Chereads / Leveling up with my demon system / Chapter 54 - The Unexpected Hospitality.

Chapter 54 - The Unexpected Hospitality.

The market on the distant planet was a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and scents. Stalls filled with exotic fruits, alien trinkets, and peculiar artifacts lined the streets, each more intriguing than the last. The air buzzed with the chatter of vendors, customers, and the occasional squawk of a strange, feathered creature that looked suspiciously like a pineapple.

Robert meandered through the bustling market, dressed in a casual outfit that allowed him to blend in with the crowd. He took a bite of a crisp, juicy apple, savoring its sweetness as he observed the lively scene. The diversity of life forms and the unique blend of cultures made the market a delightful place to explore.

Pausing by a stall selling shimmering fabrics, he took another bite of his apple, his gaze distant and contemplative. The weight of his recent battle against Diablo lingered in his mind, like a shadow that refused to dissipate. "Now that I have a taste of what fighting a demon lord feels like..." he murmured to himself, the memory of the clash vivid in his thoughts.

Robert opened his system interface, the holographic display flickering to life in front of him.

[Current Level: 139].

Various stats and abilities scrolled across the screen, a stark reminder of his need for growth.

[Experience needed for next level: 1,000,000 XP].

[Level needed to become Demon Lord: 150].

It was clear that while he was formidable, he still had a long journey ahead.

"I must grow stronger," he stated, his voice calm and resolute. His eyes scanned the information with a sense of quiet determination, seeking ways to enhance his skills. "And they will understand," he continued, his tone unyielding. "Will they?" He paused, holding his head briefly. "They will not."

The market's vibrant energy continued to swirl around him, a stark contrast to his introspective musings. With a deep breath, he closed the system interface and resumed his stroll through the market. The apple's taste lingered on his tongue, a poignant reminder of his journey. The bustling scene around him served as both a distraction and a source of renewed resolve, fueling his commitment to become stronger and face the challenges ahead.

Even in the face of uncertainty and expectation, Robert moved forward with a quiet, steadfast determination, embodying the stoic principles of inner strength and resilience. The goal of becoming a Demon Lord was distant, but not unattainable. With each step, he edged closer to the power he sought, prepared to overcome any obstacle in his path.

As the market began to wind down, the bustling crowds slowly started to thin out. Vendors packed away their goods, and families and shoppers made their way home, leaving the colorful stalls deserted under the evening sky. The vibrant energy of the day shifted to a quieter, more subdued atmosphere as twilight descended.

Robert continued to stroll through the now less crowded market, enjoying the relative peace and the crispness of his apple. The streets were still lit with an array of vibrant lights, casting an almost magical glow over the scene.

As he turned a corner, a pair of police officers approached him. Their uniforms were a stark contrast to the eclectic surroundings, and their expressions were serious. "Excuse me, sir," one of the officers called out, causing Robert to pause mid-step.

"Yes, officer?" Robert replied calmly, a polite smile on his face.

The officer glanced at his partner before continuing. "We've had reports of some disturbances nearby and need to ask you a few questions. What brings you to this part of town?"

Robert's mind raced, but his demeanor remained composed. "Just passing through, enjoying the sights," he said casually, taking another bite of his apple. "Is there a problem?"

The second officer narrowed his eyes slightly. "Where exactly are you headed?"

"Nowhere specific," Robert replied with a nonchalant shrug. "Just exploring. It's my first time here, and I wanted to see what the market had to offer."

"And what have you been doing for the past couple of hours?" the first officer pressed, his tone scrutinizing.

"Mostly wandering, browsing the stalls," Robert said smoothly. "I picked up this apple, as you can see." He held up the half-eaten fruit as evidence, a slight chuckle in his voice.

The officers exchanged glances. "We're going to need to see some identification," the second officer said.

Robert reached into his pocket and pulled out a nondescript ID card, handing it over without hesitation. "Here you go," he said, maintaining his relaxed facade.

The officers examined the ID carefully, but Robert's calm demeanor and vague but plausible answers seemed to ease their suspicion slightly. "Alright, Mr. Johnson," the first officer said, handing the card back. "You can go, but stay out of trouble."

"Of course, officers," Robert replied, pocketing his ID. "Have a good evening." He gave them a friendly nod before continuing on his way, the apple still in hand. His heart rate remained steady, a testament to his practiced ease under pressure.

