Chapter 8 - Assessment

The two parents walked through their home's door and then went for the air, levitating as if gravity had unburdened them of its pull.

Adler Garidon and Manai Garidon had surpassed the basic levels of cultivation, and with that, they could fly.

They zoomed through the air, appearing to be a blur to their peasants and citizens that weren't privileged enough for significant prima control.

They went east, moving against the storm that was resolute on covering everything with snow.

A thin shield of energy–an extension of Manai's prima, encompassed Xeyus like a capsule, protecting him from the cold and the force of the wind.

It had been Lord Adler's dream to build a magic school in his poor barony, but checking the costs of building one, then maintaining it , and with the absence of talent amongst his people, he thought against it, he had more to lose.

After about an hour of flying through a snowstorm, the surroundings revealed itself to be less violent, and a beautiful town, under a duke Adler wasn't in the best terms with came into view

People walked about, some wearing thick clothing to protect themselves from the cold, others wearing light robes as they had the power of prima in their very hands.

As they were above, they could spot the towering structure of black that was the magic and martial art academy of the town, Bealair.

It was the tallest structure in the whole of the town, and the most eccentric, blending little with the smaller buildings that surrounded it.

They were freely let to pass, the duke was the kind lax with immigration and people were allowed to move however, "It's great for business." He had said.

And his statement had proved somewhat true as Bealair was one of the richest towns, and of the busiest, yet it was safe.

They stopped at the academy doors, two armed guards clad in red armour and armed with a lance and a sword. The two guards, Garidon, could tell that they were at least at the Dugen stage –powerful martial artists, but lacking the prowess for magic.

They were let in soon as they stated their business.

Inside of the cylindrical structure of black was a multitude of things. The academy in itself was named the Gnostic academy of Bealair, and the owner, whether the duke, a rich merchant or powerful cultivator thought the color red was a fitting color, and with it, most of the interior were chosen to be of the color red– from the walls, the doors and even many of the shelves that held martial arts manuals and instructions for magic.

They spotted a lady behind a desk with a sign carved into it that said,

"Begin enrollment here, or opt in for a body-soul aptitude."

Adler and Manai approached this woman, with Xeyus running his curious eyes around the place and mumbling some inaudible words.

"We would like to have our son assessed on his innate prima."

The lady receptionist wore an ornate robe of black and looked as absent-minded as anyone who didn't enjoy their job.

She sluggishly ran her eyes over the new customers and then stopped at Xeyus.

"Hmmm… how old is he?"

Manai and Adler turned to each other and then back, and Alder spoke,

"He's two months old, but as you can see, he's quite huge."

"Wooo!" The receptionist exclaimed, and tried to maintain her balance.

"He's a large kid, that must have hurt." She said, looking at Manai, hinting on the womanly matter of childbirth.

Adler frowned,

"We would like to check his innate prima."

"Oh yes!" She responded, and left her position behind the desk.

She looked to a guard who stood nearby, and cried, "Do not let anyone touch anything here while I am gone, tell those who want to see me to wait, and that I will be back in a bit."

The guard nodded and she walked prompting the parents to follow her. The three walked across a spiral stairs of a pair and got to a room that housed a large glass artifact.

The Garidon spotted students in robes and uniforms as they walked, some had even chosen to greet them.

"Hmmm hmm!" The receptionist cleared her throat, startling a sleeping young man.

"Hmmm…. What?! I wasn't sleeping, I swear!" He yelled oblivious of those before him.

He then spotted the receptionist.

"Oh, it's you." He said with slight scorn in his voice.

"Child's assessment."

"Oh right." He responded, and clumsily got up from his chair.

He looked at the pair and bowed slightly at them.

"I am Guise, the academy artifact technician. Now remember, the innate prima of a child doesn't dictate their talent, it only hints, you shouldn't treat them with disdain if the results disappoint you." He advised, knowing too well of parents whose attitude and love changed once realizing their children's little potential, it was heartbreaking to see the anger and contempt in their eyes.

Manai nodded to his words, Adler made no gesture.

"Right." Guise spoke and brought forward his hand to collect the boy.

He was handed Xeyus, and the technician slowly walked to the ring-shaped artifact that hung in the wooden wall.

Theirs was on the much cheaper side, there were smaller and more expensive artifacts that could easily reveal a person's prima ability.

He placed the child on the sturdy thin artifact embedded on the wall, and he breathed a mist.

Prima breath they called it, achieved by those with plentiful spiritual energy of which are exceedingly rare and highly valued.

The Garidon family had never had a propensity for magic weaving and they cared little for it. Most of the mages utilized prima as martial artists anyways and more often than not used it as a crushing or piercing energy in attacks rather than a slow complicated spell that consumed quite the amount of prima.

Usually, they would draw symbols on the runes to activate the spell, but it wasn't needed as the symbols themselves were already engraved on the artifact, and once the mist wafted to the artifact, it vibrated and little lines of orange light gathered around it, starting from where the child was placed.

More lines meant more aptitude.

The parents watched in earnest as the lines grew.
