Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Okay, Switch Satchwith felt terrible; well, kind of. His newer best friend, Stevenson Mackenzie, got bit by some sort of mythical creature. The truth was Switch wasn't 100% sure what it was, but his guess was a werewolf, based on the way Steven was talking.

He may have overheard one of his dad's, Sheriff Satchwith, calls about only half of a body being found in the forest outside of the small town of Davis, California. He may also surprise Steven at his fraternity house the day before university starts again and get him to look for another half of the body. And maybe he had left Steven in the woods after Switch got caught by his dad. So Switch wasn't a perfect best friend. He's a demon, after all. What do you expect?

"A wolf bit you." rhetorically asked Switch as he rolled his eyes.

Switch was an average-looking man for a 21-year-old, with average height, average build, and even average looks, which Switch would disagree with if you asked him. The only thing extraordinary about his looks was his golden eyes, which were a big contrast against his short, dark hair. Switch appeared to be an average university student on the outside in one of his rock band t-shirts, blue jeans, and red hoodie, and he wore a black blazer over it. But he and his little coven knew he wasn't.

"Yes!" Steven responded, not even noticing Switch was being rhetorical.

Steven, on the other hand, was a total dork with unruly blond hair if you asked Switch, but a loveable dork. Steven was only 19, which is probably why he tried to be cool, which enhanced his dorky qualities. How Steven tried to dress cool in his leather coat over his superhero t-shirt and his too-tight skinny jeans as if he should be riding a motorcycle, which was technically just a 5-speed bike. And how Steven was once again going to try out for the UCD football team even though he needed an inhaler if he walked too fast.

"Sure?" With enough sarcasm, Switch said that Steven should finally realize his best friend didn't believe him.

"All right, well, if you don't believe me about the wolf, then you will definitely not going to believe me about the body," Steven responded.

"Are you kidding me? You found it?" said a jealous Switch.

"No, I wish I was. I am going to have nightmares for months." Steven said, making Switch scoff.

"Oh god, that is freakin' awesome. I mean, this is seriously going to be the best thing that happened to Davis since," that's when Switch spotted his other best friend, " Since the birth of the fairy princess herself, Maggie O'Siog."

Maggie walked over to Switch and gave him a peck on the cheek, even though he knew she hated the fairy comment. "I hope it's okay that I borrow Switch before classes start," said Maggie as she dragged Switch away from Steven.

"So what's up gorgeous?" asked Switch as they walked the halls of UCD.

"One, stop calling me a fairy," said the pissed-off Fae, "second, Danny sent me a million texts last night wondering if the body in the forest was your work."

Maggie was an outrageous goddess, which was no surprise when you found out she was a Fae, a magical creature known for its beauty. Her curves were in all the right places, and she had golden strawberry locks that flowed down her back. She was always wearing high-end, high-priced, preppy outfits. Today, she wore a beautiful baby blue dress with a matching blazer and tan heels, making her almost as tall as Switch.

She and Switch had been friends since kindergarten when a 7-year-old Fae may have accidentally been seen by the real Maggie O'Siog and died as a result. The new Maggie, or a name that, even for someone who could speak Latin since he was two, could not pronounce, took the place of the real Maggie for the real Maggie's parents' sake. Now that Fae was 23, technically, though, the real Maggie would be 21, the same age as Switch.

"Sorry, not my work," said Switch, causing Maggie to raise an eyebrow. "What, it was a werewolf, apparently?"

"Sure, Switch sure." said Maggie, "So who was this guy?" she asked when they got to her first class, advanced chemistry.

"She was a woman," responded Switch, knowing that would shut her up.

"Oh," said a surprised Maggie, "Definitely not your work then."

~*~

It was after Switch's first class, which was advanced Latin, as he headed to get a coffee. However, that's when he spotted Steven drooling over a pretty woman talking to Maggie. He walked up to Steven and one of Steven's classmates, Terry. They were talking about the cute woman Steven was drooling over. "How come the new girl in town was here all of a few classes as she is already talking to Maggie O'Siog," said Terry.

"Because she's hot. Beautiful people heard together. Speaking of…" Switch was thrown up against the wall by Danny LockHaven, his boyfriend since high school. "Hi there, handsome."

