Chapter 4 - The intersection of fate

The car sped forward in the night, and the lights on both sides of the street quickly passed by the car window, giving people the illusion that time was speeding up. Buckley's palms were slightly sweaty. Although he tried his best to remain calm on the surface, his inner anxiety surged like a tide. This life-and-death escape exhausted him, and Nora's silence only made the atmosphere more depressing.

"Nora," Buckley finally broke the silence in the car, "I need to know more. What kind of plan are my parents involved in? Why did they choose to implant that kind of information into my body?"

Nora's eyes were always fixed on the road ahead, but her voice was low with some complex emotions. "Your parents are geniuses, and their research is far beyond the current level of human technology. The theory of multidimensional universes and quantum consciousness transmission sound like the contents of science fiction novels, but for your parents, these are realities. They have discovered a way to connect with multiple dimensions of consciousness through specific genetic structures."

Buckley fell into deep thought. Multidimensional universe? Quantum consciousness transmission? He has always lived on the edge of the real world and never thought that he would become part of these cutting-edge theories.

"So the genes in my body... are the key to that connection?" Barkley asked.

Nora nodded. "Yes, the code you carry in your body is a key that can unlock the passage to other dimensions. Once this technology is mastered by the Shadow Council, they will have endless power-control time, space, and even change the laws of the entire universe."

Barkley's head began to sink, and he couldn't imagine what such power meant. Control the universe? This is beyond his understanding. But he knew that everything Nora said was not fiction, and the danger behind it was real.

"But why me? Why did they put this secret information on me instead of leaving it in the research data?" he asked.

Nora smiled bitterly, with a trace of sadness in her eyes. "Because the data is too easy to be stolen or destroyed, and you are the person they trust the most and the person they want to protect the most. They put their last hope on you, because you are not only their child, but also the core of their plan."

Barkley was silent for a moment, and his inner doubts gradually turned into anger. He couldn't help but ask, "Why didn't they tell me this? Why did they let me live in danger in ignorance?"

"They also want to protect you." Nora explained softly, "The fewer people know this information, the safer it is. They plan to gradually let you know the truth after you come of age, but they underestimated the power of the Shadow Council."

Barkley felt a dull pain in his chest, as if he was suffocated by an invisible weight. His parents designed all this for him silently, but he had no choice. Now, he not only has to face his parents' inheritance, but also has to endure the reality of being hunted.

At this moment, Nora suddenly interrupted his thoughts. "The front is Dr. White's residence." She pointed to a desolate forest in the distance, where an isolated house could be vaguely seen. There were no obvious signs around it. It was obviously a very secret place.

Barkley looked up at the house, and a sense of tension surged in his heart. He understood that this would be an important turning point in their escape. Dr. Irene White might be their only hope and the key to unlocking the secrets left by their parents.

The car stopped beside a narrow dirt road, and Nora whispered, "We have to walk here. Driving is too easy to attract attention."

The two got out of the car quickly, and Barkley looked around. There were dense trees and weeds everywhere, and the night wind blew, bringing bursts of cold. Nora led Barkley carefully through the woods and walked towards the lonely house.

When they got closer, Barkley found that the house looked more dilapidated than expected. The windows were almost covered with black cloth, the yard was overgrown with weeds, and the iron door was rusty, as if no one had been here for many years. However, Nora obviously knew this place well. She walked straight to the door and knocked three times gently.

After a moment of silence, a subtle sound came from the door. The door slowly opened a gap, and a thin figure appeared at the door.

"Nora?" The voice was a little surprised, but more cautious. Behind the door appeared an elderly woman with messy silver hair, but her eyes were still as sharp as an eagle.

"Dr. Irene, we need your help." Nora's tone was a little urgent.

Irene White's eyes swept over Nora and finally stopped at Buckley. Her brows frowned slightly, obviously recognizing him. "You are... Bolton's son?"

Buckley nodded, not knowing what to say. Dr. Irene looked at him for a while, then sighed and gently opened the door. "Come in, things are more complicated than I expected."

Buckley followed Nora into the house. The interior was simple and messy, with books and various strange instruments filled every corner, and the air was filled with stale smells. Irene led them through the narrow corridor and into a dim little living room.

"I know why you came to me." Irene sat down and motioned for the two to sit down. Although her voice was not loud, it revealed a confidence that she had been in control of the overall situation for a long time.

"Do you know the genetic codes left by my parents?" Buckley asked impatiently.

Irene nodded, looking at him steadily. "Not only do I know, I was also one of the main members who participated in that study back then."

This sentence was like a heavy bomb, exploding directly in Barkley's heart. He never thought that this seemingly ordinary old man in front of him had such a deep connection with his parents' research.

"Then can you decipher these codes?" Barkley asked, his voice full of expectation and nervousness.

Irene did not answer immediately, but fell into a brief contemplation. Her fingers tapped lightly on the armrest, as if measuring something.

"It's not difficult to decipher these codes." She finally said, "but it's not just a matter of decoding. The dimensions and space-time structures involved in these genetic information are very complex. Once turned on, they can never be turned off. And..." She paused and took a deep breath, "If used improperly, it may cause unimaginable consequences."

Barkley's heart sank suddenly. "What are the consequences?"

"The instability of the universe." Irene's voice was calm and firm. "Your parents' research involves intervention in other dimensions. Once this channel is opened, it may cause the dimension we are in to conflict with other dimensions, and may even cause the collapse of the multidimensional universe."

Barkley's eyes widened, and his heart seemed to be tightly grasped by an invisible hand. He thought it was just a simple task of decoding and escaping, but he didn't expect it to involve the stability of the entire universe.

"But you have to do this." Nora suddenly spoke, her tone was firm, "The Shadow Council is already chasing us, and they won't stop until they get this genetic information. If we don't act first, they will take control of this technology first, and the consequences will be even more disastrous."

Irene glanced at Nora, was silent for a few seconds, and then nodded gently. "You're right, we have no choice."

"So what should we do next?" Barkley asked anxiously.

Irene stood up and walked to a corner of the room, pulling open a curtain behind an old bookshelf, revealing a metal box embedded in the wall. She opened the box, took out a complex device, and handed it to Barkley.

"This is the ultimate decoder left by your parents." Irene said, "But the decoding process needs to be done by you yourself, because only the genetic code in your body matches it."

Barkley took the device and felt his palms cold. This is the key to solving all mysteries, but it is also a tool that triggers unknown risks.

"Are you ready?" Irene asked quietly.

Barkley took a deep breath and looked at the device in front of him firmly. "I have no choice."
