Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: Combat Trials

The morning sun filters through the forest, its golden rays illuminating the damp earth below. Ash stands at the edge of a clearing, his wolf companion by his side, their breaths synchronized, calm but ready.

Pyre leans against a nearby tree, his arms crossed and his crimson eyes fixed on Ash. His expression is unreadable, but the weight of his expectations hangs heavily in the air.

"Your training has been sufficient," Pyre says, his voice steady. "Now we see if you've learned anything."

Before Ash can respond, there's a rustling sound from the trees ahead. Branches creak, and a low growl echoes through the forest. Emerging from the shadows is a creature—part monkey, part fusion. Its elongated limbs are wiry and muscular, its claws glinting in the dappled sunlight.

The monkey fusion screeches, baring its sharp teeth. It leaps from branch to branch with terrifying speed, closing the distance in an instant.

Ash doesn't flinch. He shifts into the stance Pyre drilled into him for weeks, his weight balanced, his fists steady. The fusion lunges at him, its claws aimed for his throat, but Ash reacts swiftly. His fist shoots forward, a single punch colliding with the monkey's chest.

The force is overwhelming. The monkey fusion's chest caves in with a sickening crunch, and its lifeless body crumples to the ground, dust rising around it.

Pyre smirks from his perch. "One down," he says. "Don't get cocky. This is only the beginning."

The victory is short-lived. The forest erupts into chaos as more creatures emerge from the shadows. A horde of fusions charges toward Ash, their grotesque forms a mix of animal and human parts.

Ash braces himself, his wolf growling beside him. The first wave reaches him—small creatures with razor-sharp claws and feral eyes. Ash moves with precision, dodging their strikes and countering with crushing blows.

He leaps onto a low-hanging branch, using his elevated position to survey the battlefield. The creatures swarm below, snarling and clawing at the tree. Ash grabs a handful of dirt and sand, hurling it into their eyes, blinding them temporarily.

He uses the chaos to his advantage, jumping from branch to branch, striking down creatures with calculated blows. His wolf tears through the horde below, its crimson claws ripping apart anything that gets too close.

Despite their progress, the horde doesn't stop. Larger fusions begin to emerge—hulking beasts with thick hides and terrifying strength. One charges at Ash, its massive horns aimed at his chest. Ash rolls to the side at the last second, grabbing a sharp branch and driving it into the creature's neck.

But even as the horde diminishes, a new threat appears.

The ground trembles beneath Ash's feet. Trees sway as a massive figure pushes through the forest. Towering over everything is a gorilla fusion, its body covered in jagged scars and patches of fur. Its fists are the size of boulders, and its glowing red eyes burn with rage.

The creature roars, the sound shaking the forest and causing smaller creatures to flee. Ash's wolf growls, but even it seems hesitant.

Ash grits his teeth, adjusting his stance. The gorilla charges, its movements surprisingly fast for its size. Ash dives out of the way as its fist slams into the ground, leaving a deep crater.

He climbs a nearby tree, trying to gain a vantage point, but the gorilla simply rips the tree from its roots, tossing it aside like a twig. Ash barely manages to leap to safety, landing hard on the ground.

The gorilla advances, its massive shadow looming over Ash. He throws a punch, aiming for its chest, but it's like hitting solid stone. The gorilla grabs him, its enormous hand wrapping around his torso. It squeezes, and Ash feels his ribs creak under the pressure.

"Enough."

Pyre's voice cuts through the chaos like a blade.

The gorilla freezes, its glowing eyes narrowing as it turns toward the sound. Pyre steps forward, his movements calm and deliberate, as if he's taking a casual stroll. His crimson hair catches the light, and his presence fills the clearing with an undeniable authority.

Ash, barely conscious, watches through blurred vision as Pyre approaches.

The gorilla roars, raising its massive fist to strike, but Pyre doesn't flinch. He lifts a single finger, pointing at the creature's hand.

