Chapter 9 - Forbidden Magic

The atmosphere within the Arcane Academy was electric. The trials had set the tone for the rest of the semester, with students already vying for positions and status. Despite the grandeur of the Academy and its constant buzz, Dark found himself walking the halls with a different kind of purpose. He wasn't here for status, nor was he concerned about competition. His true goal was buried deep within the Academy's ancient walls.

Dark had noticed it on his first day, the subtle way the mana flowed through the grounds, like an underground river that few seemed to sense. The Arcane Academy wasn't just a place for learning; it was built on something ancient, something powerful. Dark had felt it even before he arrived, and his suspicions were only growing stronger.

After a few uneventful days of classes, lectures on elemental theory and foundational spellcraft that Dark found painfully simplistic, he began spending his evenings exploring the library. The academy boasted one of the most extensive collections of magical texts in the kingdom, and Dark knew that somewhere within its walls were the answers he sought.

That night, he found himself standing before a section of the library that was off-limits to most students, the Restricted Section. Its entrance was guarded by powerful wards, glowing faintly in the dim candlelight of the library. Few students dared approach this area, let alone attempt to breach it. But Dark wasn't like most students.

He had been coming here for the past few nights, studying the wards carefully. They were intricate, designed to detect any tampering or unauthorized entry, but Dark was confident he could bypass them. He had already identified several weak points in the enchantments, flaws that most mages wouldn't notice.

Dark waited until the library was empty, the last of the students leaving for their dormitories. The librarian, an elderly mage, was nodding off at his desk, his head resting on an open book. Perfect.

Moving silently, Dark approached the barrier. His fingers hovered just above the surface of the glowing ward, feeling the mana that pulsed within it. Wards are like any other spell, he thought. They can be unraveled if you understand their structure.

With a deep breath, Dark extended his mana into the ward, weaving it carefully through the layers of magic that composed the barrier. He didn't force his way through, such a brute-force approach would only trigger the alarm. Instead, he gently manipulated the flow of mana, redirecting the enchantments away from him, just for a moment.

The barrier shimmered and, with a soft flicker, opened a small gap. Dark stepped through without hesitation, feeling the magic ripple slightly as it closed behind him. He had done it.

Inside the Restricted Section, the air felt different, denser, charged with old magic. The shelves were lined with thick, dust-covered tomes, many of them bound in leather so old it had cracked with age. These were the books that held the real knowledge, the forbidden spells that the academy deemed too dangerous for ordinary students.

Dark scanned the titles, his fingers brushing over the spines of the books. Most of them were written in ancient languages, their contents locked away behind layers of cryptic symbols and diagrams. But Dark had always been good at deciphering codes.

This is what I've been looking for.

He pulled a thick volume from the shelf, its cover marked with arcane symbols that glowed faintly in the dim light. The title, written in an ancient script, translated roughly to The Grimoire of Lost Realms. Dark's heart raced as he opened the book, its pages filled with diagrams and descriptions of spells that bent the laws of nature itself. Time manipulation, spatial distortion, reality alteration, these were the magics that had been lost to history, buried in the annals of time for fear of their destructive potential.

As he flipped through the pages, his mind raced with possibilities. He had always known there was more to magic than what the academy taught. They focused on control, on limiting power to what was deemed "safe." But real magic, the kind that could reshape the world, was hidden in these pages.

Dark spent hours in the Restricted Section, absorbing the knowledge from the ancient grimoire. The more he read, the more he understood. The spells described here were beyond anything he had ever seen, but they were also more dangerous. The book warned that these spells required precise control, any mistake could result in catastrophic consequences. But Dark wasn't afraid. He had been mastering control since his first experiments with mana. He knew that if anyone could handle this magic, it was him.

---

It wasn't until the first light of dawn crept through the windows of the library that Dark finally closed the book. His mind was buzzing with the information he had learned, but he knew he couldn't stay here any longer. The academy would soon wake, and it wouldn't take long for someone to notice if he was missing from his dormitory.

Carefully, Dark returned the grimoire to its place on the shelf and stepped back toward the barrier. This time, opening it was even easier than before. He slipped through the gap, leaving the Restricted Section as if he had never been there.

As he made his way back to his dormitory, his thoughts were already spinning with plans. The spells he had learned tonight were just the beginning. He needed more, more knowledge, more power. And he knew exactly where to find it.

---

The next few days passed in a blur. Dark attended his classes as usual, but his mind was elsewhere. The lessons seemed even more tedious now that he had glimpsed real magic. The instructors droned on about basic elemental manipulation, while Dark's thoughts were consumed with the possibilities of time manipulation and spatial distortion.

During one particularly dull lecture on mana channels, Dark felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned to see Serena Valis, the girl he had faced in the trial, sitting beside him. She had been relatively quiet since their duel, but there was something different about her today, an air of curiosity.

"You've been distracted," Serena said quietly, careful not to draw the attention of the instructor. "Is something on your mind?"

Dark regarded her for a moment, wondering how much to reveal. Serena had shown promise during the trial, though she was still far behind him in terms of raw talent. Still, there was a certain honesty about her that Dark found refreshing. She wasn't like Gareth, constantly posturing for dominance. Serena seemed more interested in learning, in growing stronger.

"I've been thinking about the academy's restrictions," Dark replied, keeping his voice low. "They limit what we can learn."

Serena raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean? We're taught everything we need to know to become skilled mages."

"Are we?" Dark asked, his eyes glinting with curiosity. "What about the magic they don't teach us? The magic they keep hidden because they're afraid of what we might do with it?"

Serena's eyes widened slightly, but she didn't immediately dismiss his words. Instead, she leaned in closer. "What are you saying? That there's more to magic than what they're showing us?"

Dark gave a small, knowing smile. "There's always more. You just have to know where to look."

Serena was quiet for a moment, clearly turning his words over in her mind. "And... you've found where to look, haven't you?"

Dark didn't answer, but the look in his eyes said enough. Serena's expression shifted from curiosity to intrigue. "You're not like the others," she said softly. "You're searching for something more. Something powerful."

Dark nodded, appreciating her perceptiveness. "If you want to become stronger, you have to go beyond what they teach us here. The academy is just the beginning."

Serena glanced around the room, as if checking to make sure no one else had overheard their conversation. "What are you planning?"

Dark leaned back in his chair, his gaze distant. "Something big."
