Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: The Negotiation — Tang Lei’s Veto Power

For a basketball player, having the right agent can be transformative. From handling multi-million dollar contract negotiations to managing day-to-day matters, a skilled agent ensures that players can focus purely on the game without distractions. This level of support was precisely what Tang Lei was looking for.

"Alright, let's meet at noon tomorrow at the Rosewood Restaurant near you, does that work?" Rich Paul asked, his tone smooth.

"Perfect," Tang Lei replied, ending the call.

Later that night, as Tang Lei scrolled through sports headlines, unsurprisingly, articles about his clash with Embiid and Scott were everywhere. The comments sections buzzed with heated discussions, and while he was indisputably popular in China, overseas sentiments varied. Embiid's loyal fan base was quick to hurl criticism, with some even resorting to personal attacks. Tang Lei merely laughed it off. Envy is a sign of success, he thought, unbothered. As long as he continued playing well, everything else was just noise.

After a brief read-through, he called it a night.

The next day, Tang Lei woke up late, got ready, and headed out to his meeting with Rich Paul. The Rosewood Restaurant was a high-end spot renowned for its privacy, where each meal cost over $10,000 on average—a popular choice for VIP business meetings. Although he'd never visited a place like this, given his income from the Warriors' advance, he could afford it, though he personally preferred Chinese cuisine.

Upon arriving, Tang Lei was greeted by a man in a suit, about 5'6", standing up to shake his hand.

"Mr. Tang, a pleasure. I'm Rich Paul." The renowned agent flashed a welcoming smile and extended his hand.

"My pleasure. I hope I didn't keep you waiting." Tang Lei returned the handshake with equal courtesy.

"No, not at all. I arrived early," Rich said, gesturing for him to sit. "I went ahead and ordered a cappuccino, a steak, and a classic Italian pasta—figured you might like that. Anything else you'd like to add?"

"Thank you, but this is more than enough," Tang Lei replied with a chuckle.

After some small talk, Rich got straight to the point. "Tang, your current contract ends this season, correct?"

"Yes, that's right," Tang Lei confirmed.

"I've watched your recent games closely—outstanding performances. If you keep playing like this through the season, there will be no shortage of teams offering major contracts," Rich continued, "and I'd be thrilled to represent you. Whether you're interested in joining LeBron with the Lakers, moving to the big market in New York, or anything in between, I'll make it happen."

Tang Lei's response was calm, unphased by the praise or the tempting prospects. "I've heard great things about you, Rich, which is why I agreed to meet today. But right now, I'm focused solely on the Warriors. My only goal this season is to secure a championship and help Golden State complete their three-peat dynasty."

"Absolutely—winning the title is what counts most right now, and this is the perfect stage to prove yourself." Rich nodded, expertly validating Tang's priorities.

"Now, about this partnership you proposed—how do you envision us working together?" Tang Lei asked, cutting to the chase.

"I'd like to be your exclusive agent, dedicated to representing your best interests. Whether it's negotiating player contracts, handling endorsements, or overseeing commercial appearances, I'll make sure everything goes smoothly," Rich said. "As for our fees, standard rates in this field are 4-5% of a player's salary and around 25% for endorsements. However, given that you're still a rookie, and I genuinely believe in your potential, I'm willing to offer a small discount."

Tang Lei raised an eyebrow. "How much of a discount?"

"Four percent on salary, and let's say…24% on endorsements and appearances," Rich replied with a smile.

Tang Lei couldn't help but feel slightly amused by the minimal "discount." Generous, aren't we? he thought.

"That's still too steep. You're well aware of the massive market I bring from China," Tang Lei countered, shaking his head. The salary percentage was manageable, but taking nearly a quarter of his endorsement income was excessive.

"This is standard in the industry," Rich defended, "and my team will work tirelessly to secure your interests. Plus, you'll have full veto power on every deal."

"The salary percentage is fine, but I want endorsement fees capped at 15%," Tang Lei stated firmly.

"Fifteen percent?" Rich looked taken aback. Even LeBron didn't receive a deal that low.

"You approached me because of the lucrative Chinese market I represent. Frankly, I've already had numerous offers lined up; the only issue is my availability," Tang Lei explained, smiling yet unwavering. "If you're willing to meet my terms, we can move forward. If not, then let's just leave it as a friendly meeting."

His confidence left no room for negotiation.