As the vibrant market faded behind him, Robert ventured into the lush, dense forest that lay on the outskirts of the bustling town. The tall trees formed a canopy overhead, their leaves rustling softly in the evening breeze. The path ahead was faintly lit by the last rays of the setting sun, casting long shadows and lending the forest an eerie, yet oddly peaceful, ambiance.

Robert walked with purpose, the sounds of nocturnal creatures beginning to fill the air. His casual stroll was occasionally interrupted by a low-hanging branch or an unexpected root that seemed determined to trip him up. He muttered to himself about the joys of nature and continued his trek with admirable, if somewhat begrudging, determination.

After what felt like an eternity of dodging wildlife and grumbling about the inconvenience of trees, Robert stumbled upon a small, quaint house nestled amidst the dense foliage. It was the kind of house that looked like it had popped straight out of a fairy tale, complete with a charming little chimney and flower boxes under the windows.

Approaching the front door, Robert noticed a neatly folded piece of parchment pinned to it. Unfolding the note, he read aloud with a skeptical eyebrow raised, "Kindly, you are welcomed to stay just for the night and then you leave."

He looked around, half expecting to see hidden cameras or hear the laughter of mischievous forest spirits. "Well, that's...convenient," he said to himself, the corners of his mouth twitching with amusement. "A free night's stay in the middle of a creepy forest. What could possibly go wrong?"

Shrugging, Robert decided to take the mysterious offer. He pushed open the door, which creaked dramatically as if auditioning for a horror movie, and stepped inside. The interior was cozy and inviting, with a crackling fire in the hearth and a rustic, homey feel.

To his surprise, there was already someone else inside. A young man, about his age, sat at a table with a katana laid out in front of him and a couple of guns casually placed nearby. He looked up as Robert entered, his expression serious and no-nonsense.

"Another visitor," the stranger said curtly. "Name's Alex."

"Robert," he replied, offering a nod as he took in the scene. "Interesting place."

Alex simply nodded, not saying much more. His eyes were sharp and vigilant, scanning Robert with a quiet intensity.

Robert set his things down and helped himself to some snacks left out on a small table. "Well, at least whoever lives here has good taste in food," he chuckled, munching on a cookie.

As the night wore on, they exchanged only a few words, mostly about practical matters. Alex, it seemed, wasn't much of a talker. He focused on maintaining his weapons, his movements precise and methodical.

Morning came all too quickly, and Robert stretched, feeling surprisingly well-rested. As he gathered his belongings, he glanced at the note one last time. "Just for the night, huh? Well, rules are rules," he sighed with mock resignation.

Exiting the house, he carefully closed the door behind him and stepped back onto the forest path. "Thanks for the hospitality, mysterious forest-dwelling benefactor," he called out, waving at the silent trees.

Alex followed suit, his demeanor still as stoic as the night before. "Good luck out there," he said simply.

"You too, Alex," Robert replied, a small smile playing on his lips.

With a light heart and a sense of adventure renewed, Robert resumed his journey, the forest once again swallowing him up as he continued on his way. The peculiar encounter had left him both amused and intrigued, a reminder that even the strangest of invitations could lead to a night of unexpected comfort and laughter.

As Robert continued on his way, he glanced back to see Alex take a different path, opting for a more dynamic mode of travel. With a single, powerful leap, Alex launched himself into the air, landing gracefully on a sturdy tree branch. His movements were fluid and precise, reminiscent of a panther on the prowl.

From there, Alex navigated the forest by leaping from tree to tree with an impressive agility. Each jump was calculated and controlled, his form sleek and streamlined as he soared through the air. His katana remained securely strapped to his back, and the guns were holstered but within easy reach, giving him a formidable presence even in motion.

The forest canopy seemed to part for him, branches bending and flexing under his weight only to spring back into place as he moved on. His jumps were silent and efficient, making him almost invisible against the backdrop of the dense foliage. The few forest creatures that noticed him quickly scampered away, sensing his quiet strength and determination.

As he continued to travel this way, Alex's focus remained unwavering. His eyes scanned the surroundings constantly, alert for any signs of danger or opportunity. The occasional break in the trees allowed glimpses of the sky, but he remained primarily concealed within the cover of the forest.

To an onlooker, Alex's method of travel might have seemed like a daring acrobatic performance. But for him, it was a practical and efficient way to navigate the terrain, minimizing his contact with the ground and avoiding potential threats below.

With each leap and bound, Alex moved further away from the quaint house and deeper into the heart of the forest, his path as unpredictable and elusive as the wind. His stoic demeanor and agile movements made him a force to be reckoned with, a silent guardian in the midst of the wilderness.
