Chapter 43: Let Me Please You
Callian sat in the car, skimming the newspaper. His jaw clenched as he read the headline: Assault on Eira Hax Reed.
He scanned through the article. "I will fucking murder every single one of them!"
Bung. Bung.
A soft tap on his window made him jump. Eira was smiling at him through the glass.
"Hey!" she greeted as he quickly shoved the paper aside, fumbling for a second before stepping out of the car.
"Eira," he said, wrapping his arms around her tightly.
He buried his face in her shoulder, his voice muffled. "What are you doing here?"
"I was just coming to greet you. Why do you look so... startled?"
He let out a short laugh. "Startled? No, just surprised." He glanced away, clearing his throat. "How are you feeling?"
She smiled, a little tired but bright. "Better, I think. Ready to go inside?"
Without a word, he scooped her up in his arms, carrying her toward the elevator.
