Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Into the Eastern Mountains

The cold wind howled as Lan Yue, Li Feng, and a small group of White Lotus Clan warriors moved swiftly through the snow-covered paths leading to the eastern mountains. The sense of urgency weighed heavily on the group, each of them understanding that the Shadowborn had already struck. Every moment they lost meant more lives in peril, and the gravity of that reality spurred them on, their steps quick and determined.

Lan Yue's heart pounded in her chest as she pushed forward, her hand gripping the hilt of her sword. She had been trained to face any enemy, to stand tall no matter the threat, but this—this felt different. The Shadowborn had never attacked so boldly before, and the idea that they were growing more organized sent a chill through her that had nothing to do with the cold air.

Beside her, Li Feng moved with a quiet, focused intensity. His dark eyes scanned the horizon, always alert, always prepared. Though they hadn't spoken much since leaving the fortress, the air between them crackled with unspoken tension. Their bond had deepened, but it remained fragile, and the weight of their respective loyalties to their clans hung over them like a shadow.

As the group continued their trek through the winding mountain paths, Mei Ling caught up to them, her breath visible in the frigid air. "The outpost is just ahead," she said, her voice tight with urgency. "There's no telling how many of the Shadowborn remain, but we should assume the worst."

Lan Yue nodded, her jaw clenched. She could feel the rising dread in her chest, but she forced it down, keeping her focus on the mission ahead. "We'll approach quietly. We can't afford to rush in without knowing what we're up against."

Li Feng shot her a glance, his eyes flickering with agreement. "We'll split into two groups," he said, his voice low but authoritative. "One from the north, one from the east. We surround them and strike from both sides."

Lan Yue quickly gave orders to the rest of the warriors, organizing them into smaller groups. Mei Ling would lead the northern group, while Lan Yue and Li Feng would approach from the east. It was a risky plan, but they didn't have the luxury of time. Every moment counted, and if the Shadowborn were still at the outpost, they would need to act swiftly to take them down.

As they reached the outskirts of the outpost, the air grew thick with the heavy scent of smoke and something darker—an energy that made the hair on the back of Lan Yue's neck stand on end. The shadows around them seemed to stretch unnaturally, warping under the weight of the dark qi that filled the area.

The sight that met them when they reached the clearing was worse than Lan Yue had imagined.

The outpost was in ruins, its once-strong walls crumbled and broken, the remnants of the battle scattered across the snow. Dark scorch marks marred the ground where the Shadowborn's dark energy had struck, and the bodies of fallen warriors lay still, their faces twisted in pain.

Lan Yue's breath caught in her throat as she took in the devastation. The White Lotus Clan had always prided itself on its ability to protect its people, to stand against any threat. But here, in the heart of their territory, their defenses had been shattered, and their warriors had fallen.

Li Feng's eyes darkened as he surveyed the scene, his grip tightening on his spear. "This wasn't just an attack," he said quietly. "It was a slaughter."

Lan Yue swallowed hard, her chest tightening with a mix of grief and anger. "We need to find out if any of the survivors are still here."

Without another word, they moved forward, their steps careful as they navigated the wreckage. The air was thick with the stench of death and decay, and the silence that hung over the outpost was suffocating. But as they ventured deeper into the ruins, a faint sound caught Lan Yue's attention—a low, barely audible groan.

She stopped, her heart racing as she scanned the area, her eyes narrowing as she spotted movement beneath a pile of debris. "There!" she called, rushing toward the source of the sound.

Li Feng was right behind her as they reached the collapsed section of the wall, their hands quickly clearing away the rubble. Beneath the stones, they found a young warrior, barely conscious, his face pale and bloodied.

"Help me," Lan Yue said, her voice tight with urgency as she knelt beside the wounded man.

Li Feng didn't hesitate, moving to assist as they carefully lifted the warrior from the rubble. His breathing was shallow, his body limp, but he was alive.

"Shadowborn... they came from the mountains," the warrior rasped, his voice barely audible. "Too many... we couldn't hold them off..."

Lan Yue's heart sank. The Shadowborn had come from the mountains—likely from deep within the caverns that snaked beneath the peaks, a place where dark energy was said to thrive.

