Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Outbreak Begins

The alley smelled of garbage and damp concrete as Jacob and Gina crouched behind a row of dumpsters, straining to hear above the cacophony of chaos spilling out into the streets. Jacob could feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins, his heart thundering in his chest. They had to move, but where?

"Did you see that?" Gina whispered, her voice trembling. "I think I saw someone get attacked."

Jacob peered cautiously around the edge of the dumpster. A small crowd had gathered at the mouth of the alley, eyes wide with fear as they stared at something out of sight. His stomach twisted as he tried to make sense of the chaos unfolding. What could be so horrifying that people stood frozen in terror?

"Maybe we should—" he began, but before he could finish his thought, a blood-curdling scream pierced the air, cutting through the din like a knife. The sound sent a shiver down Jacob's spine.

Then he saw it.

A figure stumbled into view, clothes torn and stained, skin pale and ashen. The person was swaying unsteadily, arms outstretched like a marionette whose strings had been cut. Jacob's blood ran cold as he realized the figure was covered in blood, blood that dripped from its mouth and matted in its hair.

"Gina, get back!" Jacob hissed, pulling her deeper into the shadows of the alley. "We have to get out of here."

But before they could retreat further, the crowd erupted into a frenzy. The figure lurched forward, and as if triggered by some unseen force, people began to scream, scrambling backward. Jacob's heart raced as he watched the scene unfold. The once-innocent passerby had transformed into a nightmare, a creature driven by an insatiable hunger.

"I—I think that's one of the people from the hospital," Gina stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "What's happening?"

Jacob felt a surge of dread wash over him. The stories he had heard earlier flashed through his mind—the reports of violent outbreaks, people attacking others without reason. The news had hinted at an infection, a plague that turned ordinary citizens into monsters. Was this the beginning?

Without waiting for an answer, Jacob grabbed Gina's wrist, pulling her further down the alley, away from the growing chaos. "We need to find a safe place—somewhere away from here."

They navigated through a series of dark alleys, listening to the distant sounds of chaos and panic echoing in the streets. Jacob's mind raced. They needed supplies, information, anything that could help them survive. But first, they needed to find a safe location.

"Where do we go?" Gina asked, breathless. "The stores are probably already looted. And if there are more of those things out there…"

"Let's head to my sister's place," Jacob suggested. "She lives on the other side of the park. We can check for supplies on the way."

"Are you sure she'll be safe?" Gina asked, concern etched across her face.

"I don't know," he admitted, "but it's our best option right now."

As they emerged from the alley onto a side street, Jacob's heart sank at the sight before them. The usually bustling road was now a war zone. Cars were abandoned, doors flung open, and shattered glass littered the ground. People ran in every direction, some crying, others shouting for help. A police car sped past, its sirens blaring, but it was clear they were overwhelmed.

Jacob spotted a small convenience store across the street, its lights flickering. "Let's check there for supplies," he said, taking Gina's hand and pulling her along.

As they approached, Jacob noticed a group of people huddled near the entrance, faces tense and frightened. "We're not the only ones looking for help," he murmured, eyes narrowing as he scanned the area. They needed to be cautious.

"Should we talk to them?" Gina asked hesitantly.

Before Jacob could respond, a loud crash reverberated from inside the store. The group at the entrance gasped, eyes widening in terror. "What was that?" one of them whispered, fear etched into their features.

"Let's stay back for a moment," Jacob said, instinctively pulling Gina closer. They ducked behind a parked car, heartbeats synchronized in their shared anxiety.

A figure stumbled out of the store—a man, disheveled and bloody, his clothes torn. Jacob's breath hitched as he saw the glazed look in the man's eyes, the wild, frantic movements that echoed the creature they had seen earlier. The man turned, spotting the group at the entrance, and without hesitation, he lunged at them.

Screams erupted as the crowd scattered in all directions. Jacob felt his heart plummet as chaos erupted before him. People stumbled over one another, trying to escape. He turned to Gina, panic rising in his throat. "We can't stay here! We need to go now!"

"Where?" she shouted over the noise.

"The park! We can cut through to the other side!" Jacob replied, urgency in his voice.

Together, they sprinted down the street, dodging panicked civilians. Jacob felt the heat of fear washing over him, the weight of the world pressing down on his shoulders. Each scream, each chaotic sound, was a reminder of how quickly everything had unraveled.

As they neared the park, Jacob glimpsed the manicured lawns and walking paths he had once taken for granted. Now it seemed like a battleground, with chaos spilling into the once peaceful setting. He could hear the distant sounds of sirens and shouting, mingled with the unmistakable roar of a growing horde.

"We have to find cover!" he shouted, glancing back to see if they were being followed. A small group of the infected staggered toward them from the direction of the store, their movements erratic and frenzied.

"Over there!" Gina pointed to a cluster of bushes that bordered a large tree, thick enough to provide some cover. Jacob nodded, and they dashed toward it, adrenaline propelling them forward.

As they crouched behind the bush, panting and wide-eyed, Jacob felt a wave of helplessness wash over him. The world as he knew it was gone, replaced by something dark and terrifying. The infected were out there, and soon they would be everywhere.

"We need to keep moving," Jacob said, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "I won't let anything happen to you."

Gina nodded, determination flashing in her eyes. "Let's get to your sister's place. She might have a plan."

With renewed resolve, they prepared to push through the park, hearts racing as the nightmare of the outbreak began in earnest.