Danny was indeed very handsome. He had an angelic quality about him, a deep tan complexion, and dark hair. Danny was very fit; he was one of the offensive linemen on the UCD football team. You could tell based on how his T-shirts hugged his every muscle, and his shirt wasn't the only thing that didn't leave up for the thought of imagination. His tight jeans didn't hide much, either.

"You and I need to talk now," whispered Danny in Switch's ear.

"Sure thing, babe," Switch replied as Danny began to drag him to the nearest restroom.

Switch could hear Terry and Steven as he was dragged away, commenting on how Switch fit into that group. As a pissed-off Switch was being dragged away by his pissed-off fallen angel, he could feel the gold smoke fill his eyes, but only briefly. He could imagine what the rest of the university would think if they discovered what Switch was exactly, except for Danny and Maggie, his little coven.

Once they got into the restroom, which was occupied by a few university guys, Danny yelled at them to get out, which was very unlike the even-tempered young man. The other guys scattered out of the washroom once they saw Switch's boyfriend's angry face.

"You can't just go around and kill people on a whim, Switch." Danny said, "Do you care that it can attract hunters?"

This made Switch roll his eyes. "Oh, come on, you know I am not afraid of any hunters, even ones that specialize in demons. And besides, it wasn't my handy work. You know I go for men. I am like a serial killer; I have preferences."

"I don't care what your preferences are, Switch. It could be one of your clients' girlfriends or wife, and you got jealous…"

This made Switch laugh, "Danny, sweetheart, the only one here who is jealous is you. You, of all people, know that once you have sex with an incubus, you can't go back. I would never get jealous of some stupid whore of a guy I can barely remember the name of. The only person I would get jealous of would be you." Switch said, giving Danny a passionate kiss. Then, he began to head south.

~*~

Dray La-Haye could hear a trespasser on the old La-Haye property. Dray was at his child's home before his family's murder when he was 7. He was supposed to meet a contractor to discuss tearing down the old falling-apart house and making a new one.

He and his uncle had just moved back to Davis. His Uncle Carol had just gotten a job at UCD as a professor of religion and East European history. He got Dray a job at a local mechanic shop.

Dray had just turned 18, but he looked old for his age. He had red hair that he had spiked up. He wore a varsity coat over a plain grey T-shirt, dark jeans, and motorcycle boots. However, he didn't drive a motorcycle; instead, he drove a black Cadillac.

As Dray approached, he could hear two men talking, not just one. He could hear one of the men talking about the other being a werewolf, which was true, but how the other guy knew he was sure. But what confused him most was that the one he assumed was the werewolf friend had no heartbeat, couldn't hear his footsteps, and even had no scent.

When the men got into view, he saw the one with the buzzed-cut hair catch his eyes, which caused him to freeze in his steps. Part of him wanted to run away from him, but another part wanted to rip off the man's clothes.

"What are you doing here?" Dray asked when he finally found his voice, scarring the person looking for something. "This is private property."

"Sorry. We were just looking for something, but… forget it," said the one with unruly hair.

Without a word, Dray tossed the inhaler he found last night to the other werewolf.

"All right, come on, Switch, I gotta get to work." said the werewolf to his friend Switch. This nickname gave Dray a sinking feeling in his stomach that the man Switch was something dangerous.

Before they vanished into the Davis woods, Switch turned around and said, " See you later, bat or is it wolf."

Yep, Dray thought this was not good. How the man knew he was not only a werewolf but a vampire made him nervous. He was going to have to warn his uncle of this… Switch, but he wasn't sure what this Switch was. Hopefully, his uncle knew.

~*~

That night, after Steven joined the football team, Switch received an unexpected visit from a fallen angel.

"Danny," Switch said, not looking up from his book.

"Why didn't you tell me Steven was bitten by a werewolf." said a pissed-off Danny.

"Where is the fun in telling you everything, my fallen angel." said a cheeky Switch, finally looking up from his book, "And besides, I got it under control."

"Well, I don't think you have as much control as you think." said a serious Danny. "Steven is already too close to the HĂ©lie girl."

