After seeing or perhaps hearing Erika's discovery, her mother was enthusiastic about it as well. They both felt it to be an opportunity to work together. Erika's mother was more excited about working on something together with her daughter. They sit at the ground and Erika explained to her mother how sound as a wave is transferred from one place to another and can be heard at great distances if the speed of travel is more and the original wave can be protected from dissipating. "Wow I didn't know my daughter had such ideas in such a tender age. It seems like you have surpassed me one of the top students in my time." She stopped for a while and looked at her daughter closely. She was still the naive 10 year old girl that she knew very well but also like she didn't knew her. They were sitting in the garden of the palace. There was a beautiful breeze that flew through them signaling the arrival of winter in a few months. "After curing from your disease you have become so mature. Before you used to act all spoiled and come to me at the slightest of trouble." She laughed a bit while saying this. Meanwhile hearing these words Erika flustered her cheeks became red. "Seriously mother, you are exaggerating. S-surely I wasn't that spoiled." She said while pouting. They laughed quite a bit. After this hearty laugh the duo moved onto the serious stuff. "Fufu, lets stop this here for now." Mother said with a laugh.
"How long has it been since we laughed like that." Erika's mother said looking at the sky. She continued, "Recently it seems you have been occupied with something everyday. You even went who knows where and returned all spoiled in a weird clothings." "Ah, please forget about it. It won't happen again. I am reflecting on my actions properly." Erika hastily replied. "Oh, what were those clothes that you..." As mother was saying these words Erika quickly changed the subject. "Ah, mother about the toy I used to talk from afar with you you know it's called a telephone. More precisely Feld Telefon 34(Drei und vierzig)." "Wow that's quite some name. Where did you pick it up? I have never heard about it myself." Erika was shaking, afraid maybe to protect one secret she is about to throw herself in Siberia. "nono that's just a number. 34." "oh, you can pronounce such hard words?" "Yes I picked them up." Erika replied happy that her mother forgot the previous conversation. "Of course I can pronounce such hard words. What do you expect from top tier Wehraboo and Otaku?" She thought and laughed a little. "Any ways, back to the telephone." Erika spoke, "Mother do you know a way to make the signal amplify?" "Hmm.." mother thought for a bit. Her right hand was on her chin and her gaze was downwards. She thought for a moment. "Maybe lets try using magic." Erika caught those words. "I know without magic it's impossible but the problem is how to use it." "Yeah you have a valid point." Mother said. She continued, "You know there can be two ways to use magic in this scenario." Erika listened to what her mother said attentively. "One is to use magic in the wire directly while connecting the line while the other is that the user will use their magic to protect the wave as it travelled great distances. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages." Erika was curious about this aspect. "I just want to use them as field telephones for my Wehrmacht. So it won't need to cover great distances only a short distance of few kilometers will do the trick." Her thoughts were interrupted by her mother's voice. "What are you thinking dear?" Erika snapped out of her thought and replied, "I think since we have a huge magic pool, we can use it to talk over distances from here to the royal capital. But if we distribute it to the people it would be better to have us fuse magic beforehand in the wire. Since the people of our territory will only contact with the town and the surrounding villages which are all spread over 10 kilometers at most we won't have to use vast magic in them." Her mother thought about it for a while. Erika spoke again, "Also if we use protective jackets around the wire, we will have to use even less magic to maintain communication." Erika picked up a stick and drew the German feldtelefon 34 with it on the ground and showed her mother the parts it contained. "There is this part which should be held against you ears is used to hear while the other end is used to talk." She pointed the parts with the sticks and showed to her mother. She spoke again, "Since basically there is only one wire connecting both, you have to wait for the other person to finish before talking. The communication is both ways and a crank is used to notify the other end about the call." These were all very interesting features for Erika's mother. She attentively listened to her daughter as she explained.
Erika's mother stood up from her position and Erika followed suit. They started working on the thing. Erika used her craftsmanship magic. She could make thick wires for the transmission of the signal. She also used some oil and tar the only protective jackets available at that time on the wire. She then used the previously used paper cups to make toy phones and went inside the garden forest behind which was now empty since troops training was moved near the dark forest, the shed that was used as arsenal and the craftsmen who were making them regularly however were present and were under the supervision of Bauer. Now she could clearly hear and talk to her mother from such a distance. She excitedly ran back to her mother as she shouted, "It worked, it worked." Now it was her mother's turn to work on the receiver and the hand crank. These type of field telephones used electromagnetic hand cranks that would send electrical signal but that was simply impossible in this age. Erika was curious as to how her mother would make the crank work. "Dear, please come and help me design the receivers and the crank to make it look just like the one you drew." Erika's mother called out to her. But she was not able to use her magic to make the crank or the two parts receivers. The most she could do was infuse the thing with magic to help her mother concentrate on the more tricky part. Her mother instructed her as to where to infuse the magic. Erika clearly saw as her mother used two wires for the hearing and speaking part and then used a barrier magic on the speaking part. "Now dear infuse the barrier with your magic." Mother said pointing at the barrier she put. Erika did as she was instructed. "This barrier will make sure the words coming into the receiver will not enter the speaking part." She explained to her daughter. Erika was amused with how knowledgeable her mother was. "Now slice the wires from the middle and take the longer portion to the hearing part." Mother instructed. Erika cut the wire accordingly and joined it to the hearing portion. This way the receiver and the wire was complete. They tested it again. This was also successful. Finally the crank remained. It had to be something to generate a large enough sound to notify the other person. For this part Erika's mother used a small bell. She asked Erika to enchant it with her magic to make it sound more. All this time Erika wasn't using her magic but rather infusing her mana that controls magic to amplify the power of the magic her mother did. "I will definitely skip this crank part." Erika thought, "I will attache operators who will keep listening to whenever there was a call. So the loud sound will be a trouble for the soldiers." "Now let's test this complete version." Mother's words broke her thought process. "Yes, right away." Erika ran inside the small garden forest and waited. Her mother started turning the crank and Erika could hear her receiver made a metallic sound. She picked the phone up and said, "Mother I can hear you. Stop the cranking." "Oh, sorry dear. It seems some more work is required on it." Mother replied from the other end. "Yep, I am definitely skipping the crank." She thought again.
They both worked with the telephone until it was totally usable. Whole day passed with the two working on it. Erika was happy as was her mother. "M-mother," Erika hesitated for a bit. Mother smiled at her and said in a gentle tone, "What is it dear?" "If it's okay with you can we work together on making the telephone?" She was flustered. She knew that she didn't want to include her family in her secret plans and that her mother was actually busy with handling the territory in the absence of her father but she enjoyed her time too much to let it go. Her mother was on cloud nine. "Of course dear. " She didn't hesitate even for a bit. She hugged her daughter and said, "I thought you didn't want to spend time with me and were avoiding me. I would be happy to help you with it whenever I am free." Erika was happy. Not only she became closer to her mother a bit but another step was also accomplished for her Wehrmacht. Though there was a slight guilt inside her about her not being the real daughter or keeping secrets from her. But she brushed it aside. "I am doing it to protect them." She thought. She was very happy to secure some quality time with her mother.
