The moment Kirito laid eyes on the elder, a chill ran down his spine, freezing him in place. It wasn't just fear—it was instinct. The man before him, with his half-masked face and bandaged arm, radiated danger like a snake waiting to strike. Kirito's thoughts spiraled as he watched the old man sip his tea. *That's Danzo. I'm sure of it.*
Kirito immediately knew one thing: *"I have to show I'm the worst of the worst today."*
---
Just as he made that decision, a screen popped up in front of him.
---
**First Quest: Danzo's Root Selection**
Danzo, one of the advisors of the Third Hokage and commander of the Root division, has come to select children from the orphanage to convert them into Root ninjas.
---
**Mission**: Do your best not to get selected.
---
**Reward**: 10 Shop Points and the Shop unlocked.
---
**Failure**: You become a mindless soldier for years and die at his whim. The Shop remains locked for the rest of your life.
---
Kirito's lips twitched as he read the mission. *Well, thank you very much for that delightful image,* he thought sarcastically. *I really needed the mental picture of myself being turned into a mindless zombie for some underground cult.*
But deep down, a shiver of real fear ran through him. This wasn't just some fantasy anymore; failing here had actual life-and-death consequences. *Great, first I have to deal with my own bloodline, now I have to avoid becoming Danzo's puppet. What's next, a guest appearance by Orochimaru offering me a cursed seal?*
He tried to calm his nerves by cracking a joke in his head. *Forget becoming Hokage, I'm just trying to survive day one.*
---
Danzo sat down at a table, sipping his tea as the children were lined up by the Root ninjas dressed in black. These weren't just any kids—they were orphans, like Kirito. Everyone knew this was their chance to become full-fledged ninjas . The excitement was almost palpable. Some of the children couldn't stop fidgeting, their eyes gleaming with anticipation.
One by one, the kids were called up by the Root ninjas. They asked each child if their chakra was unlocked and then verified it themselves. Those with unlocked chakra were put in one group, and those without were set aside like expired goods.
Kirito, watching from the sidelines, scanned the crowd and spotted a blonde-haired kid who looked more like a girl than a boy. His face seemed familiar, though Kirito couldn't quite place where he'd seen him before. *Wait, I know that kid?*
Kirito shook his head, deciding that his current problem was far more pressing. *First things first: cross this bridge, then deal with that face.*
When it was his turn, the Root ninja barely gave him a glance before motioning him to run laps around the orphanage like the other children who started running, full of enthusiasm, but Kirito had a different plan. He stumbled dramatically after less than one lap, falling to the ground, huffing and puffing like he'd run a marathon.
Meanwhile, most of the children completed three or four laps, with the more talented ones pushing for six. Kirito watched in awe from his spot on the ground. *These kids are running at least three kilometers without breaking a sweat. And they're five or six years old!*
The blonde-haired kid he noticed earlier ran three laps without standing out much—he hadn't unlocked his chakra either. But those who ran more than three laps clearly had their chakra unlocked, maybe unlocking chakra gives a boost even if we are not using it. Kirito sighed as he faked exhaustion, rolling onto his back for dramatic effect.
*Good thing I didn't unlock my chakra,* Kirito thought with relief, eyeing the group of children Danzo was paying close attention to.
As the sun set and the selection process wrapped up, Danzo finally stood and called for the group. Seventeen children, all with their chakra unlocked, were taken by the Root ninjas, their fates sealed.
Kirito let out a sigh of relief, wiping the imaginary sweat from his brow. *That was close. If my chakra had been unlocked, I'd be marching off to Danzo's brainwashing camp right about now.*
Just as Kirito thought it was over, a familiar pop-up appeared in front of him.
---
**Congratulations on completing your first quest, host.**
**Reward has been distributed.**
**Shop is unlocked.**
**As this was the host's first quest, a special reward has been granted.**
**Host received 1 ticket to spin the Wheel of Luck.**
---
Kirito's eyes widened in surprise. *Wheel of Luck?* Is it the same gacha that comes in many mangas he thought, a grin forming on his face. *Now we're talking!* He was over the moon, finally getting a break after the near-death experience that was avoiding Danzo's selection.
"Whew, dodged that mindless Root soldier life. All I gotta do now is avoid getting any more quests involving Danzo, and I should be golden." He grinned, thinking about how he'd made it through the day.
He chuckled and added, "Guess you could say I'm... Root-proofed."
His grin faded quickly as he realized just how bad that pun was.
Shaking off the creeping thought, he focused on the present. "Right, let's not think too hard about it. I got a free ticket to spin, and I'll take whatever lucky break I can get." A grin spread across his face. "Who knows, maybe I'll win something OP and make this whole ninja business a cakewalk."
*But knowing my luck,* he thought wryly, *it'll probably be a paperclip.*
--
Kirito couldn't contain his excitement anymore as he hurriedly darted toward the washroom. After locking the door, he opened his inventory and pulled out the spin ticket, his heart racing in anticipation. The moment he selected it, a pop-up appeared in front of him, asking if he wanted to use the ticket.
