Back at the house, Lily dived into her grandmother's journal once again, hoping to find a way out of the destiny Rosella had told of. The later entries were jumbled, scattered about, as if she'd written in a rush. But the words formed an image: a curse, a pact with a shadow, a blood sacrifice every generation.
Lily came upon an entry written in shaking handwriting:
"I believed I would be able to stop this. I could save her. But this shadow, it's stronger and waits around for its own good as it senses how week I grow."
She did seem to defend her grandmother well against her fate, even if there was only an illusion as she managed only to temporarily delay the shadows arrival to finish Lily off for good.
She knew then that there was no escape from it; she was destined to stay in this house, tied to the curse, and the shadow would never leave her alone until it had her. She felt the weight of the centuries on her shoulders, the cries of those who came before her, sacrificed to keep the shadow at bay.
But Lily was not yet ready to give up. She had seen enough to know that there were ways to fight back. And with Mr. Armitage's help, she planned to do just that.
