Raelynn sat at her usual spot in the dining room, nibbling on a piece of toast and trying to appear normal. Across from her, Elion was reading something on his phone. Sloane, as usual, was chatting away, breaking through the calm like she always did.
Despite the seemingly ordinary routine, Raelynn felt a tension brewing within her. She couldn't stop thinking about everything that had happened the night before. She chewed slowly, her eyes drifting to the plate of scrambled eggs in front of her, but she wasn't really paying attention to the food. Instead, her thoughts raced back to the secret door she'd discovered behind Elion's bookshelf.
What's inside it? she wondered, her curiosity gnawing at her like an itch she couldn't scratch. She'd come so close to going inside, but at the last second, she'd chickened out.