"You mean the HĂ©lie hunters. Shit!" Switch cursed as he kicked some papers and books scattered over his room.

"Yes, as in Steven, going on a date with a hunter specializing in hunting werewolves, which he is now."

"Yah, yah. I get it, Daniel, but hunters have a code they live by; if he doesn't hurt anything bigger than a rabbit, he is safe," said Switch nonchalantly.

"No, I don't think you are truly getting it Switch. The Hélies broke their little code over ten years ago when they murdered the La-Haye family." stressed Danny, "Steven is going to die if the Hélie have anything to say about it. They might be using Teresa to worm one out. Especially when he has no idea what he is. Get it through your fuking head, don't you care about…"

BAM! Danny was up against the wall, his feet dangling while Switch held his throat. "Don't you dare undermine my feelings for Steven; he is like a brother? And besides, a couple bad HĂ©lie doesn't mean their whole family are assholes. Get it."

Danny could not respond. Switch held his thought so tight he was glad he didn't need to breathe because he couldn't. Switch eventually released him, and Danny's butt hit the floor. "Got it," Danny replied In a raspy voice while he rubbed his aching neck.

"Good." was all Switch said. "Now help me find the information to try and convince Steven, okay."

~*~

When the next day came, Switch asked Steven to come over before Steven went to the party at Maggie's house. Which they were hoping to talk him out of.

"Get in. We've been reading websites, books, and all this information all night."

"How much coffee have you had?" asked Steven.

"A lot." said a disapproving Danny.

"Doesn't matter." Switch glared at Danny, "Okay, just listen."

"Oh, is this about the body?" whispered Steven to Switch so Danny wouldn't be here.

"No. Now listen," said Switch, starting to get annoyed.

"Remember the talk from the other day in the woods?" asked Switch; he got a nod from Steven. "The "wolf"… the bite in the woods. Do you even know why a wolf howls?"

"Should I?" asked a confused Steven.

"It's a signal, okay? To the rest of the pack," said Danny.

"So if you heard a "wolf" howling, that means others could have been nearby. Maybe even a whole pack of them," said Switch, finishing Danny's sentence.

"A whole pack of wolves," Scott said, still not getting it.

"No… Werewolves, you idiot." said an annoyed Switch, gently hitting Steven in the head or as gentle as a demon could hit.

"Hey, why are you two seriously wasting my time with this? You know Teresa is picking me up in two hours. Switch, I expect this amount of crazy from you, but you too, Danny."

"You are not going, Steven," Switch said, trying to put his foot down without losing it before Steven.

"I saw you on the field today, Steve. Okay, what you did wasn't just amazing, all right? It was impossible." said Danny, trying to be the peacemaker.

"Yeah, so I made a good play."

"No, you made an incredible play; I mean… the way you moved, your speed, your reflexes. Y'know, people can't just suddenly do that overnight. And don't even think we didn't notice that you don't need your inhaler anymore." continued Danny.

"Okay! Guys, I can't think about this now. We'll talk tomorrow." said Steven, getting his bag.

"Tomorrow?! What? No! The full moon's tonight. Don't you get it?" yelled Switch, getting fed up with all this.

"What are you two trying to do? I just made the team. I got a date with a girl I can't believe wants to go out with me, and everything in my life is perfect. Why are you trying to ruin this?"

"We're trying to help. You're cursed, Steven," said Danny with genuine concern.

"The moon will cause you to change physically, and it also just so happens to be when your bloodlust is at its peak," said Switch, trying to continue Danny's point.

"Bloodlust?" asked Steven, still not believing what they said.

"Yeah, your urge to kill," said Switch, getting calm. Danny could see Steven was not the only one feeling the urge to kill. Switch was starting to lose his cool. The calmer and calmer he got, the more Danny worried.

"I'm already starting to feel an urge to kill, guys." Replied an angry Steven.

"You gotta cancel this date," said Switch. "I'm gonna call her right now."

"What are you doing?" growled Steven.

"I'm cancelling the date," said Switch, getting Steven's phone out of his bag.

"No, give it to me!" roared Steven. He was about to pin Switch to the wall, but Danny swooped in just in time to be pinned to the wall.

