(Nicholas)
I sat on the edge of my bed, my hands resting on my knees as I stared at the floor. My fingers tangled in my hair, and I tugged slightly, hoping the small sting would clear my mind, but nothing eased the knot in my chest. Just as I was about to rise and pace, a soft knock broke the silence.
The sound was tentative, almost hesitant, and I knew instantly who it was. I pushed myself up, crossed the room, and pulled open the door to find Elara standing there. Her red hair framed her face, and her eyes held a softness that seemed almost out of place in the harsh world we inhabited.
"Nicholas," she said softly, stepping inside the room without waiting for an invitation. "I couldn't wait any longer to see you."
