As another two months rolled by, the sun was setting itself as it brought the changing colors of the leaves.
In this time, Kūga had observed a remarkable transformation in Reifū. The timid girl who once struggled to stand on her own was now wielding Aether techniques with a level of skill that could rival experienced shinobi like Zabuza Momochi.
She wasn't capable of obliterating mountains or reshaping the landscape with her powers like her mentor, but her prowess had reached a point where she could hold her own against formidable opponents.
Kūga couldn't help but feel a swell of pride as he watched her train.
"I must be a truly exceptional teacher," he mused to himself, a smirk creeping onto his lips.
No one else could mold a student into a warrior of such caliber. After all, it was not every day that a student could learn the intricacies of Aether in just a few months.
"Are you going to stand there all day, or are we actually going to spar?" Reifū called out, her voice sharp with determination. She was already in a stance, her eyes focused and her muscles coiled like a spring, ready to strike.
"Alright, alright! I was just admiring my handiwork," he replied, stepping back and raising his hands. "Let's see what you've got, Reifū."
.
The two faced each other in a clearing surrounded by trees, their breath visible in the crisp autumn air. Reifū took a deep breath, her heart pounding with anticipation. She had trained tirelessly, and today was her chance to showcase her growth.
Kūga initiated the sparring with a simple "Aether: Push", sending a wave of invisible force toward Reifū. She sidestepped it, her reflexes sharp. "Nice try!" she shouted, countering with "Aether: Wind Blade", creating a sharp arc of wind aimed straight for him.
Kūga dodged effortlessly, the blade of wind slicing through the air just inches from his shoulder. "Impressive, but you need more control," he remarked, almost lazily. "Try focusing your Aether more tightly."
Reifū narrowed her eyes, refusing to let his comments discourage her. Drawing on her Aether, she formed a swirling vortex of energy around her fist. "Aether: Gale Strike!" she yelled, launching herself forward with a punch that sent a gust of wind racing toward him.
Kūga didn't move, instead using "Aether: Pull" to draw the blast off course, redirecting it harmlessly into the trees behind him. "You'll need to do better than that if you want to impress me," he taunted, a playful grin on his face.
"Stop messing around, Kūga!" she snapped, feeling the heat of annoyance rise in her cheeks. "I'm trying to fight you seriously!"
"Okay, okay!" he replied, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Let's see what you can really do, then."
With renewed determination, Reifū gathered her Aether, her eyes blazing with focus. "Aether: Shield!" she declared, conjuring a shimmering barrier around her as she prepared her next move. With a swift motion, she transitioned to Aether: Fireball, launching a blazing orb of fire toward him.
Kūga grinned, quickly using Aether: Push to counter the attack, dispersing the fireball into harmless embers. "Fire is great for show, but it's not as effective against someone like me," he teased, his tone playful.
Unfazed, Reifū quickly followed up with Aether: Water Torrent, summoning a surge of water from the ground. The torrent rushed toward Kūga, but he merely laughed, using Aether: Push again to send it spiraling away.
"Come on! That's your third attack in a row! Get creative!" he called, not taking the sparring seriously enough for her liking.
With a determined glare, Reifū took a deep breath, centering herself. She tapped into her Aether once more, focusing her energy into her weapon, now enhanced with her unique Aether technique. "Aether: Crescent Slash!" she shouted, her blade glowing as she swung it, sending a crescent wave of Aether slicing through the air toward him.
Kūga finally shifted, genuinely impressed. "Now that's more like it!" he exclaimed, sidestepping the attack but feeling the energy ripple past him. "You've really come into your own!"
Reifū, sensing her opening, rushed forward, initiating a flurry of strikes. Each swing was infused with her Aether, creating sparks as their weapons clashed. She employed a mix of techniques—Aether: Ground Spike to create barriers of earth beneath him, and Aether: Ice Shard to try and catch him off guard.
Kūga responded effortlessly, using Aether: Push to launch the spikes aside and Aether: Pull to disarm her of the ice shards she'd conjured.
"You're getting better, but it's still too predictable!" he called out, deflecting her strikes with ease. "You need to think outside the box!"
Frustrated but undeterred, Reifū steadied herself, allowing the Aether to flow through her. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, centering her thoughts, and then opened them with renewed clarity. "Aether: Lightning Storm!" she shouted, unleashing a flurry of crackling lightning bolts that surged toward him.
