Chereads / The Gifted Hands of Dr. Blackwood / Chapter 2 - The News Conference.

Chapter 2 - The News Conference.

Dr. Blackwood stood before the news conference, flanked by Rachel's mother and Dr. Patel.

"Ladies and gentlemen, today I reveal a shocking truth," Dr. Blackwood began. "NeuroSphere Incorporated, a leading biotech firm, has been exploiting patients for profit."

The room erupted into a flurry of camera clicks and shouted questions.

Dr. Blackwood held up the incriminating email. "This email proves NeuroSphere's CEO authorized Dr. Laurent to implant an experimental membrane in Rachel Lee without consent."

Rachel's mother spoke, her voice trembling. "My daughter's life was used as a guinea pig for NeuroSphere's greed."

Dr. Patel added, "We demand accountability and justice for Rachel and all victims of NeuroSphere's exploitation."

The news spread like wildfire, engulfing NeuroSphere's headquarters.

NeuroSphere's CEO, Marcus Thompson, appeared on live TV, his face pale. "We take these allegations seriously. We will investigate and cooperate fully."

After the news conference, Dr. Blackwood's phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number:

"Congratulations, Dr. Blackwood. You've just started a war."

Dr. Blackwood's expose sparked a firestorm. NeuroSphere's allies retaliated.

Dr. Blackwood received a summons from the medical board. "Your license to practice medicine is under review," the letter stated.

Dr. Laurent appeared on TV, smirking. "Dr. Blackwood's allegations are baseless. He's a disgruntled colleague."

Dr. Blackwood's phone rang nonstop. Reporters, patients, and colleagues demanded answers about his hospital privileges revoked.

"You're no longer welcome here, Dr. Blackwood," the hospital administrator said.

After this incident, Dr. Blackwood's family received threatening calls warning them to: "Drop the case, or else," a menacing voice threatened.

Dr. Blackwood's world crumbled around him.

While at home he refused to back down. "I'll fight for the truth, no matter the cost," he vowed.

Suddenly, his doorbell rang and he went see who to was but only met a mysterious package at his porch.

Inside, a cryptic message:

"Meet me at the old warehouse at midnight. Come alone."

Dr. Blackwood's eyes locked onto the mysterious message. Who could be behind it?

As he pondered, his phone rang. The medical board's chairman.

"Dr. Blackwood, we've received disturbing evidence. If true, your career is over."

Dr. Blackwood's gut twisted. "What evidence?"

"A patient's testimony. They claim you coerced them into testifying against NeuroSphere."

Dr. Blackwood's temper flared. "That's a lie!"

The chairman's tone turned cold. "We'll investigate. Meanwhile, surrender your license."

Dr. Blackwood's world teetered on the brink.

At midnight, he stood outside the old warehouse as instructed by the message, with his heart racing.

A man emerged from the shadows.

"Dr. Blackwood, you're in grave danger," the man whispered. "NeuroSphere will stop at nothing."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the alley.

"We're not alone," the man warned.

Dr. Blackwood's instincts screamed: Run.

He sprinted through the alley, the mysterious man beside him.

"Who are you?" Dr. Blackwood demanded.

"I'm someone who wants to help," the man replied. "NeuroSphere's goons are closing in."

They burst into a nearby street, dodging pedestrians.

A black SUV screeched to a halt, blocking their path.

Dr. Blackwood's heart sank.

The SUV's doors swung open, revealing heavily armed men.

"Dr. Blackwood, you're coming with us," one growled.

The mysterious man pulled out a gun.

"Run, Dr. Blackwood!"

Dr. Blackwood sprinted down a side alley as gunfire erupted.

He darted through alleys, desperate to shake off NeuroSphere's henchmen.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed his arm. "Get in," a voice whispered.

A car door swung open. Dr. Blackwood leapt in.

The driver floored it, speeding away from the chaos.

Dr. Blackwood turned to the driver.

"Who are you?"

The driver's eyes met his in the rearview mirror.

"Someone you can trust."

The driver's eyes locked onto Dr. Blackwood's in the rearview mirror.

"My name is Maya. I'm a former NeuroSphere employee."

Dr. Blackwood's mind reeled. "What do you want?"

Maya's expression turned grim. "I want to bring down NeuroSphere. They destroyed my sister's life."

Dr. Blackwood's grip on the seat tightened. "What do you know about Rachel?"

Maya hesitated. "Rachel's part of Project Elysium. NeuroSphere's experimenting with cognitive enhancement."

Dr. Blackwood's anger flared. "I'll stop them."

Maya nodded. "Together, we can."

The car screeched to a halt outside a nondescript building.

"Welcome to our safe house," Maya said.

As they entered inside the building, Dr. Blackwood met Maya's team: hackers, scientists, and whistleblowers.

Their leader, a grizzled ex-CIA operative, briefed Dr. Blackwood.

"NeuroSphere's CEO, Marcus Thompson, will stop at nothing. We need evidence to take him down."

Dr. Blackwood's determination hardened. "I'll get it."

Suddenly, Maya's phone buzzed. "NeuroSphere's tracking us," she warned.

The team sprang into action, preparing to evacuate.

Dr. Blackwood's eyes locked onto Maya.

"What's our next move?"

Maya's smile turned fierce. "We infiltrate NeuroSphere's HQ."

Dr. Blackwood and Maya's team huddled around a holographic display projecting NeuroSphere's HQ layout.

"Our target is the research lab," Maya briefed. "We need evidence of Project Elysium's wrongdoing."

Dr. Blackwood nodded in agreement. "I'll retrieve the data. You handle security."

The team donned disguises and infiltrated NeuroSphere's HQ.

