The shock at his confirmation was enough to have a complete ninety degrees turn in her brain. From thinking nothing to think about everything. Her brain going at every direction, trying to understand, rationalize what was happening. Why was she proposed to. She breathed out, trying to pause or at least calm her brainstorming mind.
Headache suddenly kicked in. She massaged her temples, while staring at him in confusion. There were no way!
Alexander Smith, her idol, the man she had a crush on, a man who always felt unreachable to her, out of her grabs, her touch, was proposing to her. Wanted to marry her!
A man way older than her, who had three children. One with whom she shared the same age, who was also pursuing her. And two others, nineteen years old.
That man was proposing to her! He wanted to get married to her! As much as she felt flatted by his attention, there were no way she could say yes.
First, and most importantly, why would a man like him want to marry her? It made no sense!
"Pardon me Mr. Smith but I still don't understand. You want me to marry you?" He nodded.
"And why that?"
"Why not?" He asked back.
Why not? Ivy had a list she could bring up. His age, his status, his children, his wife! Why not? Everything was against the mere possibility of it happening!!
"I entered in all your criteria. I'm older, wealthy and don't want kids anymore."
"Exactly! Why would someone like you want someone like me? I fail to understand."
She was way too young for him. Standing side by side, they would be taken as father and daughter. With reason!
"Same question. Why would someone like you would want someone like me?"
"I didn't –"
"Your criteria, what you said is a perfect description of me. Why would you want someone like me? Why all this?" he cut off her sentence.
Ivy brows knitted at that but didn't speak about it. "Because I want to," she answered. There was no way she could tell him the real reason behind her decision. It was a secret she would die with.
"Ivy," he called her again. Her inside tingled, a warm sensation taking all over her body.
"I said I was a fan of yours, and loved your way of thinking. It also means I could easily guess you have something on your mind. Those words wasn't said without thoughts. I'm sure you pondered about it thousands times, reflected on it seriously before those left your mouth. There is no way you said those just like that." Touché Ivy wanted to say.
"So, if you want me to state the reason behind my proposal, share yours with me. Or we can still go on with this marriage without going in this trouble."
Trouble? She doubted wanting to know the reason behind his absurd action was going through trouble. Instead, the real trouble would be getting married to him without knowing why he wanted it that much. Why her? He could have any other woman, without much effort. He was a handsome man, it won't be a problem for him. Why her then?
"Think about it Ivy," he stood up from his seat and hang her a card.
"My private number. Give me a call when you take your decision," he said and left immediately she took it.
Her decision? She already had one. NO. There were no way she could accept such a non sense. It had no logic, big dark spot, loopholes and absurdity. A marriage between them could never happen.
It took Jiang Yuyan a few seconds to get in immediately Mr. Smith left. Entering, and seeing the trouble Ivy, she couldn't help but worry. Fearing Mr. Smith was a messenger of bad news.
"What did he want?" she asked.
Playing with cards, her gaze looking far away, she answered, with a level of a whisper, "He wants to marry me," she answered herself still not realizing what happened.
