eyes locked onto Lan Yue with murderous intent.

Her breath caught in her throat as the creature lunged toward her, its dark blade raised high. She barely had time to raise her sword to block the strike, the force of the blow sending shockwaves through her arms. The impact was so strong it nearly knocked her off her feet, but she gritted her teeth and held her ground.

The Shadowborn pushed against her, its strength overwhelming, and for a moment, Lan Yue thought she wouldn't be able to hold it off. But just as the creature was about to overpower her, a flash of dark energy sliced through the air, striking the Shadowborn in the side.

Li Feng's spear pierced the creature's torso, the dark qi surging through the weapon as he forced it back.

"Get back!" Li Feng growled, his voice filled with intensity as he pushed the creature away.

Lan Yue stumbled back, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she watched Li Feng fight the massive Shadowborn. His movements were a blur of dark energy, each strike precise and deadly. But even as he fought, she could see the strain in his posture, the exhaustion in his eyes.

"We need to end this," Lan Yue whispered to herself, her heart pounding in her chest.

The Shadowborn were growing stronger. If they didn't find a way to stop them soon, they would be overwhelmed.

As the battle raged around her, Lan Yue's mind raced, searching for a solution. There had to be a way to disrupt the dark qi that fueled the Shadowborn—a way to weaken them long enough to escape.

And then, the answer came to her.

"The symbols!" Lan Yue shouted, her voice filled with sudden clarity. "We need to destroy the symbols on their bodies!"

Li Feng's eyes flickered to hers, his expression sharp. "The markings—they're the source of their power?"

Lan Yue nodded, her heart racing. "It's how they're connected to the dark qi! If we destroy the symbols, we can weaken them!"

Without hesitation, Lan Yue surged forward, her sword glowing brightly with the power of the Lotus Flame as she aimed for the symbol etched into the massive Shadowborn's chest. Her blade sliced through the air, cutting through the dark qi that surrounded the creature.

The impact was immediate.

The Shadowborn let out a guttural roar, its form flickering as the dark energy that sustained it began to unravel. The symbol on its chest shattered, and the creature crumbled into a cloud of black smoke, vanishing into the night.

Lan Yue's chest heaved with exhaustion, but a surge of hope filled her as she turned to face the remaining Shadowborn.

"We can end this," she whispered, her voice filled with determination.

With renewed strength, she and Li Feng pressed forward, their weapons aimed at the symbols on the Shadowborn's bodies. One by one, the creatures fell, their forms dissolving into smoke as the dark qi that bound them was destroyed.

As the last of the Shadowborn crumbled into the snow, the clearing fell into an eerie silence, the oppressive weight of the dark qi finally lifting.

Lan Yue stood in the center of the battlefield, her sword still glowing faintly with the remnants of the Lotus Flame's power. Her chest heaved with exhaustion, her body trembling from the strain of the battle, but they had won.

For now.

Li Feng appeared beside her, his breath coming in ragged gasps, but his expression was filled with the same determination that burned within her.

But even as the threat of the Shadowborn faded, Lan Yue's heart remained heavy. The fight was far from over. The Citadel still lay ahead, and the darkness they had just faced was only a taste of what awaited them.

"We survived," Lan Yue whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the wind.

Li Feng nodded, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "For now."

As the night deepened and the shadows stretched long across the snow, Lan Yue knew one thing for certain: their greatest battle was yet to come.
