Chapter 10 - Father

The Valorian estate loomed large as we returned from the academy, the evening sun casting long shadows across the manicured lawns. My heart raced with anticipation. It had been far too long since I had last seen my father, Duke Valorian, and the thought of facing him brought a mixture of excitement and anxiety.

As we entered the grand foyer, the familiar scent of polished wood and incense filled the air. The walls were adorned with portraits of my ancestors—each one a reminder of the weight of my family's legacy. I glanced at Satsuki and Haruto, both of them wearing expressions that mirrored my own apprehension.

"Let's not keep Father waiting," Satsuki said, her voice steady. She led the way down the long corridor, her footsteps echoing softly against the marble floors. Haruto walked closely beside me, his eyes wide with curiosity.

"Do you think he'll be happy to see us?" Haruto asked, his youthful enthusiasm tempered by uncertainty.

"I hope so," I replied, trying to reassure him. "He's always been proud of our accomplishments, especially yours, Satsuki."

"Let's just hope he doesn't put me on the spot," she said with a slight laugh, but I could see the tension beneath her smile.

As we approached the double doors leading into my father's study, I felt a sudden rush of memories—his stern voice lecturing me about responsibility, his rare moments of affection after I had achieved something noteworthy. The image of him standing tall, adorned in his noble regalia, was etched into my mind.

Satsuki pushed open the door, and we stepped inside. The room was expansive, filled with rich mahogany furniture and shelves stacked with ancient tomes. A large desk stood in the center, papers strewn about, and a roaring fireplace cast a warm glow over the room.

At the desk sat my father, his silver hair slightly disheveled, and his brow furrowed in concentration. He looked up as we entered, and for a moment, time seemed to freeze.

"Father," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

His expression shifted, surprise flickering across his face before being replaced by a warm smile. "Ryuji! You've returned." He stood, his tall frame imposing yet familiar.

I rushed forward, and he enveloped me in a firm embrace. "I'm glad to see you well, my son," he said, his voice low and gravelly. "I trust your studies are progressing?"

"Yes, Father. I've been working hard," I replied, stepping back to look at him. The wrinkles around his eyes were deeper than I remembered, and his shoulders seemed heavier.

"Ryuji!" Satsuki chimed in, stepping forward to join us. "We've missed you, Father."

He turned to her, his smile broadening. "And I have missed both of you. It is good to have my children back under one roof again."

"Haruto's been studying abroad as well," Satsuki added, gesturing to our younger brother, who was still standing slightly behind us.

"Of course!" Father exclaimed, his eyes lighting up as he noticed Haruto. "Come here, boy!"

Haruto stepped forward, a grin spreading across his face. "Father, I've learned a lot! I can show you my new sword techniques!"

"Is that so?" Father said, his pride evident. "I would very much like to see them."

As Haruto launched into an excited recounting of his adventures, I took a moment to observe my father closely. Despite his stern demeanor, I could sense a weariness in him—a burden that seemed to grow heavier with each passing day.

"Father," I said, my voice drawing his attention back to me. "Is everything alright with the estate? I've heard whispers of unrest among the nobility."

His expression hardened slightly, the jovial air dissipating. "There are always whispers," he replied, his voice clipped. "But I assure you, the Valorian family is strong. It's simply the nature of politics."

"Is it just politics, though?" I pressed gently, concerned. "I've felt a darkness creeping into the academy, a tension that seems more than just rivalry among the students."

Father studied me for a moment, his expression inscrutable. "You're perceptive, Ryuji. That is good. But there are some matters that are not for you to concern yourself with just yet."

Before I could respond, the door swung open, and a servant entered, bowing respectfully. "My Lord, the delegates have arrived and are waiting in the parlor."

"Thank you," Father said, straightening his posture. He turned back to us, his demeanor shifting once again. "Let us not keep our guests waiting. You will join me, won't you?"

"Of course," I replied, exchanging a glance with Satsuki and Haruto.

As we followed him out of the study, I couldn't shake the feeling that my father was concealing something important. The world outside was changing, and I could sense that the political games would soon intertwine with my own journey.

We entered the parlor, where a group of elegantly dressed nobles awaited us. The air was thick with anticipation, and I felt a surge of pride as I stood beside my family.

"Welcome, esteemed guests!" Father proclaimed, his voice booming as he gestured for us to stand with him. "You are honored guests in the Valorian household. It is our pleasure to host you."

As introductions began, I felt a newfound sense of responsibility settle over me. My father may have been a formidable presence, but it was now my turn to step into the light—to defend my family's name, and to face whatever darkness lay ahead.

The weight of my lineage bore down on me, but with my siblings by my side and the strength of our bond, I knew we would face it together.
