The edges of the portal were like nothing I'd ever felt, a cold, cutting wave of energy washing over and tingling my skin as I stepped through. Ember and Silvermane were close behind my heels; the look of nerves was etched upon their faces. The very second the last one of us passed through, the portal went out of sight, falling silent from its charged energies.
We were in this large chamber, where the feeling of the air was heavy; the walls were tall and aligned with some weird, glowing symbols. The room was perfectly round, and on the floor lay a pattern of sorts of what seemed to be shifting lines. And a column of light right in the middle of the room illuminated it well, yet it did not warm at all.
"Where are we?" Ember asked low, as if a raised voice would wake something up.
She turned a cold, critical eye on the room. Her silver eyes narrowed. "This has to be the outer sanctum of the Nexus. But why does it seem. alive?"
