Chapter 2 - Lost in the labyrinth

"lunch break"

Jarek sighed.

'Finally.'

He got up and walked towards the cafeteria. It was time for some got old lunch paste. He wasnt very eager to see the unappetizing meal they got every day but he still knew he had to eat.

And today, Jarek worked more than usual. The machines behaved very strange today. There was a lot to fix, mire than usual.

Lost in thoughts, Jarek wandered thru the corridors of the factory on his way to the cafeteria but took a left to the toilets instead. Still lost in thoughts he kept going until he started wondering what took so long, since the toilets should just be a few corneners further from the cafeteria.

Maybe he took a wrong turn?

He already had decided to turn around, when suddenly he stopped. There was a voice! It was the voice of what seemed to be an elderly man. He was hastily talking to someone else, but Jarek couldnt understand a word.

He hesitated for a second, but Jarek was a curious boy.

After he kept going in the direction of the voice, the corridors started changing. They started seeming cleaner, less cables, less pipes, less concrete. They were made of metal, some of bricks.

And there it was. The door with the voice behind it. He pressed his ear against it to understand everything a bit better.

"...so now that its gone, how do you expect it to return? You know they want it until in three days and they dont accept excuses. Donyou know what happens, when they dont get the artifact?"

A voice of a boy, probably around Jareks age answered:

"Y...yes, Sir. They will send me to the trench."

Then the older man again:

"AND THEY WILL SEND ME THERE TOO SO GET YOUR ASS OUT OF MY OFFICE AND FIND IT."

Jarek heard footsteps and quickly snuck towards the next corner. Unfortunatly, he went into the wrong directions. And to make things even worse, the footsteps of the boy took the same direction. The boy was coming towards him.

'This seems to be a serious matter. If they find me here...'

He quickly turned around and started sneaking away.

Further into the depth of the factory. He moved fast, yet still the steps seemed to be closer to him at every corner:

Left, right, right, left, right again. Then down an escalator.

Was he still in the factory? He wasnt sure. He looked back at the escalator and quickly decided to hide underneath it. A lonely fibreglass lamp failed to make the escalator fit into this place.

I quickly slipped behind it and crawled under the escalator.

Only a few moments after dissapearing under the escalator, I heard the pair of shoes belonging to the office boy step from the escalator and quickly walk away from it.

After not hearing them anymore, Jarek crawled out of his hiding space. He looked at his watch. If he hurried he could explore this part of the factory a bit and still get something to eat from the cafeteria. The young worked started sneaking in the direction in which the steps of the office boy dissapeared. After thinking for a second he started walking normally, so he wouldnt look so much like he didnt belong here. Than he realised he was still wearing factory clothes and ut was quite obvious he didnt belong here, so he started sneaking again.

Door after door he moved and finally found something interesting: an open door to what looked like a server room. He squeezed himself thru the door and checked for cameras but strangely couldnt find any.

As he started looking around he saw something strange: behind the rows of racks if servers strangely blinking and beeping, there was something else. Like ribbed columns, but they were not connected to the roof or the floor. The seemed to be hanging from clawlike constructs in the roof. Cablelike black metalstrips were hanging down everywhere from the columnlike structures. He was still thinking about what they might be, when suddenly, one of them started moving, then another one, and another one. Three of the columns started vibrating, the noise was almost deafening and the cablelike metal stripes started moving:

'Are those...legs?'