There's a flash of crimson light, and the gorilla's hand disintegrates, leaving behind a smoking stump. The creature howls in pain, stumbling backward, but Pyre doesn't stop.

With a flick of his wrist, flames erupt around the gorilla, encasing it in a fiery inferno. The creature thrashes and roars, its massive body consumed by the flames. Within moments, it collapses, reduced to ash and embers.

Pyre turns to Ash, his expression unreadable. "You've come far," he says, his voice steady. "But you're still weak."

Ash, still gasping for air, struggles to his feet. He meets Pyre's gaze, his body trembling but his resolve unbroken.

"Strength isn't just about survival," Pyre continues. "It's about control. Purpose. Without that, you'll always be prey to something stronger."

The battle was over. The forest was eerily quiet now, the chaos of the fight fading into stillness. Ash sat slumped against a tree, his breath ragged, his wolf companion curled at his feet, licking its paw casually as if it hadn't just survived a horde of monsters.

Pyre stood a few feet away, his crimson hair catching the faint glow of the setting sun. He was examining his hand, the very one that had just reduced a gorilla-sized monstrosity into a pile of ash. His expression was neutral, as if wiping out a beast twenty times Ash's size was no more significant than swatting a fly.

Ash, still catching his breath, squinted up at him, his crimson eyes narrowing with curiosity. "Master," he said, his voice hoarse from exertion, "what… what was that?"

Pyre turned, raising a single brow. "What was *what*?"

Ash motioned weakly toward the scorched ground where the gorilla fusion had once stood. "That. The whole… fire thing. You just pointed, and poof. It's gone. Like… how?"

Pyre's lips twitched, the faintest hint of a smile breaking through his usual stoic demeanor. "A trick," he said simply, turning away.

Ash groaned, dragging himself to his feet. "What kind of trick? Can you teach me?"

Pyre glanced back, his crimson eyes gleaming with a mischievous glint. "When your journey is complete," he said, his tone almost playful. "Then, maybe, I'll tell you."

Ash huffed, crossing his arms. "So… never?"

Pyre shrugged, smirking now. "Depends. How badly do you want to know?"

Ash frowned, trying to think of a clever response. "Badly enough to—"

Before he could finish, the wolf barked, bounding up to Pyre and wagging its tail furiously. Pyre knelt, scratching behind its ears, and the wolf let out a contented growl.

Ash stared, deadpan. "You're playing favorites."

Pyre didn't look up. "Your wolf listens. You? Not so much."

Ash threw up his hands. "I literally just fought a giant centipede, a monster horde, *and* a gorilla the size of a house, and I'm the one who doesn't listen?"

Pyre straightened, dusting off his hands. "Exactly. See? You're learning already."

Ash opened his mouth to retort but thought better of it. Instead, he muttered under his breath, "When this journey's over, I'm going to figure it out myself, and it's going to be cooler than yours."

Pyre's smirk widened. "Looking forward to it, Ash."

The wolf barked again, as if agreeing with Pyre.

Ash rolled his eyes. "Traitor."

With that, Pyre turned and started walking back toward the camp, the wolf trotting happily beside him. Ash lingered for a moment, staring at the charred remains of the gorilla fusion, and shook his head.

"Journey, huh?" he muttered to himself, cracking his knuckles. "Fine. I'll finish it. But when I learn that fire trick, I'm coming back to show you up, old man."

And with that thought, he followed, already planning his revenge—in the form of the most over-the-top fire move Pyre would ever see.

As the sun sets over the forest, casting everything in hues of orange and gold, Ash sits with his wolf by the remains of the gorilla fusion. The smell of charred flesh lingers in the air, a reminder of the battle.

Ash clenches his fists, feeling the lingering ache in his muscles and the fire in his heart. Pyre's words echo in his mind. Strength. Control. Purpose.

He looks at the wolf, its dark fur and crimson markings glowing faintly in the twilight. Together, they've come so far—but this is only the beginning.
