Chapter 10 - Pack Gossip

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the pack's territory. Alina trudged back to the main clearing after her training session with Maeve, still buzzing with the excitement of her progress. For the first time in a long while, she felt invigorated, ready to embrace the challenges ahead. But as she entered the heart of the pack, her heart sank at the sight of familiar faces. The murmurs started immediately, low and conspiratorial.

"Did you hear Maeve is back?" whispered one she-wolf, a disdainful edge to her voice.

"Yeah, I heard she's training Alina," another chimed in, the derision evident. "As if that'll help her. She'll always be an outcast."

Alina's stomach twisted at the words. They were whispers, but they felt like daggers aimed straight at her heart. Her shoulders slumped as she tried to ignore them, but the taunts were relentless.

"Why would Maeve waste her time on someone like Alina?" a male voice sneered from a nearby group. "It's not like she has any real potential."

"Maybe Maeve thinks she can turn Alina into something she's not," the first she-wolf replied with a chuckle. "Good luck with that!"

Alina's breath hitched, a lump forming in her throat. How could they say such things? She knew she was different, but she had hoped that her training would change their perception of her. She had fought hard for her newfound confidence, and yet here it was, crumbling like a house of cards.

Determined not to show how deeply their words affected her, Alina lifted her chin and walked past the group, forcing her expression to remain neutral. She knew Maeve was right—strength came from within, and she couldn't let the pack's opinion of her dictate her worth. Still, the weight of their disdain was heavy.

As she made her way to her mother's small cottage, she couldn't shake the feeling of isolation creeping back in. The whispers followed her, lingering in the air like an unwelcome shadow. What would it take for them to see her for who she was becoming?

Inside, the comforting scent of herbs and home-cooked meals enveloped her. Lila was in the kitchen, her hands busy kneading dough for the evening meal. Alina watched her mother, feeling the warmth of home wash over her. Lila looked up, her soft eyes filled with concern.

"Alina, dear, you look troubled," she said gently, brushing flour off her hands. "Did something happen during training?"

Alina hesitated, unsure if she wanted to share the pain of the pack's gossip with her mother. But Lila's gaze was kind and patient, urging her to open up. Finally, she sighed and spilled the words, "It's the pack, Mom. They're talking about me, about Maeve training me. They don't think I can change."

Lila's expression hardened, and she set aside her work to take Alina's hands in hers. "You can't let their words hold you back, Alina. They're afraid of what they don't understand. You're stronger than you think."

"I wish I believed that," Alina admitted, tears welling in her eyes. "It's hard to feel strong when everyone sees me as weak."

Lila's grip tightened as she looked Alina in the eyes, her voice steady and firm. "Strength isn't just about how others perceive you. It's about who you are inside. You have the blood of warriors in you, my dear. Your father believed in your potential, and I do too."

Alina nodded, feeling the warmth of her mother's words sink into her heart. But just as quickly as it came, doubt clawed back at her. "But what if I can't prove them wrong? What if I never become a warrior?"

"Then you'll still be my daughter," Lila reassured her. "You don't have to be perfect, Alina. Just be yourself, and don't let anyone's opinion define your worth."

The wisdom in Lila's words gave Alina a moment of peace, but the outside world was relentless. As she turned to leave, the whispers echoed in her mind. She knew her mother meant well, but how could she find the strength to defy the opinions of the pack?

Later that evening, as Alina and Lila prepared dinner, a commotion erupted outside. Voices grew loud, and the atmosphere shifted. Alina exchanged a worried glance with her mother, and they both hurried outside to see what was happening.

In the center of the clearing, a large crowd had gathered. At its center stood Lukas, flanked by his loyal followers. His voice carried across the clearing, commanding attention. "Listen up, everyone! I have something important to announce!"

The pack quieted, eyes trained on their Alpha, curiosity piqued. Alina felt a knot tighten in her stomach. She wasn't sure she wanted to hear what he had to say.

Lukas cleared his throat, a self-satisfied smirk on his face. "As many of you know, I've chosen my mate. Celine has proven herself time and again, and I'm proud to announce her as my chosen partner!"

A chorus of cheers erupted, but Alina felt a chill run down her spine. Celine? The beautiful she-wolf who had always looked down on her? The realization hit like a punch to the gut, and she could only stand there, frozen.

"What about Alina?" one voice piped up from the crowd, cutting through the applause. "Is she still training with Maeve? Isn't it just a waste of time?"

Lukas shot a glare in Alina's direction, his eyes narrowing. "We all know Alina is an outcast. It's about time she accepted her place." His voice dripped with disdain, and the pack nodded in agreement, laughter rippling through the crowd.

Alina felt the heat rise in her cheeks as humiliation washed over her. It was one thing to be the subject of gossip; it was another to have it thrown in her face like this. She could feel their eyes on her, judging and dismissive.

She glanced at Maeve, who stood at the edge of the crowd, her expression fierce and protective. "Don't listen to them, Alina," Maeve mouthed, her eyes locked onto Lukas. "You're stronger than they know."

But the words offered little comfort as Alina stood there, the laughter ringing in her ears like a mocking echo. She had been so focused on her training and the hope of proving herself, only to find that the pack had already made up their minds about her.

The crowd began to disperse, and as Alina turned to leave, she caught sight of Lukas and Celine, locked in a tight embrace. Alina felt her heart shatter, the pain sharp and unexpected.

"Are you okay?" Lila asked softly, coming to stand beside her.

Alina shook her head, fighting back tears. "No. I thought things were changing, but I guess they'll always see me as the weak one."

"Alina, don't let their words break you," Lila said firmly. "You're not weak. You're fighting for yourself. Remember that."

Alina took a deep breath, trying to absorb her mother's strength. She couldn't let Lukas or the pack dictate her worth. Maeve believed in her, and so did Lila. If she could just push through this darkness, maybe she could find the light.

As the stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky, Alina made a silent promise to herself. She would not give in to despair. She would continue to train, to grow stronger, and to prove that she was more than the whispers of the pack. With Maeve and Lila by her side, she would forge her own path, no matter how difficult the journey might be.

Tomorrow, she would step into the ring again—ready to fight, ready to reclaim her power.
