Phone rings
"Hello? Who's this? Oh, Raitha! Yeah, what's up? What?! Yes, I'm free, but I don't think the trains are active—the snow's falling heavily. Okay, okay, I'll see."
One morning, as the sun began to rise and the world lit up, Shyam woke up from a long-lasting sleep and a heavenly dream. Just before setting foot on the floor, he got a call from Raitha, a close friend—closer than we might expect.
They made a plan to meet at Bhara Train Station, located between two cities. That was their usual meeting place to exchange stories and share laughter. But today, the weather didn't seem to favor them. Heavy snow was falling, and the conditions worsened with every passing moment.
Still, Shyam decided to take a chance, hoping the weather would clear by noon and the trains would start running. He got ready and left for the station as quickly as he could.
Taking a taxi, he stared out the window.
The beautiful white snow, the chilly air, and the momentary silence during the slow ride to the station filled his heart. Despite the obstacles, it felt like a worthwhile experience.
When he arrived, he waited. Noon came, and finally, an announcement broke the silence.
"The next train to Bhara Station will arrive in 15 minutes. Passengers, please proceed to Platform Four and stand behind the yellow line. Thank you."
The station was eerily empty, as though the world had ended, leaving Shyam as the only survivor. Soon, the train arrived. He stepped inside and found it as deserted as the station.
"The train to Bhara Station will depart in two minutes. Thank you for choosing this station. Happy journey to Bhara."
With that, the train began its journey. The sound of the snowstorm outside and the rhythmic hum of the train lulled Shyam to sleep. Suddenly, he was jolted awake as the train came to a halt.
"We apologize for the delay. Due to snowy weather, we will make a quick stop. Please remain seated. Thank you for your patience."
Snow had blocked the tracks, but fortunately, the train resumed its journey after about ten minutes.
Half an hour later, it made another stop at Rasagi Station. This time, the delay lasted over an hour. The sun set, the clouds thickened, and the warmth of daylight faded into a cold, moonlit night.
"It's been over five hours," Shyam murmured to himself. "I wonder if she's still waiting. Well, I'm almost there, so there's no point in worrying now."
The train sped up again, its wheels creating a rhythm that echoed through the snowy night. At last, it reached Bhara Station. Shyam stepped off the train—the only passenger to do so—and made his way to their meeting spot.
The snow continued to fall. The quiet night, cold air, and picturesque scenery felt like a scene from an anime. Though he expected her absence, Shyam sat down and decided to wait, clinging to a sliver of hope.
Five minutes passed, and suddenly, a girl in a white coat, red scarf, and gloves appeared, breathing heavily as though she'd run a mile.
Her face lit up, her heart raced, and her eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Hey!" she said between breaths. "Looks like I made it in time. The trains were slow as turtles, weren't they? Haha!"
Shyam, concerned, gestured for her to sit. "Catch your breath first."
It was Raitha. Once she composed herself, she looked up at Shyam, took his hands, and said, "Sorry you had to wait so long. The trains weren't running, so I had to take the bus. Anyway, how are you?"
Their conversation began with a simple "hi" and "hello" but soon transitioned into exchanging stories. Hours passed. Then, an announcement broke the flow.
"The station will close at 1 AM. All passengers are requested to leave before then. Thank you."
With the station closing, Shyam and Raitha left for a nearby motel. The road was empty, and the snow fell softly. As they walked, Raitha tightened her grip on Shyam's hand. He thought she was cold.
But then, she pulled him close, kissed him, and froze in place, leaving Shyam stunned. Before he could process what had happened, Raitha stepped back, her cheeks flushed, and spoke.
"Shyam, there's something I've wanted to tell you for a long time but couldn't. But now, after making my move, I can't back down. The truth is…I LOVE YOU. From the first snowfall to the moment I met you, I've felt something I didn't understand until now. It's love. Will you be my life partner?"
Overwhelmed, Shyam closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and replied, "I've loved you too—from the very beginning. But I was too afraid to tell you, fearing I'd lose you if I did. I thought it was safer to stay friends forever. I never realized you felt the same way. So, my answer is…YES."
THE END..
