Chapter 22 - The Tournament Begins

The air buzzed with energy as the opening day of the Bender League Tournament dawned, and the city of Mira transformed into a vibrant sea of banners, excitement, and anticipation. The streets around the Tournament Grounds were packed with people from all over the world of Benders, cheering, shouting, and celebrating the start of one of the most prestigious events in Bending history. The tournament grounds themselves were immense, set in the heart of Mira's most famous landmark, The Crown of the Forest. Giant trees with intertwining branches formed natural stands around the massive arena, creating a stadium-like effect with the lush greenery overhead acting like a living canopy. The open arena shimmered, surrounded by energy barriers that flickered with brilliant colors, showcasing Mira's renowned mastery over environment manipulation. It was early, but already the grounds were filled with teams, officials, and spectators. The sound of boots on stone, the crackling of energy in the air, and the excited murmur of the crowd created an almost intoxicating atmosphere.Unit 92 and Unit 3, now collectively representing Stronghold, made their way toward their section, eyes scanning the massive arena. John, Anne, Alex, and Gordon stood side by side, their expressions reflecting a mix of excitement and nervous energy."Wow... this is insane," Anne said, her eyes wide as she took in the enormous space, the grandstands filled with people from every corner of the Bender cities. "I've never seen anything like this."Gordon crossed his arms, feigning nonchalance, but his eyes betrayed his awe. "It's just a tournament. We've trained for this. We'll be fine."John chuckled, glancing at Anne and then over to the throngs of teams gathering in their own areas. "Yeah, sure. Just a tournament. You realize we're up against the best of the best, right?"Alex, always the calm in the storm, stood with his hands in his pockets, scanning the crowd with a lazy grin. "Looks like competition's gonna be fierce. Good. I was getting bored."As they settled into their area, they caught sight of several teams arriving from other cities, each with their unique attire and auras reflecting their bending styles.Ignis Peak's team strode in, their fiery red-and-orange uniforms crackling with energy. Each of their members exuded raw power, the heat radiating off them as they moved as a unit. Their leader, a tall, imposing woman with flames flickering in her hair, gave a smirk as she caught sight of the Stronghold group."Looks like we've got some competition," John muttered, his eyes narrowing."You think they're the ones to beat?" Gordon asked, sizing them up."They'll be tough," Anne replied, "but we're tougher."Next, the team from Skyshear arrived, their pale blue and silver uniforms flowing in the breeze as if they were made of air itself. They moved silently, almost ghostlike, their steps barely touching the ground. The leader, a lean, wiry figure with winds swirling around his hands, gave them a brief nod of acknowledgment."Air benders," Alex mused. "They'll be tricky to pin down.""Let's not get ahead of ourselves," Gordon said, clearly eager to prove himself. Then came the team from Terra. They moved with a slow, steady confidence, their dark brown and green uniforms blending into the earth. Their leader, a burly figure with arms like tree trunks, gave a casual glance around the arena, his team close behind him. Their steps seemed to rumble the ground beneath them, a reminder of the raw power of their earth-bending abilities."They look like they could take a hit or two," Alex remarked, eyes trailing the heavy-footed team."Let's not test that theory unless we have to," Anne added.Just as they were discussing the incoming teams, a ripple of excitement ran through the crowd, drawing everyone's attention to the far side of the arena. The murmur of voices grew louder, and soon it became clear why.Mira's team had arrived. As the home team, Mira was well-known for their environmental manipulation, and they didn't disappoint. Their uniforms shimmered like the colors of the forest—deep greens, browns, and flashes of gold that seemed to change with every movement. The ground beneath their feet responded to their presence, shifting and bending as they walked, as if the very earth itself was at their command.Leading them was none other than Collin Easton, his sharp eyes scanning the arena with practiced calm. He was tall, his movements smooth and calculated, like someone who had been doing this his entire life. His dark hair was tied back loosely, and his presence commanded immediate attention. The crowd erupted into applause and cheers as he and his team entered.Alex, leaning against the railing, nudged John. "Isn't that the guy Mr. Easton mentioned? His son?"John raised an eyebrow. "Looks like it."Anne watched Collin closely, her eyes narrowing as she observed how effortlessly he moved through the arena. "We'll need to watch out for him. Mira knows how to use this environment to their advantage."Collin glanced in their direction, his expression unreadable, but there was no denying the air of confidence he carried with him. The pressure was on; as the host city, expectations for Mira were sky-high, and Collin knew it.The teams continued to gather, and soon the arena was a kaleidoscope of colors and energy. The excitement in the air was electric, and the weight of the upcoming battles loomed large over them all. Finally, the stadium announcer's voice boomed across the grounds. "Welcome to the Bender League Tournament!" The crowd erupted in cheers, and the energy in the stadium surged to a new level. The students of Stronghold huddled together as the announcement continued, reminding them of the challenge ahead and the honor of being chosen to represent their city.Anne clenched her fists, adrenaline coursing through her veins. "This is it. Everything we've trained for."John gave a small smile, his fiery aura flickering around him. "Let's make Stronghold proud."Alex cracked his knuckles, the faintest trace of a grin on his face. "Time to show them what we're made of."As the day wore on, the teams began to break off, preparing for the trials that awaited them in the coming days. But the tension lingered, and the pressure of the competition settled heavily on each of them. Every rival team seemed stronger than the last, and the eyes of the entire Bender world were on them.
