The doctor's voice carried softly through the room, but the way of his words struck with unbearable force.
"The baby's life depends on Eira's condition. Right now, all we can do is wait. She's fighting, but it's not a balance."
The room fell silent, as if the air had been sucked out entirely.
Callian felt his chest tighten, suffocating his whole body.
Elias was beside him, tense.
"Fighting," Callian murmured, his voice sounded empty, as if the word itself could summon strength for her.
"She's always fighting."
"She has to," Elias replied quietly, though his tone was strained. "For herself. For the baby."
The doctor lingered only a moment longer before retreating, leaving them suspended in a haze of grief and uncertainty.
Callian's knees buckled, and he sank into a chair, his head in his hands.
The image of Eira's pale face, her lifeless body on the stretcher, haunted him.