"Yes, yes, just do it!" he whispered impatiently, jabbing the 'Yes' button with enthusiasm.
In an instant, a translucent wheel of fortune appeared before him, slowly spinning in place. His eyes scanned the wheel, noticing that there wasn't a single "Better luck next time" space on it. Kirito let out a sigh of relief and cracked a joke. "Well, at least I won't walk away with a coupon for free ramen. Though, now that I think about it... ramen wouldn't be that bad."
He grinned and focused on the wheel. His eyes first landed on an image of what looked like a fruit—no, not just any fruit. His heart leaped into his throat. *Is that… the Chakra Fruit?* He'd read about it in Naruto and countless theories and fanfictions. The Chakra Fruit was the legendary source of unimaginable power, and just the thought of having that within his reach made his palms sweat.
Then his gaze shifted to a series of ten consecutive columns, each featuring a tailed beast. His eyes widened as he read the descriptions: "Become the Jinchuriki of N-Tails." The last column? The **Ten-Tails**. Kirito's jaw nearly dropped. *Holy crap, they're just handing out bijuu like candy!*
He forced himself to tear his eyes away from the chakra fruit and the tailed beasts, taking in the rest of the wheel. There were all kinds of items—swords, scrolls, kunai, some blurred-out sections with items that looked mysterious and powerful. Even the lowest prize was "Level Up by 10." *Well, at least there's no paperclip... small mercies.*
Unable to contain himself any longer, Kirito pressed the translucent red button in front of him. The wheel of fortune began to spin, slowly at first, but then it picked up speed, whirling faster and faster until it became a blur of colors and shapes. Kirito's heart raced with it, his eyes glued to the spinning wheel.
After a few seconds of staring in awe, he pressed the red button again, now glowing blue. The wheel's speed began to slow, ticking softly as it passed each section. His eyes followed it, hope and anxiety battling within him as it ticked past the chakra fruit, the tailed beasts, an ornate sword, a glowing orb, and a scroll with strange symbols.
Tick.
Tick.
And finally, it came to a stop.
The prize in front of him? A **Handband with many, many seals**.
Kirito stared at it, his face falling. "You've got to be kidding me," he muttered. "I was this close to becoming a god, and you give me... a Handband?" He couldn't decide whether to be happy or utterly devastated. *Out of all the legendary items, chakra fruit, and tailed beasts, I get a handband...*
He sighed, shaking his head. "Well, I guess beggars can't be choosers," he muttered with a shrug, though the disappointment was hard to ignore.
Swiping to his inventory, Kirito took out the hand band and immediately, a pop-up appeared:
---
**- Epic Weight Band -**
- Once the user wears this band, it functions as an adjustable weight. The weight distributes evenly across the entire body to avoid discomfort.
- The weight is adjustable from just a thought, allowing the user to increase or decrease it as much as they desire.
- **Rare Effect**: No weight limit.
- **Epic Effect**: Increases physical training speed by three times.
---
Kirito's eyes widened as he read the description. A grin slowly spread across his face. *Okay, maybe this isn't as lame as I thought.* The rare effect alone made it worth it, The fact that there was no weight limit and Epic effect of tripling his physical training speed made it even more overpowered. The sarcastic part of him almost expected a hidden clause like, 'Tip : May crush you if set too high,' but thankfully, there was no such thing.
With newfound excitement, Kirito slipped the weight band onto his wrist. Instantly, he felt it—pressure across his entire body, not just his arms and legs, but even his fingers. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was enough to make him feel the added strain.
Curious but cautious, he didn't push the limits too far, deciding to lower the weight slightly. No need to snap his four-year-old body in half before the real training even started.
---
That night, Kirito spent his time getting used to the weight band. He marveled at the new sensation, adjusting the weight bit by bit while walking around the orphanage. By the time dinner came, his movements felt natural, as if his body had already started adapting to the new strain.
As night fell, Kirito slipped into his shared bedroom. Five other children occupied the room, snoring peacefully in the three bunk beds. Quiet as a mouse, Kirito waited until the room was dark and the children were sound asleep. Then, he quietly slipped out of bed and tiptoed toward the washroom.
---
Once inside, Kirito took out a cloth from his inventory, unfolding it neatly on the sink. His hands shook slightly as he reached for his next item: the **Bloodline Pill**. He stared at it, the small red pill glowing faintly in his palm. This was it. The moment he'd been waiting for. He knew the next few minutes—or possibly hours—were going to be rough, maybe even excruciating.
But Kirito, always one to ease tension with humor, couldn't resist making a sarcastic remark to himself. "Well, here goes nothing. If this ends with me screaming in pain, at least no one can say I didn't go out in style. 'Local child found dead in a bathroom, suspected overdose on ancient ninja drug.' Yeah, that's how I want to be remembered."
He chuckled nervously, taking a deep breath. "Seriously though... what's the worst that could happen? Oh right—horrifying pain and possible death. No big deal."
Grimacing at his own morbid joke, Kirito braced himself and popped the pill into his mouth, swallowing it in one quick gulp.
