The darkness pulsated, breathing like a slumbering beast. All of the experience he had accumulated up until that point, dawdling on the lower floors of the tower—it all felt pointless in the face of where he found himself.
Pale faces pushed through the curtain of shadows; a few at first, then dozens, from every direction. They resembled humans, though their disfigured shapes hardly made them seem as such.
The pale, hairless beings were slender, great in height like the tallest stalks of corn with lipless mouths and beady eyes.
