Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Brotherhood Without Banners

Compared to other people in this land, Beric is undoubtedly lucky, he has almost everything.

He has noble status, a strong young body and vast tracts of land. The black and red armor on his body is shiny and bright, and the metal makes a clattering sound as his warhorse walks. His expressionless eyes and facial expressions silently reveal something called arrogance.

He led more than a hundred riders and more than a dozen banners, marching on the King's Road with great fanfare.

They still don't know what they are going to face. In the eyes of Beric and others, although the Mountain is notorious, they are on the side of justice and have the entire country behind them. Most people only regard this action as an "execution."

All they had to do, it seemed, was take out the order signed by Ned and read it out, then take the Mountain to the guillotine and bring his head back to King's Landing.

The reason why they had to bring nearly a hundred people was mainly because they represented the king and were going to kill a tyrant in the name of the king, and at the same time to guard against the Mountain from doing something desperate.

Before Jon came here, he always thought that Beric and his men were ambushed at Mummer's Ford and the news might have leaked out by someone. But now it seems that they themselves did not regard this as a military operation, and did not expect that the Mountain would ambush them, so there was that almost bloodbathed battle.

Jon, who was chasing Beric and his group after Pirp took a detour from an unknown rocky hill, finally saw them from afar.

When Jon saw the direwolf and the stag flag in the lead, he determined that this was the team led by Beric and his men, so he rode forward.

Soon they noticed Jon. Edric, as Beric's squire, left the team and came to contact Jon after receiving Beric's order. After learning Jon's identity, he took him over.

Jon is just a bastard, and Beric is an earl, so Jon needs to dismount and salute him.

"Your Excellency, I am Jon Snow, the bastard son of Lord Stark."

Sitting on horseback, Beric looked down at Jon, the breeze gently blowing his reddish-brown hair. As a young earl, his pride was blown even higher by the breeze.

If Jon was the legitimate son of the Stark family, then he would be worthy of Beric's intervention, but he was just a bastard, so Beric did not need to pay attention to etiquette.

Even it was a bit rude for Jon, a bastard, to appear so openly in front of him, a legitimate noble. You have to know that when Robert brought Cersei and the three children to ask Ned to be his prime minister, Jon, as a bastard, was not allowed to appear in front of Joffrey, the prince.

And the only reason he allowed Jon to speak in front of him now was because of Ned.

"What do you want to see me about?"

Jon didn't care about Beric's bland tone at all and said directly

"I will take them back to King's Landing to protect Lord Stark."

Jon's words left the others confused. They really didn't understand what danger Ned could encounter in the Red Castle. Could it be that the remnants of the Targaryen were going to attack from the Free Cities?

Compared to the doubts of others, the faces of the twenty or so Northern soldiers were still somewhat unhappy. Jon's words were ridiculous. As a bastard, it was undoubtedly rude for him to say such ridiculous words in front of the nobles. Jon's "disrespectful" behavior was undoubtedly a disgrace to their beloved Ned.

In other words, Jon is discrediting the North, and the Northern soldiers, who already had no good feelings towards him as a bastard, will now be even less happy about it.

Beric glanced at Jon and ignored him, continuing to ride forward. A knight not far from him said to Jon, "Go back, young man. Lord Beric is a tolerant man."

Soon, one person after another passed by him, and from time to time someone looked at him with disdain. Jon was not used to dealing with nobles for a while. After he reacted, he directly pulled Pirp to block in front of Beric.

Seeing that Jon was not giving in, a hint of displeasure flashed in Beric's eyes.

"Lord Beric, this is a fellow from the Stormlands. He told me that Tywin is actively recruiting free riders and wandering warriors."

Beric was not a stupid man. He immediately realized what this meant. Soros on the side was also thoughtful, and others gathered around.

Jon secretly sighed in his heart that talking to smart people saves effort, but in order not to waste time, Jon still expressed his thoughts before they came up with a solution.

"Lord Beric, the Mountain's rampage in the Riverlands is definitely not a simple robbery. Without the support of its master, how dare a mad dog bite so easily?"

Then Jon said to the group of northern soldiers behind him:

"It seems that you think Lord Ned is quite safe in King's Landing. If it is so safe, can anyone tell me how Lord Ned was injured and how the king died?!"

Although not many people knew the truth about Robert's death, everyone was smart and could more or less sense that something was wrong.

After all, rumors are the most irresistible thing in this world.

After Jon finished speaking, he quickly said to Beric and the others:

"Lord Beric, although I am a bastard, my life was given to me by Lord Stark. I am always ready to protect him with my own life."

Seeing that the others seemed to have softened their attitude towards him a little, Jon continued, "But my power is too weak. I need help!"

In some minor noble families and even in most aristocratic families, illegitimate children would eventually become beasts of burden and become the same as common people. They would live in a state of confusion all their lives.

But now Jon's vision and love for Ned not only made Beric look at him with a higher eye, but also indirectly improved his image in the hearts of the northern soldiers.

Beric thought that if the Mountain's rampage across the river was not simply a robbery, and Tywin was behind him, then there was no way for him and his men to carry out Ned's orders.

But now that they are out, they cannot return empty-handed, otherwise they will look like they were scared back. At least they should confirm whether Tywin is really recruiting troops.

"I will consider your words. As for taking them away, you'd better not think about it."

Jon was also unhappy about being spoken to in this manner all the time.

"What's the point of looking for you if I can't find anyone!?"

Jon was angry in his heart, but he didn't have much time to tangle with Beric. He stood up and shouted directly to a group of northern soldiers.

"Everyone, I, Jon Snow, am only a bastard, but I am also a child who wants to save my father. Jaime Lannister cut Lord Stark's leg because of his brother. Fortunately, the king was still alive at that time and he did not dare to harm Lord Stark's life. But now the king is dead, and King's Landing is full of yellow-haired Lannisters. If Lord Stark is attacked again, who can protect him?!"

Although Jon's words were full of loopholes, their logic was already very rigorous for the Northern soldiers who had all received prenatal education. In Jon's description, Ned, who was dragging his injured leg, was like a group of lonely old wolves, facing the predatory beasts alone.

However, Jon's blatant act of seizing "military power" angered Beric and other nobles.

"presumptuous!"

"Nonsense!"

"What do you want to do!"