"Do you know where they went?" Li Feng asked, his voice calm but urgent.

The warrior's eyes fluttered closed for a moment, his breathing ragged. "They... they took prisoners. Some of us... still alive. Took them into the caves..."

Lan Yue and Li Feng exchanged a glance, their expressions grim. The caves beneath the eastern mountains were treacherous, filled with dark qi and twisting passages that could easily trap anyone who ventured too deep. If the Shadowborn had taken prisoners there, it would be nearly impossible to rescue them without putting themselves at great risk.

"We have to go after them," Lan Yue said, her voice steady despite the dread that gnawed at her insides. "If they have prisoners, we can't just leave them."

Li Feng nodded, his gaze hardening with determination. "Agreed. But we need to be smart about this. The Shadowborn know those caves better than we do."

Lan Yue stood, her mind racing as she considered their options. They couldn't afford to send their entire group into the caves—not without knowing what they were up against. But they also couldn't wait for reinforcements. Every moment they delayed meant the prisoners were in greater danger.

"We'll take a small group," Lan Yue decided, her voice firm. "Just enough to get in and out quickly. The rest of you will stay here and tend to the wounded."

Mei Ling, who had been inspecting the area with the northern group, approached them, her face pale with the weight of the situation. "Are you sure about this? The caves... they're dangerous."

Lan Yue nodded, her resolve unwavering. "We don't have a choice. If the Shadowborn are hiding in there, we need to face them."

Mei Ling hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Then I'll come with you."

"No," Lan Yue said, her tone gentle but firm. "I need you to stay here and help the others. We can't afford to lose more lives."

Mei Ling frowned but nodded reluctantly. "Be careful."

With that, Lan Yue turned to Li Feng, her heart pounding in her chest. "Let's go."

Li Feng's expression was unreadable, but she could see the determination in his eyes. "Stay close. We don't know what we'll find down there."

Together, they descended into the caves, the weight of the darkness pressing down on them with every step. The air grew colder the deeper they went, the light from their torches casting eerie shadows on the walls. The narrow passages twisted and turned, each one more disorienting than the last, and the sound of their footsteps echoed ominously in the stillness.

As they ventured deeper into the caverns, the presence of dark qi grew stronger, the energy thick and oppressive. Lan Yue could feel it pressing against her skin, making the air feel heavy and difficult to breathe. The deeper they went, the more she understood why the caves had always been avoided by her people.

"Do you feel that?" Lan Yue whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

Li Feng nodded, his grip tightening on his spear. "We're close. Stay alert."

Suddenly, a faint sound echoed through the darkness—a distant, ghostly whisper that seemed to come from the shadows themselves. Lan Yue's heart raced as she glanced around, her eyes narrowing as she tried to locate the source of the noise.

"Over there," Li Feng said, his voice low as he pointed toward a narrow passage to their right.

Lan Yue's pulse quickened as they moved toward the sound, their steps careful as they approached the narrow opening. The air was thick with dark qi, the energy growing stronger with every step, and Lan Yue could feel her muscles tense in response.

As they rounded the corner, they found themselves in a large, open cavern, its walls covered in strange, glowing symbols that pulsed with dark energy. In the center of the cavern stood a group of Shadowborn, their twisted forms hunched over the prisoners they had taken from the outpost.

Lan Yue's heart leaped into her throat as she spotted the prisoners—bound and unconscious, their faces pale and bloodied. There were only a handful of them, but they were alive. For now.

"We have to act now," Li Feng whispered, his voice tense. "Before they notice us."

Lan Yue nodded, her grip tightening on her sword as she prepared to strike. This was their chance to rescue the prisoners and stop the Shadowborn before they could do any more damage.

But even as they moved into position, Lan Yue couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.

And then, in an instant, the shadows shifted.

The Shadowborn leader—an imposing figure draped in tattered robes and pulsing with dark qi—turned his glowing eyes toward them, a twisted smile spreading across his face.

"We've been expecting you," he hissed, his voice echoing through the cavern like a death knell.
