Without hesitation, he flapped his wings and stirred up a Blizzard across the field.
A blue light flashed in both eyes, and Mind Reader locked onto Gardevoir.
When Articuno opened its mouth, an icy blue beam shot forth.
"Sheer Cold!"
"Gardevoir, Substitute!"
"Gallade, Night Slash!"
At that moment, Evan's voice resonated in the minds of his two Pokémon.
Simultaneously, Gardevoir understood his intent. Just as Sheer Cold was about to hit, a shadow flickered across its body. Instantly, an identical Mega Gardevoir appeared on the field.
Sheer Cold struck immediately after the Substitute was used, destroying the duplicate. While the move was accurate, Gardevoir evaded with its strategy.
Taking advantage of Articuno's delay after using Sheer Cold, Gallade surged forward and struck a powerful blow. Dark purple energy radiated from Gallade's hands as it hit Articuno directly.
"Boom!"
A pained cry escaped Articuno as it reeled from the attack.
Gardevoir, unscathed and needing no further direction, seized the moment. Using Confusion, it immobilized Articuno and hurled it into the sea.
Watching this, Evan nodded with satisfaction.
"Not bad. The synergy between these two is nearly perfect. It's no wonder they've reached the peak of the Elite level in the wild. Their combat experience is unparalleled."
Pikachu and the other Pokémon standing near Evan stared wide-eyed at the scene.
Gardevoir, soaring majestically in the sky, was awe-inspiring.
On the other side, Violet was also commanding her Pokémon to attack Zapdos. To be honest, she doubted her ability to handle either of the legendary birds alone, let alone both together. But she thought, Could I take them down as a team? Maybe not, but it's worth a try.
Articuno and Zapdos, however, were increasingly uneasy. Reinforcements were arriving—a Dragonite could be seen approaching in the distance. The two legendary birds exchanged glances.
Time to retreat!
Continuing the fight risked them being captured. Legendary or not, they were wary of humans and their cunning strategies.
In unison, Articuno and Zapdos initiated a retreat. Articuno released another Blizzard, while Zapdos summoned a storm of lightning, illuminating the ominous sky.
Evan furrowed his brows. "What's with all the noise?"
"They're escaping," Gardevoir's voice echoed in his mind.
Before Evan could respond, Articuno and Zapdos launched a coordinated attack to cover their retreat. Gallade and Gardevoir intercepted the assault without hesitation. Taking advantage of the momentary chaos, the two legendary birds activated Agility and sped off toward the open sea, their speed rivaling that of a fighter jet.
By the time the aftermath of their attack cleared, the two Pokémon had vanished from sight. Evan clenched his fists in frustration.
"Ugh!"
He wanted to yell but restrained herself. It was infuriating to see such a perfect opportunity slip away.
"If I could have captured Articuno… it's such a beautiful Pokémon," he muttered wistfully. Certainly better looking than those odd forms in Galar.
Turning to Violet, Evan groaned, "Why didn't you have Metagross block them earlier?"
Violet rolled her eyes. "Do you think I could stop both of them combined? If I could, why would I need your help?"
She let out an exasperated sigh. Even if she managed to defeat a legendary, taming one was another matter. These creatures were prideful, and unless they willingly submitted, any attempt to confine them would be met with fierce resistance. The effort, while tempting, seemed futile.
Evan teased with a smirk, "How shameful for an aspiring Elite Trainer. Maybe you're just a second-rate one?"
Veins bulged on Violet's forehead. "Mind your own business!" she snapped, clearly annoyed.
As a Dragonite descended nearby, Evan turned to Violet with a resigned shrug.
"I'm heading back."
"It's up to you to handle the rest."
After saying this, Evan waved at Gardevoir and Gallade. The two Pokémon returned to his side immediately. Once the mental connection was severed, they reverted to their original states.
The newcomer, watching this scene, felt his pupils contract sharply.
"Two Pokémon Mega Evolving together? Who is this guy?"
As the man pondered this, Evan recalled all his Pokémon and climbed onto Pidgeot's back. With a powerful beat of its wings, Pidgeot carried him away.
Only after Evan's departure did the man snap out of his daze. He promptly summoned his Dragonite to the beach.
"Miss Madison, Miss Violet," he called out, "is everything resolved? And what on earth was that?"
Violet gave a lazy yawn, stretched, and began recalling her Pokémon as well. "That? Just the helper I called over," she explained nonchalantly. "An unlicensed master breeder. Got any problems, Little Eli?"
Hearing the nickname, the man's face turned dark. "I am Eli, not 'little Eli'! And a master breeder? Are you serious?"
"Of course," Violet interjected with a shrug. "Everything I said is true. If you doubt me, feel free to visit his breeding house. He's got custom-made energy cubes galore. The ones I'm using now? Made by him."
Without waiting for a reply, Violet added, "Anyway, I'm heading back to rest. I'm done here."
She turned and left, muttering under her breath. So annoying. This was supposed to be a vacation. In the future, when I become an Elite, I'm refusing to work overtime.
Eli, left standing alone, felt a wave of frustration. What a waste of time. Resigned, he pulled out his communicator to report to his superiors. "Everything's settled here," he said curtly. "I'll send the full details later. As for the report? I'll leave it to the eyewitnesses." He glanced around. There's always someone watching.
With his task done, Eli rejoined Madison, curious about what had transpired. Madison filled him in, detailing how Evan had saved the day. Listening intently, Eli's confusion turned to awe.
"Mega Evolving two Pokémon at once?" He clicked his tongue. "Terrifying. Thankfully, I became an Elite early. Otherwise, holding onto that position would've been a nightmare."
He sighed, his thoughts drifting to the competitive landscape. "These new Trainers are monstrous. Violet's already on her way to becoming a Champion. And then there's that competition winner from a few years back, gunning for an Elite spot this year. It's insane."
Despite his complaints, Eli smirked. "Lucky for me, I snagged my Elite position before all this madness."
Shaking off his unease, he turned to Madison. "Draft a report and submit it. Also, when Violet wakes up, ask her for Evan's breeding house address. I'd like to meet this 'master breeder' myself. And maybe order some Power Cubes for my team."
Madison stifled a laugh, her lips twitching at the corners. Elites these days… so lazy.
Her thoughts shifted to the next wave of Trainers climbing the ranks. The future of the Alliance looks questionable at best.
