Chapter 9 - Nutrient Solutions

Considering that the person in front of him was not as knowledgeable as his little sister, Felix tried be as clear as possible in convincing her that they were not important or wealthy enough to afford natural food since they were rare and valuable.

Natural green plants were only found on planets higher than grade B, and only those inhabitants could afford to eat natural food.

Rosalee was shocked to learn that other interstellar people lived by consuming nutrient solutions three times a day rather than eating natural food.

In fact, natural plants were nearly extinct on planets below grade B. Which means that people on lower grade planets have never seen green plants in their lives.

"Bu-but, how do we survive without plants?!" Rosalee was stunned. From where came from, she was raised to believe that all organisms rely on plants as their main source of food and oxygen. And without them to provide oxygen, humans would not be able to survive.

Even if a technology was developed to replace plants, would it be as beneficial as plants?

"Don't we have alien plants that does what you say?" Felix stumbled, unfamiliar with the term, "photo- photosynthesis? The process by which plants produce oxygen for us to breathe?"

He was inwardly amazed by his sister's second personality knowledge.

Rosalee felt strange, "weren't alien plants dangerous?" Felix nodded and shook his head, perplexing her with what he meant.

"Even though it is dangerous, it helps us live." Felix shrugged his shoulders and stated with smile.

"We have a love-hate relationship with it. At least from what I have seen, most alien plants are docile and harmless to humans, but there have been cases where they have attacked people unexpectedly. So they are not completely harmless."

Rosalee tapped the table slowly with her fingers, her mind racing. "So can we eat them?" This was the only issue that concerned her.

As long as she can eat those alien plants, she does not care if the alien plants are short or ugly.

She was not picky when it came to food.

Felix's eyes went wide, and he shook his head in denial right away, saying, "absolutely impossible!"

His outburst caught Rosalee off guard.

Felix was worried that she would not take his words seriously, so he declared with a serious face. "Never even think about eating them; they are very toxic and bad for our bodies! If you consume alien plants, your body would be completely destroyed by their powerful chaos."

Rosalee nodded in understanding though she had no idea what was 'chaos'.

Felix checked the time on his wristband and realized it had passed nine o'clock, so he stood up and decided to end the conversation for now.

Rosalee noticed his movements and asked, "Are you going anywhere?" She still had a number of questions.

Felix nodded, tapping on his wristband to message his friend while responding to her, "I have to go to work with Evan." As he picked up his bag and got ready to leave, he checked to make sure his messages had been sent, set the screen down, and spoke to her.

"If you need anything, feel free to message me while I am out; I will be back by eight o'clock."

Rosalee trailed behind him and, hearing his words, asked softly, "How does the nutrient solution taste?" She was intrigued but also hesitant to try it.

Felix looked at her conflicted expression and smiled awkwardly, "Not as bad as low-grade ones." The nutrient solutions he bought were of medium quality, so they tasted better than those of lower quality.

Rosalee bid him farewell and returned to her room, intending to use the star network and learn more about alien plants and other informations.

As she walked past the dining room, she hesitated for a long moment before grabbing the packet of nutrient solutions and carrying it with her.

She carelessly placed the packet beside her bed and accessed the star network. After searching the Star Network for the entire morning, she was able to find everything except the ones she wanted.

Even after using explicit words to cheat the system, the result did not meet her expectations.

She was feeling dizzy from hunger, and she was emotionally exhausted.

As someone who has been fed a variety of savory delicacies and delicious foods, how can she possibly bring herself to drink something as unpleasant as nutrient solutions?

It was better to starve her than to make her drink this stuff.

Rosalee tried to keep her sanity intact and avoid drinking the nutrient solution, but she gave in to her hunger and curiosity and took a tube to try.

The moment the green liquid hit her lips, her hand gripping the tube trembled and her face contorted like Grandma's.

So bitter!

She drank until the very last drop, then, unable to handle the bitterness, she rushed to the bathroom and spat out her tongue.

She gurgled the water in her mouth and spat it out, repeating the process multiple times until the bitterness subsided and she stopped, her face pale.

Felix stated that the nutrient solutions he provided were far better than the low grade ones; if she could not handle this level of bitterness, she was afraid to imagine how bitter the low grade ones must be.

Despite the extremely unpleasant taste, the effect was immediate. Rosalee could feel her hunger subsiding and her limbs becoming more energized.

She no longer felt like dying.

She stepped out of the bathroom and slumped onto the bed, mentally and emotionally exhausted from realizing that she had to continue living by drinking this bitter nutrient solutions.

She burst into tears when she thought of fried chicken, pizza, instant noodles, meat-filled dumplings, donuts, ice cream, crispy French fries, and other mouth watering dishes.

Her physical needs might be satisfied by the nutrient solutions, but what about her emotional and spiritual needs?

What should she do if she wanted to eat to relieve her stress? Or treat herself to a delicious meal after a long day? Or simply eat for the sake of her mouth!

Rosalee sobbed aloud, devastated that she could not eat or taste those delicious food anymore.

Suddenly, she stopped crying and opened the star network to look for natural food. When she saw the exorbitant prices of natural food in some restaurants, she burst out with foul language.

Five thousand star coins for a plate of sliced cabbage?!

Was she eating a cabbage or gold strips!?

She roared in her heart, but her hands honestly opened the review section of the restaurant that sold the cabbage.

[Customer rating: 4.8/5

Comment: The most delicious cabbage I have ever had. The price is too low; the owner should raise it by 10,000 star coins!]

Rosalee gave a like; this person must be wealthy enough to think that 5,000 star coins was low for a plate of sliced cabbage.

She looked at the other one.

[Customer rating: 4.9/5

Comment: I usually don't give an review after eating but this cabbage had forced me to. It was incredibly delicious; you should try it with raw meat as they unexpectedly go well together.]

Rosalee gave a like, eating raw meat with cabbage was really.... A very unique way of eating.

She believed that only this restaurant was heartless, but it appears that this is not the case.

Her heart sank when she saw the outrageous prices for simple dishes as she kept scrolling through the menus of numerous restaurants.

If 5,000 star coins for a plate of sliced cabbage surprised her, the prices of the following dishes frightened her.

10,000 star coins for a bowl of smashed potato, 13000 for baked corn, 15000 for sweet potato, 18000 for a fresh fruit juice and the list goes on.

Rosalee even spotted a vegetable salad priced at 50,000 star coins near the bottom of the menu.

Realizing that she could not even afford the restaurant's cheapest dish made Rosalee doubt her entire existence.
