Chapter 17 - Graduation

The day had finally come.

The air buzzed with excitement as the Academy grounds swelled with students and families, all gathered to witness the graduation of a new class of mages, warriors, and scholars. Banners embroidered with symbols of arcane houses and noble lineages hung from the tall stone pillars, swaying slightly in the breeze. The courtyard was filled with rows of chairs, the stage at the center bearing the Academy's crest, a symbol of power and knowledge intertwined.

I stood in the back, arms crossed, trying to take it all in. It felt like a lifetime ago when I'd first set foot in this place as Ryuji Hayashi, unsure of my footing in this new world. Now, after countless challenges and revelations, I had a new sense of purpose, even if that purpose still felt hazy on some days.

Beside me, Selene Valeria adjusted her ceremonial robe, the deep blue fabric adorned with silver embroidery. Her expression, as always, was composed, regal even, but I could sense the tension underneath. She'd been waiting for this day just as much as I had—perhaps even more. For Selene, this wasn't just about graduation. It was about proving her worth to her family, her lineage, and herself.

"You ready for this?" I asked, half-smiling, breaking the silence.

Selene gave a small nod, her eyes flickering toward the stage where the Academy's headmaster had begun his speech. "I've been ready for years," she replied, her voice calm, though I could hear the determination underneath.

"And yet, you still look nervous," I teased.

Her lips quirked slightly, though she didn't bother to deny it. "I'm not nervous," she said softly, her violet eyes narrowing in my direction. "I'm focused."

I couldn't help but grin at that. Selene was always focused—driven by something deep inside her, something she never fully voiced but which I had glimpsed over the years we had trained together. She was powerful, no doubt, but more than that, she had a strength of will that was unmatched.

On my other side, Shinzo, towering as ever with his broad, imposing frame, stood silently watching the proceedings. His expression was unreadable, his usual jovial attitude tempered by the gravity of the occasion. Graduation meant something different for all of us. For Shinzo, it was the culmination of years of discipline and physical mastery. For Selene, it was the next step toward her long-desired goal. For me... well, it was another milestone on this unpredictable journey that fate had thrown me into.

"You know, Ryuji," Shinzo said in his deep voice, "this is probably the first time I've seen you look... thoughtful."

I raised an eyebrow. "I'm always thoughtful."

"No, you're usually distracted," he countered with a grin. "Lost in your own head."

I chuckled, though there was some truth to his words. Ever since I had awakened in this world, my mind had been occupied by so many things—fate scripts, magical systems, political intrigue—that sometimes I did feel like I wasn't fully present in the moment.

The headmaster's voice boomed across the courtyard, snapping my attention back. He was announcing the top graduates, and it was no surprise when Selene's name was called first. She stepped forward, her chin held high, and received her emblem of mastery in arcane studies. The crowd applauded, but I could see that her eyes were already fixed on the horizon—on what came next.

Shinzo's name was called next, and the applause was even louder. His reputation as a formidable warrior was well-known throughout the Academy. He strode forward confidently, his large hand almost swallowing the emblem given to him. He turned back to us, his grin wide and infectious.

And then, finally, my name.

"Ryuji Hayashi."

I felt a strange mix of emotions as I walked toward the stage. The cheers and claps sounded distant, muted, as if I were hearing them from far away. This graduation was a moment of closure, but also one of uncertainty. My fate wasn't sealed by a diploma or emblem. It was tied to something far greater—something I still didn't fully understand.

I accepted the emblem, its weight cold in my hand, and looked out over the crowd. For a moment, I thought I saw Father, standing in the distance, watching. But when I blinked, he was gone. A trick of the mind, no doubt.

The ceremony passed in a blur after that, the speeches and formalities washing over me as my thoughts drifted. I was aware of Dog at my feet, his watchful presence grounding me in the moment, but my mind kept returning to the Fate Scripts. The quiet reminder that no matter how much I achieved here, I was still bound to something bigger.

As the crowd began to disperse, Selene, Shinzo, and I regrouped near the Academy gates. Selene's eyes sparkled with a quiet sense of accomplishment, though her usual stoic mask remained in place.

"So, what now?" Shinzo asked, stretching his arms behind his head. "We've graduated. We're free."

"Free," I muttered, the word tasting strange on my tongue. Freedom in this world was never as simple as it sounded.

"I know where I'm headed," Selene said firmly. "There's still much to be done. My family expects me to return, but I have my own goals." She glanced at me, her gaze lingering just long enough for me to catch the silent question there.

I nodded. "Yeah. We all have our own paths to walk."

For a moment, none of us spoke. We had fought, trained, and learned together for years, but this felt like the beginning of something new—something much more uncertain.

"Well," Shinzo broke the silence, "wherever we end up, we'll have to meet again someday. No point in letting all these skills go to waste."

"Agreed" I said, with a hint of worry for the future, but not the bad kind, the worry that I would not make the most out of this new chapter in my life.

For the first time ever I needed to help myself.
