Rod's steps were heavy as he exited the royal court, his fist clenched tightly. He could still feel the sting of the king's command. But it was the silence that followed the king's words that haunted him most.
Why had the king reacted this way? he thought.
Rod's thoughts were interrupted by a figure beside him, Duke Rowan who walked silently at his side.
"It's strange, isn't it?" Rowan said. "The prince, his own son has taken such a bold step and yet the king refuses to act. His hesitation—it's almost as if he wants this to unfold."
Rod glanced at the duke, a deep frown creasing his brow. "I don't like it, Rowan. This doesn't sit right with me."

Julian sat in his chair with his legs spread wide, staring out the window taking in the serene scene before him. But the wet, slurping sounds beneath him pulled his attention away from the world outside.
