The air was alive with chirping insects, distant growls, and the occasional rustling of leaves that spoke of unseen predators.
The fire Selene had lit crackled softly, casting a small circle of light in the smothering darkness.
Micheal sat against a tree, the Veralune Staff laid across his lap. His body still ached from the fight with the shadow beasts, but the rootwort paste Selene had applied to his wounds was already working its magic.
The pain had dulled, though the memories of the beasts' glowing red eyes still haunted him.
Selene leaned back on her elbows, staring up at the canopy of leaves overhead. "You did good out there, kid," she said, breaking the silence.
Micheal glanced at her, surprised by the rare compliment. "Thanks… I guess."
Kai, who sat sharpening his sword on a nearby rock, snorted. "Don't let it go to your head. That was a small test. The jungle has far worse things waiting for us."
Micheal scowled but said nothing. He was too tired to argue with Kai, and deep down, he knew the man was right.
As the firelight danced, Selene spoke again, this time more serious. "You know, this jungle wasn't always like this. Before the Shadow Lords took over, it was a place of balance:dangerous, sure, but not… corrupted."
Micheal asked curiously "What do you mean? What happened?"
Selene absently traced the edge of her dagger. "The Shadow Lords are parasites. They don't just conquer; they consume. This jungle, with all its magic, was a perfect feeding ground for them."
She continued further saying "They spread their darkness, twisting everything to suit their needs. The beasts, the plants, even the air itself-it's all tainted now."
Kai spoke without looking up. "And they won't stop with the jungle. If they get what they want, their corruption will spread to the entire world."
Micheal's grip tightened on the Veralune Staff. "That's why I have to stop them," he said, more to himself than to the others.
Selene gave him a long, appraising look. "You really believe you can? With just that staff?"
"I don't have a choice," Micheal replied, his voice firm. "If I don't try, who will?"
Kai finally lifted his gaze, his dark eyes piercing. "It's not about trying. It's surviving long enough to make the difference. The Shadow Lords don't play on fair grounds, and neither do they leave room for mistakes."
Selene smirked. "Cheerful as always, Kai."
As the group settled into their night, Micheal found it hard to sleep. He kept wondering about what the shadow Lords has install for them. They seemed to be calling his name, beckoning deeper into the jungle.
Unable to resist, Micheal silently got to his feet in an attempt not to wake the others. Following the voices, the Veralune Staff glowed faintly in his hands.
The jungle seemed to open before him and took him to a small, secret grove. In the middle of the grove was an old stone altar, covered in moss, the runes upon it glowing softly. Micheal approached with care; his heart raced at a great speed.
"You shouldn't be here."
The voice made Micheal whirl around, staff at the ready. To his surprise, a figure stepped out of the shadows;a woman cloaked in green and gold, her features otherworldly. Her eyes glowed softly, and her presence seemed to radiate calm.
"Who are you?" Micheal asked, his voice trembling.
"I am Elyria, Keeper of the Grove," she said, her tone soft yet commanding. "This place is sanctified, untouched by the corruption of the Shadow Lords. Why have you come?"
Micheal stammered, "I. I didn't mean to. I just followed the voices.
Elyria's gaze cut at him closely, her eyes running over to the Veralune Staff. "That staff carries within it the heart of the jungle. It is a blessing and a curse. You use it well, or it uses you into ruin."
"I'm trying," Micheal finally replied, frustrated, "but half of the time, I have no idea what I am doing.
Elyria moved closer, laying a hand on his shoulder. "You are young, but you are not alone. The jungle will guide you, as it guided you here."
But be warned,"The path ahead is fraught with trials. You must trust your allies and trust yourself."
Elyria waved her hand, and the runes on the altar began to glow brighter. From the center of the stone, a small orb of light emerged, floating toward Micheal.
"This is a fragment of the jungle's light," Elyria explained. "It will strengthen the staff and protect you in moments of great peril. Use it wisely.
Micheal reached out, and the orb merged with the Veralune Staff. The runes on the staff flared to life, their glow brighter than ever before.
"Thank you," Micheal said, his voice filled with awe.
Elyria nodded. "Go now. Your companions will wake soon, and they must not know of this place. It is a sanctuary, and its secrets must remain hidden."
Micheal nodded, turning to leave. He felt as though he was beginning to walk with a new found sense of purpose back to camp.
By the time Micheal returned, the first rays of sunlight were piercing through the jungle canopy. Already awake, Selene was lazily stretching by the fire, her movements sinuous and graceful, while Kai examined his sword with his usual scowl.
"Where'd you wander off to?" Selene asked, an eyebrow rising.
"Just… needed some air," Micheal said quickly, looking anywhere but at her.
Kai grunted. "Hope you enjoyed it. We've got a long day ahead."
As the group prepared to move on, Micheal couldn't help but feel a spark of hope. The journey ahead would be dangerous, but for the first time, he felt relieved that he has the the power to face it.
And though he didn't say it aloud, he silently thanked Elyria and the jungle for the light she had given him.
