Chapter 12 - Chosen Sides

The second day of court dawned with a somber air that filled the grand hall.

Despite the opulence of the surroundings, stone walls hung with banners, marble floors gleaming under the morning light filtering through stained glass, the atmosphere was tense.

Lords and ladies arrived with thoughtful expressions, their conversation subdued.

The previous night's festivities had faded quickly, replaced with concerns about Eldoria's lands and the growing unrest among the people.

High Queen Adrian sat on her throne, her ice-blue eyes scanning the gathered nobles with a piercing gaze.

Her attire was as dignified as the previous evening's, though slightly more restrained.

Her golden blonde hair was gathered in a simple braid, and she wore a deep blue gown with silver threading that sparkled in the light.

She sat with her back straight, exuding an undeniable air of command, ready to address the court.

When all were present, she raised her hand to call for silence.

The murmur of voices faded, and the assembled nobility focused on her.

"Lords and ladies," she began, her voice firm yet measured, "we face challenges that require not only our loyalty to Eldoria but also our wisdom and foresight. Recent years have brought hardship to many regions under our care—failing harvests, difficult winters, and growing murmurs of discontent among the people. It is clear that action must be taken and it will take all of us to bring relief to our people."

She paused, her gaze sweeping over the faces in front of her.

But as her words settled over the court, the silence broke with a sudden tension.

"Unity, my queen?" Lord Faelan of House Redhorn, a thin man with a face creased by years of suspicion, stepped forward.

"It is easy to speak of unity when one does not feel the weight of crop failures, of merchant losses, of land wasted by plague. Yet, we are asked to give more when we already suffer."

Queen Adrian's gaze held steady, her expression calm.

"Eldoria is one body, Lord Faelan. If one part suffers, all feel the pain. It is our shared duty."

Several nobles shifted, some nodding while others exchanged wary glances.

Lord Faelan's boldness seemed to ignite a new wave of discomfort, and soon murmurs erupted again.

Lord Alaric of House Briarcrest, a younger noble known for his eloquence but often contrarian nature, stepped forward as well.

"House Briarcrest has always been loyal, my queen, but we cannot ignore that there are limits to our resources. Our coffers are depleted. Our people question why they must suffer while others seem unaffected by these burdens. What assurances can you offer to those who give more and yet may receive less?"

This drew a few murmurs of agreement, and the tension escalated, hanging thick in the air like a storm ready to break.

Lord Larth Rohan looks over to Lord Vernon Carrington and they both exchange devious smiles.

Larth stands proudly from his seat.

"Even though what you say is true my queen, but some of us find it hard to believe we must give more. I don't think it will be possible to give anything."

Larth smiles evilly as he sits back down.

From his place, Cedric listened intently, his jaw set as he observed the subtle shift of allegiances in the room.

He recognized that the open discontent of the lords was more than mere griping; it was a call to arms, a veiled challenge to the queen's authority.

Adrian stood, her ice-blue eyes blazing as she looked upon her court with a steely resolve.

"Those who question my motives may come to me directly, but let us be clear: I have always acted in the best interest of Eldoria. If there are those who cannot see the value of unity, of sacrifice in the name of our people, then perhaps they do not belong in this council."

A faint gasp rose from the gathered nobles, though some heads bowed in respect, including those of House Greythorne and House Ravenshade.

Cedric stepped forward, his voice strong and unwavering.

"House Greythorne stands with you, Your Majesty. We understand the strain of these times, but we cannot abandon our people or this kingdom. Eldoria's strength has always come from houses bound together—not divided."

Victoria Ravenshade joined him, her dark eyes flicking toward the dissenting nobles before resting on the queen.

"House Ravenshade is of the same mind. Those who cannot see past their own struggles to support the greater good do a disservice to this land."

The support from Greythorne and Ravenshade seemed to re-anchor some in the room, though others remained openly skeptical.

Lord Faelan's lips twisted into a grimace, and Lord Alaric crossed his arms, eyes narrow as they looked between Queen Adrian and the nobles who had spoken up.

"Well, loyalty alone does not feed mouths," he muttered, though his voice carried enough to be heard by those closest to him.

"Enough!"

Queen Adrian's voice cut through the tension like a blade.

"Those who will not lend their strength to Eldoria need not darken this hall. We move forward, together, or we do not move at all."

With that, the queen's declaration hung in the air, echoing through the chamber.

She raised her hand, dismissing court with a cold grace that left little room for further objections.

The nobles filtered out, some fuming, others with eyes averted, and a select few, including Cedric, exchanging looks of quiet determination.

Cedric exchanged a brief nod with Victoria, who offered a small smile of approval.

As Cedric turned to leave, he heard a voice call his name.

"Lord Cedric," the queen said, her voice softer than before.

She beckoned him forward, her expression unreadable.

"If you would grant me a few moments of your time."

Cedric inclined his head, stepping closer to the queen, who waited until the last of the nobility had left the hall before speaking.

"You've served Eldoria with loyalty and wisdom, Cedric," she began, her tone carrying a hint of warmth.

"In these times, that is not a quality found in abundance."

"It is my honor, Your Majesty," Cedric replied, meeting her gaze steadily.

"House Greythorne has always remained faithful to the crown, as you know."

A flicker of a smile touched the queen's lips, though her eyes remained serious.

"Yes, and it has not gone unnoticed. I called you here to ask for your thoughts on the current state of our alliances. Some lords have shown hesitation and outright deniance, as you witnessed."

Cedric considered her words, his expression thoughtful.

"There is a growing caution among certain nobles, Your Majesty," he replied carefully. "A reluctance born, I think, of self-preservation rather than disloyalty. Yet it concerns me. Eldoria requires unity now more than ever."

The queen nodded, her gaze contemplative.

"You've always been perceptive, Cedric. I fear that our current troubles may worsen if we do not act swiftly. That is why I wanted your insight. If there is anyone who understands the value of loyalty, it is you."

Cedric gave a solemn nod.

"Your Majesty, whatever may come, House Greythorne will stand by you. If there are those who falter, we shall be ready to fill the gap."

A hint of gratitude softened the queen's expression, though her tone remained steady.

"Thank you, Cedric. It is men like you who will ensure Eldoria's survival. You have my trust, and that is not given lightly."

Cedric bowed deeply, feeling the weight of her words.

As he straightened, the queen placed a hand on his shoulder briefly, a rare gesture of trust.

"Return to your lands, and prepare. There will come a time when Eldoria will need every loyal house, and I know I can rely on you."

Cedric smiles deeply at her words for him.

"Also."

"Yes my queen."

"Very shortly, I'll have a educational institute or academy of sorts built. Here a lot of the noble's children can be taught higher education, the way of the sword, and magic."

"Magic!"

Cedric gasped and looked around to make sure nobody heard him and he leaned back in within a whisper's distance.

"You're telling me that the lost artifacts were discovered?"

"Yes, and with that most of the lost records of magic and how to use it. The only ones that know of this is just the royal advisors and my children. No one else so keep this quiet. I need the explorers that I've hired to keep doing their job quietly until they're finished."

Cedric's eyes widen, but he nods in understanding.

"Yes of course your majesty. I'll tell know one."

"I'll send more details at a later date, and then when it's time, I'll announce it public and send out invitations. I'll be sure that your son gets one as well."

Cedric bows his head respectfully.

With that, she released him, allowing him to rejoin the others leaving the hall.

As Cedric stepped out into the cool air, he felt a renewed sense of purpose.

The storm was gathering, and the loyalty of House Greythorne would soon be tested.

But in his heart, he was resolved; he would stand by Queen Adrian and do everything within his power to see Eldoria through the turbulent times ahead.