"I'm sorry, Danny. I…" Danny could tell Steven was confused that he was holding Danny up to the wall and not Switch. "I gotta go get ready for that party. I'm sorry," said Steven, brushing off what had just happened.

Switch tossed his phone at him and said calmly, "If you end up killing her, Stevie, don't come crying to me about it."

With that, Steven left.

"You didn't have to do that," said Switch calmly. Danny knew Switch and knew that when Switch was yelling, you were safe, but all bets were off when Switch was calm.

"You're welcome," said Danny to Switch; he got a shrug as a response. "You know you would loathe yourself for a long time if you hurt him, let alone kill him."

"Yeah, I know," said Switch. "Now get changed; we are going to the party."

~*~

They got to the party an hour early. Primarily, Switch wanted to talk to Maggie about Steven.

"I can't believe Steven is still alive," said Maggie; she and Switch were in her room. Maggie tried to figure out what to wear; Danny was downstairs with Kevin, Maggie's boyfriend, just hanging out.

"Yeah, if Danny didn't step in, he might be dead right now." Switch was lying on Maggie's bed when she pulled out a blue dress. "You can't wear that."

"What's wrong with it?" asked Maggie as she examined the dress.

"Ware the black one, much more tasteful."

"By much more tasteful, you mean slutty"

"Bingo," said Switch as he touched his nose with his index finger.

"So, what are you going to do about the HĂ©lies?" asked Maggie with an eyebrow raised; she disappeared behind a screen to get changed.

"For now," replied Switch, "nothing. I want to see if they follow their little code."

"And if they don't?" Maggie reappeared from behind the screen in a very revealing dress.

"Then I am going to have a lot of fun." Switch smiled at her with a mouth full of jagged teeth.

"Yeah, I bet. So what about this Dray character? I have a feeling you have plans for him too."

"A course I do, my little fae; he does look very delicious. Speaking of." Switch joked about the last part.

Maggie looked in the mirror and said, "I am wearing the blue one."

"Oh, you wound me, princess."

~*~

When it came time for the party, Switch, Maggie, and Danny were on the lookout for Steven and Tessa. Danny and Maggie, mainly Switch, were on a high from all the lust that filled the house and yard. He had Danny up against a wall, kissing and nipping at him as if his life depended on it. That's when Steven started to freak out, ditched Tessa and tried to get out of the party as quickly as possible.

Danny was not far on his heels, leaving a pissed-off Switch behind. Danny knew he would pay for it later, but right now, Steven was his concern, and he knew if Switch were in his right mind, it would be his concern, too.

~*~

Danny drove Steven back to his fraternity and got him in a cold shower, which usually helps Switch when his bloodlust is high. It seemed to help. That's when Steven said to Danny, "It's Dray. The one that bit me was Dray."

That was when Switch and Maggie showed up. Steven asked if Teresa was all right. "She was fine; she was talking with Dray when I left," said Maggie. That was when Steven burst past them and went out the window.

"One of you just had to mention Dray," Danny said as he shook his head; Switch and Maggie looked at him confused. "Steven thinks Dray is the wolf that bit him."

"Seriously, Steven thinks that bata mutt-strigoi is an alpha," said Switch, trying to process the information. "We got to go after him before he kills someone or, worse, gets killed."

~*~

Switch and Danny flew off to find Steven while Maggie returned to her party.

When Switch and Danny found Steven. He was with Dray and three HĂ©lie hunters. Steven was hit with a crossbow arrow in the arm. Switch and Danny landed in a tall tree; Switch told Danny to stay put because things were about to get messy.

Switch was not kidding; he took out the first guy by breaking his neck with his bare hands. The second guy was even less lucky because Switch ripped through his rib cage and removed his heart. The third guy is fortunate that Switch lets him live, probably because Switch thinks he is attractive. Danny was not sure if to consider the guy lucky or not. During all this, he caught Dray's eyes and saw the fear in them; Danny's heart went out to him; he knew what it was like to see what lurched in the night for the first time.

Switch joined him on the branch of the tree he was in. "So what now?" Danny asked Switch.

"Simple. We wait for them to make the next move," said Switch.