Kūga's playful demeanor shifted. This was a serious attack. He leaped into the air, channeling his Aether to manipulate the lightning. "Aether: Reflect!" he yelled, redirecting the bolts away from him and back toward the ground, causing them to explode harmlessly into the earth.
Reifū's eyes widened in surprise but quickly narrowed in determination. She launched into a series of acrobatic maneuvers, flipping and twisting through the air. "Aether: Phoenix Dive!" she yelled as she propelled herself toward him, encased in a fiery aura.
Kūga barely had time to react, but still smiled. "Alright, now you're starting to get creative!" he said, realizing he'd have to up his game. He gathered his Aether, ready to counter, but Reifū's fiery descent was more powerful than he anticipated.
They collided in a burst of energy, the impact sending a shockwave through the clearing. Reifū staggered back but regained her footing, panting with exertion, a fierce determination etched across her features.
"You're not bad, Reifū!" Kūga exclaimed, a proud smile breaking through his playful facade. "You're really pushing me!"
"I'm just getting started!" she shot back, ready for round two.
With renewed fervor, the two continued to spar, each attack and counter igniting the air with energy. Reifū unleashed everything she had learned, employing her Aether techniques with precision and creativity. She wasn't just a student anymore; she was a warrior, standing toe-to-toe with her teacher, and Kūga couldn't have been prouder.
The sparring session ended with both of them breathing heavily, their bodies glistening with sweat. Reifū wiped her brow and laughed, exhilarated. "I actually got you to dodge! I can't believe it!"
Kūga chuckled, shaking his head in mock disappointment. "You think that was dodging? I was just giving you a chance!"
As they caught their breath, Kūga couldn't help but admire how far Reifū had come in such a short time. "You've improved so much," he said, his tone sincere. "You're ready for anything now."
Reifū smiled, a mix of pride and gratitude washing over her. "Thanks to you, Kūga. I couldn't have done it without your help."
He shrugged, grinning. "I'm just getting started. There's still so much more for you to learn."
As they walked back to their hut, the sun setting behind them, Reifū felt a renewed sense of purpose and strength. She was no longer just a girl lost in a cruel world—she was a fighter, and with Kūga by her side, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
.
As Kūga and Reifū walked back to the hut, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the landscape. The air was filled with the earthy scent of fallen leaves, and the tranquil sound of the nearby river provided a soothing backdrop to their thoughts.
Kūga's mind wandered as he observed Reifū beside him. 'I guess I've wasted enough time,' he thought, his determination sharpening. 'It's time to look for other traces of Aether.' He glanced at her, noticing how much stronger she had become. She was now capable enough to defend herself if anything went awry. Though he doubted anything would happen on his watch, a flicker of pride surged within him. After all, she had managed to make him dodge during their sparring session, even with him limiting his powers to a level akin to a jounin shinobi.
.
Once they arrived at the hut, the familiar scent of wood smoke greeted them as Kūga prepared to cook. They had developed a routine: after a long day of training, they would sit together and share a meal, their bond growing stronger with each passing moment.
"Hey, Reifū," he called out, breaking the comfortable silence. "I have something important to discuss."
She looked up from her spot at the table, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "What is it about?"
As they began to cook, the scent of roasting venison filled the hut. After finishing the meal, Kūga focused his Aether to clean up any mess left behind, the remnants of their dinner disappearing into the ether. It was a simple task, but it always left Reifū in awe of his abilities.
"Now that we're settled," he said, leaning back in his chair, "I want to talk to you about something significant."
Her expression shifted from curiosity to concern. "What is it?"
Kūga took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "There are more people like us who can use Aether."
Reifū tilted her head, her brow furrowing. "Isn't that obvious? I thought people normally use it…"
He shook his head gently. "No, one thing people in this world use as an energy source is chakra. Aether is different. Out of all the people I've seen in the past twenty-one years of my life, you're the first person aside from me to possess this power."
Her eyes widened in disbelief, realization dawning on her. "How can you be so sure that there are others?"
He smiled, a warmth spreading through him at the thought. "Well, I found you, didn't I?"
.
Kūga leaned forward, his expression earnest. "I want you to come with me to search for them. You're already strong enough."
Reifū placed her hands on the table, intertwining her fingers as she considered his words. "So that's why you've been training me all this time," she murmured, almost to herself.