Dr. Blackwood, posing as a researcher, swiped his fake ID badge.

"Clear," Maya whispered through comms.

They navigated through corridors, avoiding guards.

Inside the lab, Dr. Blackwood's eyes widened. "Rachel's files are here," he whispered.

Suddenly, alarms blared.

"Security breach!" a voice shouted.

Maya's voice came through comms. "We've been compromised. Get the data, now!"

Dr. Blackwood swiftly downloaded files onto a portable drive.

A guard stormed in.

Dr. Blackwood lunged, taking down the guard.

"Go!" Maya yelled.

The team sprinted through the corridors outside, they leapt into a waiting van.

"Pulse-pounding escape!" Maya exclaimed.

Dr. Blackwood examined the stolen files.

"What have we got?" Maya asked.

Dr. Blackwood's face darkened beholding the details of the files.

"NeuroSphere's experimenting on hundreds. Rachel's just the tip."

Maya's jaw clenched. "We take them down."

Dr. Blackwood and Maya stormed into NeuroSphere's CEO office.

Marcus Thompson sneered. "Fools. You'll never take me down."

Dr. Blackwood slammed the stolen files on the desk. "Evidence of your atrocities. Project Elysium's experiments on innocent lives."

Thompson's smile faltered. "Those people consented," he claimed.

Maya stepped forward. "My sister didn't consent. She died because of your greed."

Thompson's eyes narrowed. "You'll never prove it."

Dr. Blackwood leaned in.

"We already have. The world will know your crimes."

Thompson's face turned red. "Security!" guards burst in.

Dr. Blackwood stood firm. "We're not leaving until justice is served."

Suddenly, the door swung open.

Dr. Laurent entered, flanked by hospital administrators.

"Dr. Blackwood, your medical license is revoked," one administrator announced.

Dr. Blackwood smiled grimly. "I've got something you don't have: the truth."

Dr. Blackwood's eyes locked onto Dr. Laurent. "You're finished, Laurent. Your involvement with NeuroSphere is exposed."

Dr. Laurent sneered. "You'll never prove it."

Dr. Blackwood's anger boiled over and with a swift motion, he grabbed the files and flung them at Dr. Laurent.

"You're going down, Laurent. And NeuroSphere with you."

The files scattered, revealing incriminating evidence.

Hospital administrators gasped.

Dr. Laurent's face paled.

Marcus Thompson on seeing the evidence stormed out.

"This isn't over, Blackwood!"

Maya stepped forward. "We have enough evidence. Let's take it to the authorities."

Dr. Blackwood's determination hardened. "Not yet. We need to protect Rachel and the other victims."

Suddenly, Rachel's monitor beeped.

Her vitals plummeted.

"Rachel's crashing!" Dr. Patel shouted.

Dr. Blackwood sprinted to Rachel's side. "Code blue!" he yelled.

The hospital erupted into chaos.

Dr. Blackwood's hands moved swiftly, directing the medical team. "Epinephrine, stat!" he ordered.

Rachel's vitals continued to drop.

"Come on, Rachel. Fight!" Dr. Blackwood urged.

Maya watched anxiously. "Is she going to make it?" she asked.

Dr. Blackwood's face set in determination. "We'll do everything possible."

The medical team worked tirelessly, administering medication and CPR.

Rachel's monitor beeped erratically.

Suddenly, her heart flatlined.

"Time of death: 22:47," Dr. Patel announced.

Dr. Blackwood's eyes stung.

"No...Rachel, no!"

Maya's voice cracked. "This can't be the end."

Dr. Blackwood's gaze locked onto the monitor. "Wait...what's this?"

A faint signal flickered.

Rachel's heart restarted.

"Miracle!" Dr. Patel exclaimed.

Dr. Blackwood's hope surged. "We've got her back!"

But Rachel's revival came with a cost, her eyes opened, unfocused.

"Who...am I?" she whispered.

Dr. Blackwood's heart sank. "Rachel, do you remember me?"

Rachel's gaze drifted."I...don't know she stuttered."

Dr. Blackwood's eyes locked onto Rachel's. "Rachel, focus. Do you remember anything?"

Rachel's gaze drifted. "I...remember darkness and pain."

Dr. Blackwood's grip on her hand tightened. "We'll help you recover. I promise."

Maya stepped forward. "Rachel, I'm Maya. We met before...at NeuroSphere."

Rachel's expression remained blank. "NeuroSphere?" she repeated.

Dr. Blackwood's jaw clenched. "NeuroSphere's responsible for your condition. We'll make them pay."Rachel's eyes narrowed. "Condition? What condition?"

Dr. Blackwood hesitated. "Your artificial membrane. It's...experimental."

Rachel's face paled. "Experimental?"

Suddenly, alarms blared. "Security breach!" a voice shouted.

NeuroSphere's goons stormed the hospital. "Time to take Rachel back," one growled.

Dr. Blackwood stood firm. "Over my dead body."

Dr. Blackwood stood firm, shielding Rachel. "You'll never take her," he warned NeuroSphere's goons.

Maya leapt into action, taking down several attackers.

Hospital security rushed in, joining the battle.

Dr. Blackwood fought to protect Rachel, but NeuroSphere's forces seemed endless.

Just as all seemed lost, a surprise ally arrived.

Dr. Rodriguez, the materials scientist, charged into the fray.

"Need a hand, Dr. Blackwood?" he asked, dispatching attackers.

Together, they held off NeuroSphere's goons.

Rachel, still fragile, watched in awe. "Thank you," she whispered to Dr. Blackwood.

Dr. Blackwood smiled. "You're safe now, Rachel."

But the reprieve was short-lived.