He nodded silently, his heart racing at the prospect of their journey together.
She looked up, vulnerability in her eyes. "I'd be lying if I said I never thought about leaving the hut for a new life somewhere," she confessed, her voice soft. "But I'm afraid to leave the memories of my mother behind."
Kūga reached across the table, placing his hands over hers in a comforting gesture. "You're not leaving anything behind, Reifū. You can always come back anytime you want."
She hesitated, her mind racing with emotions. A few seconds passed before he smiled at her reluctance and gently patted her head, an affectionate gesture that caused her to blush. "Don't worry if you don't want to go with me. I'm not here to pressure you or anything."
Just as he stood up to step out of the hut, she called out, stopping him in his tracks. "I'll go with you."
Kūga turned slowly, a smile breaking across his face.
.
A few minutes later, they sat together at the table, the warm ambiance comforting in the cool night air. Their conversation drifted easily from their plans to their dreams. Reifū started sharing another part of her memories of her mother, and Kūga spoke of his life before this village—before Aether had led him to her.
"Do you ever think about what you want to achieve out there?" Reifū asked suddenly, her voice soft, as if she feared breaking the moment.
Kūga considered her question carefully. "I want to understand Aether more deeply, to uncover its secrets. And I want to find others like us. But it's not just about the search. It's about growth—mine and yours."
Reifū nodded, but her gaze fell to her hands as she fidgeted with the edge of the table. "Do you really think we'll find them?"
Kūga reached across the table, gently lifting her chin so her eyes met his. His touch was light, but it sent a spark through both of them. "I believe we will. Aether has connected us for a reason, hasn't it?"
Her breath caught in her throat, the intensity in his gaze making her heart race. The vulnerability she felt in that moment wasn't something she had expected. But instead of pulling away, she found herself drawn closer to him, the warmth of his hand still lingering on her skin.
"I'm not alone, am I?" she whispered, almost to herself.
"No," Kūga said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "You're not."
For a moment, they sat in silence, the weight of their connection hanging between them. Then, without thinking, Kūga's hand moved from her chin to rest over her hands on the table. His fingers intertwined with hers in a gesture that was both protective and intimate.
Reifū's heart fluttered at the contact, and though she wanted to speak, words failed her. Instead, she met his gaze with a quiet vulnerability she hadn't shown before.
Under the Stars
Later that night, Kūga stepped outside to sit beneath the stars, the cool air brushing against his skin. He closed his eyes, letting the silence of the forest wash over him. Moments later, Reifū joined him, her presence warm and comforting beside him. The moon hung high above them, casting a silvery light over their small clearing.
"Have you ever felt… lost?" Reifū asked suddenly, her voice carrying a quiet vulnerability.
Kūga turned to her, surprised by the question. "There were times, yes. But I've learned that being lost can sometimes lead to finding what matters most."
She seemed to ponder his words for a moment before speaking again. "I'm just afraid of losing what little I have left."
Kūga's gaze softened. "You won't lose anything that matters. And besides… you're not alone anymore." His words were sincere, but there was something deeper in his tone—a promise.
Reifū met his eyes, her expression wavering between hope and fear. "Thank you, Kūga. For everything."
Without thinking, Kūga reached out, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear. His touch lingered for a moment longer than necessary, and when she didn't pull away, he felt the warmth of her presence wrap around him like a blanket.
They sat there together, the space between them shrinking as the stars above them glittered in the night sky. It felt as if the world had stilled, leaving only the two of them, their hearts quietly syncing to the rhythm of the universe.
.
As they prepared for bed, Reifū couldn't shake the feeling of peace that had settled over her. Tomorrow, everything would change. She glanced at Kūga, who was tidying up the small hut, his movements easy and relaxed. But beneath that calm exterior, she sensed something deeper—an unspoken connection between them that was only beginning to take shape.
"Goodnight, Kūga," she said softly, her voice laced with a warmth she hadn't felt in a long time.
Kūga paused and turned toward her, his smile gentle. "Goodnight, Reifū. Tomorrow is just the beginning."
As she crawled into her bed, Reifū allowed herself to sink into the comfort of their shared moment. The journey ahead was uncertain, but for the first time in a long while, she wasn't afraid of what the future might bring.
Kūga's words echoed in her mind as she drifted off to sleep. She wasn't alone anymore.
